I said further up the thread that I had read an article about the reasons why the protestors were dressed in black with faces covered.

A month or so ago a migrant was stabbed to death on a beach in France and the perpetrators were suspected of then getting on a small boat crossing. Does that not bother you? Or when you see news coverage of people getting on these boats and the men are not letting women on and pushing them back in to the water, the same with young children who aren't given a life jacket but all the men have one. Does that not bother you?

The economy stalled because interest rates went up as was inevitable and we were running a debt/property bubble for an economy, businesses that were unviable and borrowing to stay afloat went bust, that is how capitalism is supposed to work, not everyone getting bailed out in case their business being unviable makes them feel sad.
As probably more than half of Europe is EU sceptic I doubt they spend much time thinking about how "diminished" we are, they just want their freedom too! Britain"s "place" in the world has been diminishing for decades (but we are still the 5th/6th biggest economy in the world, strange that?) Do you think the British Empire was down to closer ties with a European political project?

The children are used as props to be thrown into the sea supposedly so that the authorities are distracted by having to rescue them, the way forward is using third party countries to process applications, immediate detention and deportation on arrival but a paid for flight back if the application is successful would be fair, or a system of work for housing and food, land work would be appropriate, if you have fled a war zone you would be happy to work 6-8 hours a day in a field to produce food for the fantastic country you want to make your home in exchange for a warm safe bed and food?

On what bothers me I find it too much to accept that we should say ah ok re what happened to the elderly man, or Rhiannon Whyte, or in Belfast. That’s all not ok, the gov is failing on it.

No, but you seemed to be trying to say that I said the SAS should be beating up migrants! If you are a driver for a criminal organisation you are not a "random person". My point was that they can organise massive military operations in Iraq etc. but they can"t stop a handful of gangsters in Europe running these boats? Using a higher level of state power even just to organise operations against people smugglers sends a stronger message than letting the local coppers in Europe (many probably on the take anyway) do it.

Yes, it was a one off comment based on Thatcher"s use of the SAS to break a prison siege at Peterhead, the documentary is on YouTube and the ex-SAS members who entered the prison seem very happy that some prisoners "got what was coming to them", the court cases for brutality went on for years afterwards but all were eventually thrown out of court. My point is that these were hard core category A prisoners doing life with nothing to lose, the average person who gets involved in driving for a smuggling gang is not in that category probably, the threat of serious consequence for driving people into "modern slavery" might focus minds?

Of course protests shouldn't be illegal. I'm not sure this one was though. I think there was a loophole in the law that they got around. There was no violence, no criminal activity and they even took their rubbish home afterwards.

Should they have been wearing masks? Probably not, I can see why people would find that intimidating but then I hate any kind of face covering. I don't like seeing women wear burkas where I can only see their eyes. I find that unsettling. Now that I'm older I find it easier to speak to someone if I can see their face.
