Has anyone else seen the news about what’s happening in Portsmouth this evening
A boat has arrived in Hampshire and the protesters from Dover are currently in the sea blocking passage with hundreds more on the quay blocking coaches waiting.

I think you might find that in fact in terms of our quality of life we are, in relative terms to lots of other places, not fucked at all.

The more useful comparison is to quality of life in our own country, which is clearly deteriorating. Presumably you would not be bothered if it continues to do so as long as we have better quality of life than “lots of other places “.

Why would anyone in their right minds feel inclined to go and fight in Ukraine? In terms of motivation fighting in defense of the homeland is obviously a more powerful incentive than fighting someone else's war at the other side of Europe, I don't know what you are trying to say with this. Young men should join the army and leave these shores, while lots of immigrants can come in?

No, young men should defend THIS country.

Do you honestly believe the only way to discourage and stop the boats is to leave people to drown? You can’t see that the way people are dealt with once they arrive is encouraging the arrival of thousands of young men? You don’t think what happens in France is relevant? You don’t believe there are any ways to discourage these crossings other than leaving people to drown?

Re read, it's not me saying that.
I'm quoting back at the people who think the RNLI should not be assisting.

What do they think the result of people in difficulties without help will be if not drowning?

I think there are many better ways, and can see that efforts are working.

No I'm not a fuckwit that would leave people to drown.

Hope that answers your question.

We really need an offshore processing space. We need to remove the carrots. And the more European countries take a hard line, the more will be making for Britain.

This is what I think will happen. There’s still a fair number who think those object are wrong but as other EU countries get more hardline we’ll follow due to higher numbers.

And countries like Denmark may have more hardline policies, but they don't have a policy of leaving people to drown either.

Are you advocating that the Army is used against civilians ?

No I'm replying to someone else asking why the 'brave lads' aren't joining the Army. Because the Army isn't being used to deal with these boats (at least not yet). I am not advocating the Army is used, no.

RedTagAlan · 07/09/2026 09:59

GentleSheep · 07/09/2026 09:54

No, young men should defend THIS country.

And women.

And defend they will if called upon. That is why we have armed forces. But at the moment the UK is not at war with anyone.

ShakeMeUpJudie · 07/09/2026 09:59

RedTagAlan · 07/09/2026 09:39

Quote " If you join an organisation which is helping people arrive on boats, you will helping people arrive on boats, not helping stop them."

SOLAS ( International law), Ch V reg 33.

" The master of a ship at sea which is in a position to be able to provide assistance, on receiving information from any source that persons are in distress at sea, is bound to proceed with all speed to their assistance, if possible informing them or the search and rescue service that the ship is doing so. This obligation to provide assistance applies regardless of the nationality or status of such persons or the circumstances in which they are found. If the ship receiving the distress alert is unable or, in the special circumstances of the case, considers it unreasonable or unnecessary to proceed to their assistance, the master must enter in the log-book the reason for failing to proceed to the assistance of the persons in distress, taking into account the recommendation of the Organization to inform the appropriate search and rescue service accordingly."

It is actually illegal under international law not to render assistance if in a position to help. Are you suggesting that UK orgs that sign on to uphold the law just ignore it ?

There is also article 98 of UNCLOS that applies to states. I wont quote it again, I already posted it up thread.

I’m not sure that you’ve followed the logic of that particular discussion. I was replying to someone who was asking why the protestors don’t join the army or British border control if they want to stop the boats. I was explaining why.

Oh dear, all the things I could tell you about UKraine, as sadly, I have experience with my own British son. Most of the front line fighting is done by foreign young men joining legions to fight in Ukraine, and mercenary groups.

People are so blinkered to the world, and modern war, it’s frightening (although, I wish I was still blinkered).

Oh and it’s money that they go for. Especially men from South America who go there to fight in their droves.

Edited

I hope your son is out of it and safe.

It deteriorating due to global economic decline, mis management of finances, the ramifications of Brexit, Wars started by foreign leaders (with our direct or indirect historical causation), the aftermath of a pandemic, and the division of our society which is being whipped by the media and by far right and left politicians who have something to gain for themselves from it. Migration, (illegal or legal) is way down the list of reasons our quality of life is declining in my opinion.

Im pretty sure we will never agree.

Are you saying that is the UK army was to be used to machine gun the boats, or somehow drive them back, then these protestors would sign up to take the Kings shilling ?

True. And fewer people drown off the coast of Australia trying to arrive by boat.

