Couples who Hold Hands

I’m interested in other people’s views on couples who walk around holding hands.

Do you and your partner do this?

We do, but I’ve noticed that I don’t really see others doing it and wondered if we’re perceived as a bit weird.

Public displays of affection aren't my thing. I really don't care if others hold hands in public though, as long as they aren't taking up all the space anyway.

Late DH and I always held hands. He died in his early 50’s nearly 3 years ago. Whenever I pass an older couple holding hands I miss him so much, our hands always reached for each others, I never felt weird about it.

Wookyhole · 05/09/2026 08:07

We always used to, but not so much now in late 40s/ early 50s….
We are going to a country fair today, might have to start again!
I also like going to sleep at night holding his hand, that’s nice.

beaglescurleduplikebagels · 05/09/2026 08:07

No, it personally would drive me insane to have someone touching me all the time like that - get OFF 😂

Beshtiismybestie · 05/09/2026 08:09

I like it but after about a minute I have to let go as my husband's hand is hot and even though he tries not to, his hand is really strong and grips mine!

It's a me problem, poor husband would like to do it far more!

hardshoulderr · 05/09/2026 08:10

Never mind holding hands, we used to know a couple (they both had affairs with each other) who ran holding hands

DriveVerySlowlyPastNumber23IWantThemToSeeMyHat · 05/09/2026 08:10

Rarely but only because we walk at different paces 😂

OneZanyCat · 05/09/2026 08:11

We hold hands almost all the time when out, we both like to do that and been together donkeys years.

So sorry about the loss of your lovely DH @TheOlderIGetTheStayerIHome

I like to see old people holding hands, it’s sweet.
I must admit that those who determinedly hold hands and don’t give way on the pavement make me mad. Its not up to me to walk in the road or bury myself into a hedge just so you can hold hands.

TheresDirtInTheYurt · 05/09/2026 08:13

This thread is (mostly Hmm) lovely 🥰 DH doesn't like to do any public displays of affection - even if we both end up on the drive leaving the house at the same time and do a quick goodbye hug and peck where the neighbours might see, he's so tense and awkward. He's affectionate in private, but I'd love to wander round holding hands like some of you do.
My dad used to indulge me linking arms with him and skipping (!) together, well into my teens, and it's one of my favourite things to remember about him because it reflected how he just accepted me exactly as I was. That's what I assume about couples I see holding hands or linking arms - that they're happy and comfortable and accepting of one another.

Whenever we can, although not when it's roasting. I'm mid 50s, DH is early 60s. We've been together for over 30 years and married for 27.

I love holding hands with him.

When I see this I assume they haven’t been together all that long 😂 I hold hands with my newish partner, it’s nice.

Seems, from this thread, that you’re wrong!

DH and I will still hold hands - off and on - if we’re walking somewhere together.
Been together 37 years.

summater · 05/09/2026 08:24

Annoying if I want to get past

emmetgirl · 05/09/2026 08:25

Most of the time yes.

Namechangerage · 05/09/2026 08:26

Sometimes but we don’t get the chance much these days with kids etc.

My only gripe is couples who won’t let go when the pavement narrows and they block people from getting by.

dreamingofgoodhair · 05/09/2026 08:27

No I don’t like it , he does , it just makes me feel uncomfortable.
I’m not very physically demonstrative.

Imdunfer · 05/09/2026 08:28

Together 50 years, hold hands watching TV and at the cinema, not so much when walking ing, we need our hands free to balance these days!

TubeScreamer · 05/09/2026 08:31

That would drive me nuts if I was trying to walk

ScaredButUnavoidable · 05/09/2026 08:32

My husband has got massive hands so hand-holding is quite uncomfortable for me 😂

As a result we tend to walk with our arms around each other instead.

Onacuctustree · 05/09/2026 08:34

We do.
Mainly so I don't lose him as he marches when out and about.
But we hold hands when we are just sat together too.
Been together 10 years.
It's a way of communicating too.

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 05/09/2026 06:40

Always hold hands. Even when we are sat next to each other we hold hands. And I still reach for his bum, and no not newly together, been together for over 16 years he’s just my favourite person.

This!

Empress13 · 05/09/2026 08:36

We tend to link arms as opposed to holding hands

Rituelec · 05/09/2026 08:37

Fibrous · 05/09/2026 07:45

No, it would really annoy me. Also there’s a foot height difference so it would feel odd, and we have a different camber in our walks. We live in a hilly area and the paths are rough so you need your hands for balance, anyway.

Husband is 6'5 and I am 5'2. Never noticed it being an issue. Obviously I walk slower so we don't hold hands if we are on a mission but if no rush we do.

DanaScullysLegoHair · 05/09/2026 08:45

My Fiancee and I would love to hold hands when mooching around but we're lesbians and it seems to attract unwanted attention. I'd directly attribute this to the rise of right-wing popularity. More people (men) seem to think it is their 'right' to stare and comment.

I live in a big city and it never really used to be an issue. Now it feels provocative to simply hold the hand of the person I love, so sadly, we just don't do it anymore.
