Has anyone else seen the news about what’s happening in Portsmouth this evening
A boat has arrived in Hampshire and the protesters from Dover are currently in the sea blocking passage with hundreds more on the quay blocking coaches waiting.

yes.
Do you not understand that if we close our borders, refuse to co operate or help with other nations, become isolationist, engage in civil unrest and refuse any immigration at all, that our economy and society will collapse and we will be fucked?

If you are replying to a particular post, you should quote them or include the poster’s name otherwise we don’t know who you are replying to.

Maybe because the Army isn't being sent to deal with these 'small' boats.

Are you advocating that the Army is used against civilians ?

You have actually seen genuine RNLI crew throwing water at protesters? I’ll believe this when I see an unedited clip of this myself

I saw a clip and they were both splashing each other. I think the RNLI were trying to get them to move back. Not sure who splashed first. One comment said it was like a Monty python sketch.

Edit - ok I’ve rewatched the clip and the protestor splashes first. Clearly the RNLI wasn’t going to stand for it.

I don’t accept your premise that all these things follow automatically from stopping the boats.

I feel our society is currently heading towards a state of collapse, and our “economy” may be fine but not to the benefit of many of our citizens.

I think you might find that in fact in terms of our quality of life we are, in relative terms to lots of other places, not fucked at all.

How many thousands of men coming here is acceptable? Do you think the types of men - illiterate, low-skilled - are going to benefit the country economically? The only “benefit” they bring is lining the pockets of interpreters/accommodation providers and of course lawyers.

EasternStandard · 07/09/2026 09:31

I’ve no complaint against them particularly. But they have societal problems as do most nations. As do we. I just don’t think we will agree on what ours are, or on how they should be managed.

You’re not going to get anywhere without some issues, but those three countries have found bipartisan support for hardline immigration measures.

And what you claim in your earlier post would happen, hasn’t.

Brexit imo was just an immigration issue for most; Europe was demanding we had to sign up to Schengen. At the same time Turkey was being considered for membership and the fear was millions of Turks (and those passing through from other countries) would be making their way here.

But as pps have said, the people were ignored. Even when other European countries are acting there’s a defeatist “nothing can be done” message.

Europe was demanding we had to sign up to Schengen

We had an opt out in place. Links to support this claim?

And re Turkey, all EU members have a veto on new accessions, they weren’t even close to meeting the requirements to be able to join.

Tell me you know nothing about how the EU actually works without telling you me you know nothing about how the EU actually works. You bought the scaremongering and didn’t check the facts.

Apart from the ones that are turned back or that don’t get to launch at all due to the combined work of our government and the French?

If they can’t be stopped safely then they are escorted safely. Again what would you like to happen? Why will none of you just say what you seem to imply-that you would be happy or at least indifferent if the people on the boats were left to drown?

People are drowning at the moment. Presumably, to use your tactic, you are happy or at least indifferent to that?

fashionqueen0123 · 07/09/2026 09:38

Just watched the video where the organiser guy keeps announcing his name to the police and then throws up. Then tells his mate in the sea he’ll need a blanket as they’re gonna be there for a while.
What the hell. Embarrassing. Apparently he has a prison record for attempting kidnap. How nice.

ThisMauveExpert · 07/09/2026 00:17

As someone else stated upthread the number should be zero.

We don't want illegal migrants here

Zero can't happen overnight. The numbers are going down significantly, and now France and the UK are bringing in more changes and more border personnel as we type.

It seems bizarre that protests are ramping up exactly when we're seeing results from both governments.

RedTagAlan · 07/09/2026 09:39

ShakeMeUpJudie · 07/09/2026 09:02

The government and government bodies are not trying to stop the boats. They are waiting for them with coaches and tents. They are helping and encouraging them.

If you join an organisation which is helping people arrive on boats, you will helping people arrive on boats, not helping stop them.

Quote " If you join an organisation which is helping people arrive on boats, you will helping people arrive on boats, not helping stop them."

SOLAS ( International law), Ch V reg 33.