ShakeMeUpJudie · 07/09/2026 10:01

piscofrisco · 07/09/2026 09:39

That isn’t my premise at all.
There are posters on this thread that have implied that civil unrest is a valid and needed response against the boars because the government is actively encouraging them. That these same protesters would not join the army or the uk border force because they actively encourage boats or that they might do if it they couldt jsut act to close our borders and not involve ourselves in other countries wars etc etc. The implication being that we should isolate ourselves and look after our selves and no one else. In my view that ignores that fact that actually we are unable to survive independently of other nations and that it’s a good think to be part of a global society. And that includes co operation on asylum seekers.

You’ve said it’s not your premise and then repeated the same claim.

tamade · 07/09/2026 09:59

I hope your son is out of it and safe.

For now. But he was badly injured. But who knows if he will decide to go back. Many do.

I have more knowledge on the war in Ukraine through him, and from going there myself to get him when he was injured than I care to have. The corruption is incredible. It winds me up when people talk about it on here and they have no fucking clue.

See also the Ukrainian refugees. It’s something I can’t even speak about as it makes me so angry having been to Ukraine, where for the most part, the vast country is very safe and it’s been life as usual.

Gtfto2024 · 07/09/2026 08:53

Where were your protests about our military being the same leaflet telling them not to rape women?

That is the most pathetic response I would have ever expected

ShakeMeUpJudie · 07/09/2026 10:05

piscofrisco · 07/09/2026 09:42

They aren’t. But ok.

You think the boat arrivals are not being freely housed around the country? What do you believe is happening to them? And who are these men being housed at Piddington etc, and are they being held against their will once housed?

Tomikka · 07/09/2026 10:05

Rwanda

The one where we paid Rwanda to set up an asylum centre, paid volunteers to set them up for their new life, paid Rwanda to take them, gave Rwanda the veto on who they would and would not accept and included a refugee exchange under which they could sent refugees from Rwanda ?

They’re clutching at straws and becoming quite desperate. Just on this thread alone every accusation has been levelled at at least one person.

Taxes are going up, welfare bill is going up, there is a shortage of affordable housing, any discussion on illegal migration is met with draconian silencing of individuals because they’re allowed to malign everyone as far right or worse.

Making people scared to speak is pushing them to parties or even fringe groups that allow dialogue to occur without fear of being called a label etc.

The silence was defeaning when people were told they must shut up about children being raped for the sake of diversity.

Now black and Asian people are becoming brave enough to challenge the harmfulness of this uncontrolled immigration and we are speaking up, some people like Kemi and Zia are in positions where they could possibly change government policy.

For their part in trying to voice almost every sane persons stance on illegal immgration, they’re called such vile and awful slurs but the left do not condemn this, they laugh, retweet and actively support such hateful and violent rhetoric. Second and third generations are no longer a political pet for a certain faction. We see through the rather nefarious and dangerous politics and agenda.

RedTagAlan · 07/09/2026 09:29

Absolutely- the Spanish did. To protect their borders. We should do the same.

Stop being so logical.

The authorities had plenty of warning that this boat was coming. And being an unusual place to land, the infrastructure isn't already in Portsmouth to to hold these people as they come off the boat, so coaches and border staff had to be sent there promptly.

It's quite ridiculous to be ascribing some dark plan to this. The government doesn't want them here. They're hardly going to plan to bring them here.

Exactly!! If you’re not going to be nudge, nudge wink, wink conspiracy theorist, then don’t come on here!! You silly, sensible person you!

I don’t accept your premise that the opposite of accepting the current situation is leaving people to drown. I don’t think massively oversimplifying a complicated and multifaceted situation in order to be able to accuse your opponents of wanting to leave people to drown is a constructive or intelligent approach to this discussion.

AustenitesUnite · 07/09/2026 10:11

I'm wondering whether it's relevant to what happened last night that Portsmouth is the most densely populated city in the UK? Three-quarters of the city is on Portsea Island. Traditionally most of the housing was terraced housing but the tower blocks started to take over when the bombed parts of the city were rebuilt after WWII.

Four of the older tower blocks are going to be demolished before 2030 so over 500 households will need to be rehoused. No-one I know can work out how this will be achieved.

The city is very, very overcrowded yet does not have the resources to support this. So I'm not surprised if it was local people taking part in the demonstrations last night

Why do people keep doing this on this thread? Taking posts out of context to score points. It’s so annoying.
