Sounding like the Reform donations are on dodgy ground. Rayner confirms that when the new legislation was put forward it clearly stated that, if passed, it would apply retroactively to March 2026.

Good, I don’t want us to go the way of the US with politics up for sale to the highest bidder. A maximum cap of £1million per person/entity per tax year is more than enough.

There was anither anti mugrant protest in Portsmouth yesterday and a counter 'stand up to racism' protest at the same time. Apparently, rather than keep the 2 groups apart, the police lead them to be within close proximity of one other. If that's true, why on earth would they do this? Were they deliberately trying to incite conflict in the hope of arresting anti migrant protesters? An order from the Home Office maybe? Labour will do anything in their power to silence those who speak out against mass immigration no matter how underhand the tactic. Immigrants equal future Labour votes which is all they seem to care about. I have a dreadful feeling we're stuck with this vile, shitty government for years to come. If I could emigrate i would.

Seen it happen time and time again.

A regular occurrence at women's rights meetings, especially Let Women Speak. The police have been seen and recorded physically moving protestors (usually masked men) towards us, in numerous cases kettling us, in one case causing some of us to be trapped in a shop, and in another to be trapped in a pub.
Which would have been bearable if the staff hadn't started to refuse to serve us...

@RoseInAPot that's dreadful behaviour from the Police. What on earth is going on in this country, in government, in the police? They are supposed to protect us, to serve us and act in our best interests. It feels more and more that they are the enemy.

Why not? If the law says ‘no donations over £x after March 2026’ surely any such donations would be unlawful?

I don’t much approve of two billionaires propping up Reform, or any other party, but unless trade union money is similarly affected (I don’t know what’s proposed) that would look like a dodgy Labour stitch up.

The current legislation is for foreign donors isn’t it? They’re based in the U.K.

I’m not well up on all this, but AFAIK the present law already bans foreign donations. I thought the bill was going to cap the amount that anyone could donate, wherever they live. If the PP’s right that the new law will be retrospective when it’s on the books, I’d have thought the recent mega-donations will be in trouble.

If Labour is involved you can guarantee it'll be dodgy💩. Raynor did an interview with Rachel Johnson on Sky News about it. She was asked 'should there be a cap on individual donations, let's leave the unions out of it for the moment ' Raynor failed to answer the question. It's clear that they want a cap on foreign donations to harm reform but there sure as hell won't be any cap on union donations. Also totally unacceptable for Johnson to say 'let's leave the unions out of it's. The usual non-biased journalism from Sky News 🙄

I do his Tax Return with an elderly relative. Every year from about May he's messaging me about doing it and how worried he is. Doing it is agony: it's quite straightforward, but he is terribly concerned about not filling in the bits that aren't relevant, no matter how many times I tell him that he would have noticed if he had Foreign Property etc. For months after we've done it he messages at intervals that he thinks he got one of the figures wrong, despite the fact that we copied them off the relevant documents. He absolutely hates clicking on 'Submit'.

Meanwhile I have an elderly neighbour who needs to book blood tests via some app/website. That is completely beyond her, so I nip round and do it, but giving them her email address terrifies her, so I have all her appointments in my inbox and write them down for her.

How older people who don't have someone confident with all these government forms that they trust with all their intimate information, I can't imagine.

OTOH, if everyone else leaves, independence for England could be interesting!

Re the changes to legislation for donations, I believe that this will be back dated to March (when it was submitted) - one of the Reform donors didn’t move back to the UK until April. If that’s the case they will have to hand back the money once the bill is passed.

Does it have to be voted on or go through the house of lords?

Basically I said the man who has funded reform looks very interesting and I don't think he can be written off a as a crazy bit * man ! He wants free speech , loves maths and has funded many maths programs esp for autism / has said he wants to give his wealth away he said the three things facing us right now are ai ,climate and somerhng else and he thinks reform can deal with those.

I’d assume so. I’m not 100% sure which piece of legislation it is as I found 2 referenced, one of which is a private members bill though so I guess it’s not that one?