" The master of a ship at sea which is in a position to be able to provide assistance, on receiving information from any source that persons are in distress at sea, is bound to proceed with all speed to their assistance, if possible informing them or the search and rescue service that the ship is doing so. This obligation to provide assistance applies regardless of the nationality or status of such persons or the circumstances in which they are found. If the ship receiving the distress alert is unable or, in the special circumstances of the case, considers it unreasonable or unnecessary to proceed to their assistance, the master must enter in the log-book the reason for failing to proceed to the assistance of the persons in distress, taking into account the recommendation of the Organization to inform the appropriate search and rescue service accordingly."

It is actually illegal under international law not to render assistance if in a position to help. Are you suggesting that UK orgs that sign on to uphold the law just ignore it ?

There is also article 98 of UNCLOS that applies to states. I wont quote it again, I already posted it up thread.

That isn’t my premise at all.
There are posters on this thread that have implied that civil unrest is a valid and needed response against the boars because the government is actively encouraging them. That these same protesters would not join the army or the uk border force because they actively encourage boats or that they might do if it they couldt jsut act to close our borders and not involve ourselves in other countries wars etc etc. The implication being that we should isolate ourselves and look after our selves and no one else. In my view that ignores that fact that actually we are unable to survive independently of other nations and that it’s a good think to be part of a global society. And that includes co operation on asylum seekers.

“Daniel Thomas, 37, was jailed for two years in 2016 after bursting into a man’s house with two others, armed with knives, and shouting: “You’re coming with us.”

They wrongly alleged that the man had stolen £10,000 of drugs from them in what the judge called an “extraordinarily frightening incident” matched only by its “stupidity”.

The Times on the man leading the activity in Portsmouth.

I do completely agree that stupid men are a problem.

ShakeMeUpJudie · 07/09/2026 09:40

piscofrisco · 07/09/2026 09:20

Ok cool. So the coaches and border official in Portsmouth detained them and took them to somewhere they can be tracked, held and processed within our existing system. So that should please you shouldn’t it?

Do you not understand the difference between being in the UK and in a third country?

And they are not detained in this country. They are being freely housed around the country. You know this.

Try harder. You know that if the boats were just left without assistance more people would die.

Why would anyone in their right minds feel inclined to go and fight in Ukraine? In terms of motivation fighting in defense of the homeland is obviously a more powerful incentive than fighting someone else's war at the other side of Europe, I don't know what you are trying to say with this. Young men should join the army and leave these shores, while lots of immigrants can come in?

Oh dear, all the things I could tell you about UKraine, as sadly, I have experience with my own British son. Most of the front line fighting is done by foreign young men joining legions to fight in Ukraine, and mercenary groups.

People are so blinkered to the world, and modern war, it’s frightening (although, I wish I was still blinkered).

Oh and it’s money that they go for. Especially men from South America who go there to fight in their droves.

There are HMOs in my area and one on my street. Other than adding to the parking problem, no other issues. The issues in my area are from the indigenous population, not Muslims or immigrants. The locals at times try to whip up racial hatred which isn't specific to newly arrived people, but to anyone with brown skin.

Reform supporters are far more likely to have been charged with violent offences, ironically often against women (when one of their slogans is 'protect our women') than from any other political party hence the assumption of wife beating, although I would probably have been better to call it common assault, because that is technically more accurate.

Well, come and visit me then. You would see a different picture. Dm me, we’ll arrange it and you can see for yourself.

If people genuinely voted for Brexit because they didn't understand veto powers, then that is very sad.

And yet you don't think the RNLI should help people on boats that are in difficulties. You have said "
If you join an organisation which is helping people arrive on boats, you will helping people arrive on boats, not helping stop them."

Please explain what other conclusion there is from this.

Do you honestly believe the only way to discourage and stop the boats is to leave people to drown? You can’t see that the way people are dealt with once they arrive is encouraging the arrival of thousands of young men? You don’t think what happens in France is relevant? You don’t believe there are any ways to discourage these crossings other than leaving people to drown?

I think that by making some of the choices on your lists we would avoid some of the problems you mention. For example most of the civil unrest is due to issues, true or perceived, stemming from immigration.

The RNLI aren't responsible for government policy. They don't judge which people to save.

We really need an offshore processing space. We need to remove the carrots. And the more European countries take a hard line, the more will be making for Britain.
