Has anyone else seen the news about what’s happening in Portsmouth this evening
A boat has arrived in Hampshire and the protesters from Dover are currently in the sea blocking passage with hundreds more on the quay blocking coaches waiting.

“So the real problem is policing” ???

The real problem is not groups of men harassing girls?

Dd walked along the Edgware Rd in London on Saturday. She said never again. She was hissed at, men sort of jiggling suggestively in her path and leering. She took an uber back from her destination. But it’s a policing problem? Strewth.

I really sorry to hear this. There does seem (unproved, I know) of increased misogyny. To me, this seems linked to the rise in far right behaviour: flags, nationalistic rallies, anti immigration rhetoric and so on.

How are you not allowing them to get off the boats? What does this involve?

"If they do manage to infiltrate the country lock, them in detention centres and deport them."

So again, pretty much what happened at Portsmouth, you just want an agreement with a third country so that they can be deported quickly. Not clear why the army and navy need to be involved.

They did not take them in coaches to deport them. They took them to house them in the community, unvetted.

What you do is, you get a navy ship to approach the 'small boat' you point a gun at them (very common at have armed police at places such as ports or airports) and you tell them to turn the boat around and go back to France. You escort them part way if needed.

You protect your country from unkown invaders. The same way you would stop a stranger trying to enter your house with your children inside.

There is a reason that self defence is a mitigating factor against intruders.

Its pathetic that we have gotten to the point that any show of backbone is vilified and met with gasps of horror. Guns?! Actual enforcement of our borders?! How barabaric!!

It is necessary!

I dont understand. The police were taking the people in the boats to the Manston processing centre. How do you get taking them to housing unvetted from that statement? It seems pretty clear to me.

And the increase in men from countries where women are not respected.

You are confusing influencers and posters on MN.

Some threads are of course promoted (and it wouldn't surprise me if some of these are public health messages), but individual posters do not need to be paid to argue that vaccines save lives.

Nope. I was just saying that people do get paid to promote vaccinations.

People do get paid to post on forums on all sorts of topics. Forums can sway they way people think when they think they are talking to their peers.

Look hard enough, you’ll find people recruiting for people to do it. I was tempted to do it when I was writing and times were lean.

Are you saying you believe there’s a solid vetting process that occurs?

Where do you think they are going to be housed?

What vetting is possible when they destroy their papers and are coached not to give any information on arrival?

They were taken elsewhere to be processed. If your argument is that they shouldn't have been allowed to leave the facility and should have been sent to a third country, it is possible to do that without killing anyone.

Are you not familiar with the English Channel? It's dangerous enough making the crossing one way. Expecting them to go back (presumably ignoring tides and weather conditions) is not something you can do if you want to prevent drowning. But then you are apparently happy to gun them down in the channel. Let's hope it's not Cowes week.

You protect your country from unkown invaders.

Most illegal immigrants are people who enter the country legally and overstay their visa. Are we killing them too? I think we can deal with a few people crossing on boats without abandoning our humanity and condemning them to drowning.

Using guns against people in dinghies would be pathetic.

They take them there, do health checks and allocate them HMOs or hotels.

You really think they deport them? And vet them how? They have no documentation. Some of them even claim to be children

This is untrue, and using these poor victims to spread hate is sickening.
Can't use reason so use misinformation.

We don't have the death penalty in the UK, and even when we did it was following a trial.

Yes -the first I heard of it was when a friend who happened to be on a sailing boat near Portsmouth sent a video of the RNLI enabling the illegals. She is a lefty who has swallowed all the Guardian/BBC propaganda and so this was a real eye opener for her to see it with her own eyes. She has always supported the RNLI but has this morning said she won’t any more and is urging friends to boycott.
I could have told her this (not that she would have listened) because I used to fund raise for the RNLI but gave it up because so many people told me they won’t donate because it would be facilitating the people smugglers’ business.
I have relatives in Portsmouth - heard recently of a gang fight in a oreviouly quiet area between two gangs of Afghans…
No wonder the people of Portsmouth don’t want illegals landing there!

Edited

I don’t know…as a lifelong yachtie and water sports participant, ex crew member of the RNLI, member of a few local yacht clubs, and friend of lots of yachties and past/present crew members; I don’t know anyone who thinks the RNLI are doing anything other than the purpose they were set up for. And certainly don’t begrudge them it.

Who do you think should be making the decision as to who they save or not? One of the volunteers answering the phone? The volunteer helm? Who has to make that moral decision, and then publicly justify it? Easy to say when it is not you. Perhaps you wouldn’t have a problem making that call and would not lose any sleep about it, but the vast majority of those with any sort of conscience or moral fibre would do.

Who mentioned the death penalty?

If you are implying that not allowing random migrants in to our country is the same as execution then I just can't even continue to debate with that level of stupidity.

But if the consequence of entering the country without a passport or visa is death, then what is that if not the death penalty?

I might be stupid, but if you are killing random immigrants, I don't understand how that is not the death penalty. Please do explain.

Who is killing them?

You seem to be implying it's their own countries, if turned away, or drowning. Which would be through their own stupidity for being in a dinghy in the middle of the sea (coming from a completely safe European country so absolutely not fleeing war or danger at the point they get in the boat)

How is either of those the responsibility of the British public or blood on our hands?

iwishitwouldstartraining · 07/09/2026 14:44

EasternStandard · 07/09/2026 14:35

I'm not arguing that anyone has to be given asylum. I'm arguing that we shouldn't be letting people drown (and that those proposing this have not thought through the practicalities)

It's not even an efficient way to deal with immigration as most illegal immigrants don't arrive on small boats.

ShhhYouDontKnowMe · 07/09/2026 14:45

Valdo Calocane had Portuguese citizenship (born in Guinea-Bissau) and settled status, that’s a totally different scenario to coming on a boat.

KittyCorncrake · 07/09/2026 14:46

If you call the RNLI you don’t call the RNLI, you call 999 and they re-route the call if appropriatevto the coastguard and or RNLI.
The call handler should determine location and if outside British waters, or a migrant dinghy then refuse the call.

ShhhYouDontKnowMe · 07/09/2026 14:46

So the Navy points a gun at a boat and says turn around. The boat refuses to turn around. What do they do next? Open fire, or arrest them?
