Has anyone else seen the news about what’s happening in Portsmouth this evening
A boat has arrived in Hampshire and the protesters from Dover are currently in the sea blocking passage with hundreds more on the quay blocking coaches waiting.

No no no, of course the boat will disappear by magic.

That numbers are dropping seems to be over the heads of people who think a magic wand can be waved to stop the boats.

Why do people do this? It’s a complicated situation. Everyone knows that. Pretending you believe that people who disagree with you think it is simple is not a constructive approach.

"GentleSheep · Today 16:58
No I'm replying to someone else asking why the 'brave lads' aren't joining the Army. Because the Army isn't being used to deal with these boats (at least not yet). I am not advocating the Army is used, no."

That is the post I was replying to. See the first bit about "Because the Army isn't being used to deal with these boats". That is what I was seeking clarification on.

Then go further up the thread, and this

GentleSheep · Today 15:38
Maybe because the Army isn't being sent to deal with these 'small' boats.

piscofrisco · Today 15:28
It’s not a secret that our armed forces need recruits no. Why aren’t the brave lads signing up in big volumes then? They love ‘the country’ don’t they so you’d assume they’d be forming lines…

Seems rather suggestive to me that the poster thinks the army should be used. That somehow these "brave protestors" would be signing up if they were sent to deal with small boats.

Hopefully rereading

I am not advocating the Army is used, no.

has clarified that for you.

Oh dear, all the things I could tell you about UKraine, as sadly, I have experience with my own British son. Most of the front line fighting is done by foreign young men joining legions to fight in Ukraine, and mercenary groups.

People are so blinkered to the world, and modern war, it’s frightening (although, I wish I was still blinkered).

Oh and it’s money that they go for. Especially men from South America who go there to fight in their droves.

Edited

I'm so sorry your son was injured. I hope his recovery is good.

I now have Ukrainian friends here in the UK, and they've had several family members seriously injured in front-line fighting, their former colleagues and schoolfriends have been killed fighting, and memorials for those killed fighting line the roads of their town.

So I don't doubt at all that there are foreign legions on the front line. But the front line is very large and plenty of Ukrainians are fighting and being injured and killed too.

I'm sorry, it must be so incredibly difficult to see your own son going into danger.

I'm wondering whether it's relevant to what happened last night that Portsmouth is the most densely populated city in the UK? Three-quarters of the city is on Portsea Island. Traditionally most of the housing was terraced housing but the tower blocks started to take over when the bombed parts of the city were rebuilt after WWII.

Four of the older tower blocks are going to be demolished before 2030 so over 500 households will need to be rehoused. No-one I know can work out how this will be achieved.

The city is very, very overcrowded yet does not have the resources to support this. So I'm not surprised if it was local people taking part in the demonstrations last night

Boats rarely land at Portsmouth (much further from the French coast), and it's likely that the people on the boat were taken to Dover for processing.

Why do the French police stand around and watch migrants boarding these boats? Why can they not deflate the boat using a knife so the boat is then useless. There are reports that the French police are told not to intervene. Why is this? Why are we paying hundreds of millions to the French Government for them just to escort boats until they are in British waters.

The French police do intervene and do deflate boats with a knife.

It's not always safe to do so.

iwishitwouldstartraining · 07/09/2026 10:59

ShakeMeUpJudie · 07/09/2026 10:44

But the boat exists and cannot be disappeared with magic.

No, indeed. Concerted action is needed but it doesn’t look like this government wants to stop the boats.

Yes. Lawful demonstrations aren't supposed to put anyone's life at risk.

I’m not aware there have been any deaths or casualties. Have there?

More by luck than judgement. If you mess around in water you risk lives. We have already established that the leader of the protests isn't the sharpest tool in the box and everyone involved would have been at risk in an out of control situation.

Also, this might be a personal thing, but I find it abhorrent when masked men 'protest' regardless of their political motivations.

Because they would much rather they weren’t in France, obviously.

If the people causing trouble in Portsmouth last night didn't think it was simplistic, they wouldn't have been there.

That's why I think, they (and their supporters) think it's simplistic.

If they recognised that it wasn't simple, they would not be shouting at the refugees.

Why does it always have to be a punishment process ?

Introduce an overseas application process and there is no need to pay 3rd countries to take people.
Put the funding and resources into processing applications

It's not a punishment process.

It's a process to only bring in immigration which benefits our country.

We should absolutely not add an overseas application process. Are you insane?

The Asylum system was set up in a different world: following WW2, when Europe was struggling and rebuilding. It was never intended to bring the entire 3rd world into Europe.

It's completely obvious that there are far too many people living in shitty countries who would love a new life in the UK. It would destroy our country to try to accommodate them.

Where the legions are there with foreign men, the Ukrainian men are held back. The legions supply the storm troopers and the men for the suicide missions in the forests.

There is a whole other level of corruption on that front.

Does anyone think we can accommodate everyone who would want to be here? Maybe some posters.

I agree the system worked at that time but it’s being used by vast profiting networks and domestically not working anymore, not just here but in the EU and west generally.

PerkingFaintly · 07/09/2026 11:04

I'm sorry, that sounds horrible.

People just don’t realise how it is.

I was in Lviv for two months with my son. I have seen and I know a lot. I spent the first two weeks in Kharkiv which was as close to the front line as I was comfortable going (and even there, life just carries on).

There is so much more I could say but a) I don’t want to derail the thread and b) people don’t want to hear the truth about anything. Especially when it concerns any sort of refugee.

I think that if you are putting on a mask and a balaclava, you probably aren't thinking much and are just having a fun night out protesting. The cause doesn't matter. You just align with the tribe, whether they are football hooligans, Antifa or Tommy Robinson.

The criteria are insane.

Men are currently being granted asylum by pretending to be gay.

The asylum system has been utterly corrupted, and must now be completely stopped.

A whistle-blower who works on asylum claims has said that only 1% of asylum claims are legitimate. They are being coached to get through the interviews.

And yet they almost all stay in the UK once they get here.

Fascinating how a woman in a burqa is a threat but a man in a balaclava on public transport isn’t 🤔

Exactly! I thought they wanted to ban face coverings?

Almostreadyforautumnnow · 07/09/2026 11:36

So odd, isn't even covered on morning news or This morning etc

Because they didn't want to obey the law?

This does bother me, and I do find it threatening, again regardless of where they fall on the political /tribal spectrum
