Has anyone else seen the news about what’s happening in Portsmouth this evening
A boat has arrived in Hampshire and the protesters from Dover are currently in the sea blocking passage with hundreds more on the quay blocking coaches waiting.

Valdo Calocane had Portuguese citizenship (born in Guinea-Bissau) and settled status, that’s a totally different scenario to coming on a boat.

Right but he was still an imported killer.

So the Navy points a gun at a boat and says turn around. The boat refuses to turn around. What do they do next? Open fire, or arrest them?

Edited

Tow them. Refuse to let them pass.

Thats for the Navy to figure out, not me.

The army seem to have no problem killing people in countless other situations, so maybe that is the only way to stop it all?

TBH at this point, I honestly don't care.

What is the alternative allow this, daily, indefinitely. Forever? At the detriment to everyone living on this small island??

I care more about the potential risk to my children then the lives of any of those men who have CHOSEN to get on that boat rather than stay in the safety of France.

I'm not arguing that anyone has to be given asylum. I'm arguing that we shouldn't be letting people drown (and that those proposing this have not thought through the practicalities)

It's not even an efficient way to deal with immigration as most illegal immigrants don't arrive on small boats.

I’m not seeing that. The current system is causing deaths at sea. A better system would avoid that.

iwishitwouldstartraining · 07/09/2026 14:49

PinguMoll · 07/09/2026 14:41

Who is killing them?

You seem to be implying it's their own countries, if turned away, or drowning. Which would be through their own stupidity for being in a dinghy in the middle of the sea (coming from a completely safe European country so absolutely not fleeing war or danger at the point they get in the boat)

How is either of those the responsibility of the British public or blood on our hands?

I'm sure that RVectensian will agree that the RNLI helps many people every year who are in the middle of this sea due to their own stupidity.

Maritime law.

Comments like these are being disingenuous to spread an agenda of hate.

Using victims of violence to do so is beyond despicable.

ShhhYouDontKnowMe · 07/09/2026 14:50

Vikram Digwa, born and raised in Southampton to a British-Asian father and Indian mother. Again, not a “boat person”. The list is starting to just look like one of brown people who killed white people, regardless of how they came to be here. I don’t think that’s helpful in the discussion about small (or medium) boats.

Tow them back across the channel in an over-crowded ramshackle dinghy?

Do you have much experience on the Portsmouth to Cherbourg crossing?

I'm also failing to see the connection.

Tbf the boats to Aus were the same, so ramshackle and unsafe they caused many drownings before turnbacks.

EasternStandard · 07/09/2026 14:48

So the answer is to change the system. I think most people agree that this means faster processing and faster return/removal to a third country.

It does not mean suggesting that the Navy should be training their guns on small boats or that the RNLI should be leaving people to drown.

ShakeMeUpJudie · 07/09/2026 14:58

iwishitwouldstartraining · 07/09/2026 14:25

They did not take them in coaches to deport them. They took them to house them in the community, unvetted.

They were taken elsewhere to be processed. If your argument is that they shouldn't have been allowed to leave the facility and should have been sent to a third country, it is possible to do that without killing anyone.

What you do is, you get a navy ship to approach the 'small boat' you point a gun at them (very common at have armed police at places such as ports or airports) and you tell them to turn the boat around and go back to France.

Are you not familiar with the English Channel? It's dangerous enough making the crossing one way. Expecting them to go back (presumably ignoring tides and weather conditions) is not something you can do if you want to prevent drowning. But then you are apparently happy to gun them down in the channel. Let's hope it's not Cowes week.

You protect your country from unkown invaders.

Most illegal immigrants are people who enter the country legally and overstay their visa. Are we killing them too? I think we can deal with a few people crossing on boats without abandoning our humanity and condemning them to drowning.

It's pathetic that we have gotten to the point that any show of backbone is vilified and met with gasps of horror. Guns?! Actual enforcement of our borders?! How barabaric!!

Using guns against people in dinghies would be pathetic.

If you can’t send them back in a small boat, you get them all onto a big ship and sail them back in that. Or some other method. But, but, but… Blimey it’s 2026. We can travel into space and Mossad can blow people up using pagers. How to stop thousands of young African men arriving on our shores is not an insurmountable problem, and the arguments about the methods are, to be frank, nothing more than a distraction/head in the sand/if-you-oppose-the-boats-you-want-to-kill-people strategy at this stage.

I don’t believe, and I don’t believe anyone else honestly believes, that if the government wanted to stop the boats they couldn’t stop them next week. The only issue worth debating in my view is why they don’t want to and what can be done about that.

No I think if France do say yes to taking back boats after their GE most will be fine with what happens already. Boats are safely escorted but back to France not UK.

KittyCorncrake · 07/09/2026 15:00

Presumably thise on here who object to the people of Portsmouth trying to defend themselves from an invasion of dangerous men, also condemn Ukraine doing the same?

ShakeMeUpJudie · 07/09/2026 15:02

RVectensian · 07/09/2026 14:30

I don’t know…as a lifelong yachtie and water sports participant, ex crew member of the RNLI, member of a few local yacht clubs, and friend of lots of yachties and past/present crew members; I don’t know anyone who thinks the RNLI are doing anything other than the purpose they were set up for. And certainly don’t begrudge them it.

Who do you think should be making the decision as to who they save or not? One of the volunteers answering the phone? The volunteer helm? Who has to make that moral decision, and then publicly justify it? Easy to say when it is not you. Perhaps you wouldn’t have a problem making that call and would not lose any sleep about it, but the vast majority of those with any sort of conscience or moral fibre would do.

You imagine the RNLI volunteers are sitting by the phone waiting for a call about a boat in distress? Such naivety.

Indeed.

I mean that call came through about the boat in distress so they must have managed to get those coaches and tents set up in Portsmouth in just hiurs with no prior knowledgeat all! Impressive isn't it?

So you negotiate an agreement with France, that will inevitably involve some kind of quid pro quo. This is a practical suggestion, although it does assume politicians capable of negotiating an agreement, so nobody in Reform then. (They can't even agree with each other).

It's not me that is making the ridiculous suggestions that have no connection to reality.

(Also blowing people up with pagers hasn't prevented ongoing conflict in the middle east).

I don't think anyone thinks it's a good idea for people to be crossing the channel on an overcrowded dinghy, least of all the RNLI.

You are spot on @PinguMoll

We have the right to defend our borders. Every country has the right to defend their borders. We don’t have to be experts in navy, army or police strategy to believe that and expect our government to do it.

Yes, people do monitor shipping in the Channel.

This should be a surprise to nobody.

Of course the correct answer is none of the above as Royal Navy officers know about maritime law, and spent almost a year managing the channel until an appropriate department was formed and resourced to manage the channel

All the usual types were frothing at the mouth condemning the Navy. Now they are calling for the Navy to do what they wouldn’t do then

MaturingCheeseball · 07/09/2026 15:14

My idea is hand over Falkland Islands to Argentina (sorry, Falklanders) but with proviso that we retain a mega processing plant for all migrants/asylum seekers (staffed by Argentinians if wished). Anyone arriving on these shores is despatched forthwith to South Atlantic. Current asylum seekers will join them.

No hotels, no barracks and ABSOLUTELY no free movement around this country with no documentation. I cannot fathom how even the leftiest person can think that whilst we have to go through immigration hoops when travelling, it is fair that others stream in without any id.

Ok folks the Portsmouth to Cherbourg crossing can be a bit choppy, I’m afraid we’re going to have to abandon British society as it currently exists and accept unlimited numbers of Somalian and Eritrean young men. Sorry folks, it’s a shame and all that but what can we do?

I didn’t mention Mossad blowing people because I think it’s a good thing!!! Oh my word! I was saying we have sophisticated technology we can use (probably not up to Mossad levels though).
