What is the worst thing that has spilt from your cupboards?

any mess is a bad mess but what is the worst thing from your kitchen cupboards that has spilt? i was reaching for something the other day and an opened packet of chia seeds came falling out. now, if you know chia seeds, they are very small and do literally go everywhere! following them a packet of pumpkin seeds decided to join in and spread itself everywhere!

Gravy browning! The glass bottle fell from the top shelf of a wall cupboard and exploded on hitting the floor. Had to redecorate.

Red lentils. Despite being double bagged 😂😂. Awkward grab from top shelf, they were everywhere including the toaster & hob!!

Handle broke off a milk jug as I lifted it out of the fridge and it emptied itself inside the fridge. Hadn't planned on doing a full fridge clean that day!
A relative came home with her 6 month old baby one day and discovered a whole wall cupboard had fallen off and there was food and broken glass everywhere. She had to put the baby in the washing basket while she cleared the glass up!

One thing that's clear from reading these posts is that food companies need to make the bags that lentils are packed in much stronger!

Most recently a bag of bulgar wheat. The worst though was probably when a jar of herbs fell out of the cupboard and landed perfectly into a jug of red wine I had just measured out for the recipe. The splash of red wine was impressive - we had to repaint the ceiling!

We’ve had ‘potato gate’ as my son called it, he’s never let me forget it as he dealt with the clean up

I once tipped a whole un-set jelly over me as I was transferring it to the fridge to set. I still feel sticky just thinking about it, and of course what didn’t spill on me went on the kitchen floor and I was mopping up jelly syrup for days.

Almost a full litre of sunflower oil, I dropped it when taking it out of the cupboard and it landed upside down on my slate floor. The lid came off and it gushed out. After mopping up as much as I could with kitchen roll, I had to squirt an entire bottle of washing up liquid over the floor before wiping it, and then mop several times with more washing up liquid and water. I do occasionally oil the slate, though not with that much oil, and it did make it look lovely once cleaned but took so long to get rid of the excess.
Also honey in a squeezy bottle, ds put it upside down on the top shelf of the pull out larder, and it dripped over everything.
And there was the time we could smell something in the kitchen and couldn’t work out where it was coming from. It smelled like vomit 🤢 . We eventually tracked it down to the evaporation tray on the back of the fridge freezer, someone (dh) had lay a partially used 4 pint carton of milk down on the shelf and it had leaked and gone into the defrosting channel at the back. We had to syringe disinfectant and water through the pipe to get rid of it

Treacle - never bought it again.

Whole can of diet coke over the cream carpet in the living room of our rental the morning we were moving out. Spot washer in storage already. I was reduced to patting the huge stain ineffectually with a damp tea towel. Swearing was off the scale.

Golden syrup. It was my landlady's and fell out of a cupboard in the living room (god knows why it was in there ) all over the carpet. It was like tar !

All these examples are making me feel absolutely fortunate. Chia seeds, sticky syrup and honey, I feel your pain. I put my pack of red lentils in an extra plastic bag, I don't know if it helps, I have been lucky that my packs haven't split -yet!

A tin of dried mustard powder.

It fell off the shelf in the cupboard and it opened on hitting the worktop edge. Cue a bright yellow dust cloud with me having breathing and eyes watering.

Under the cupboard where the dried mustard powder is located on the worktop - is my herbs and spices rack plus a tray of things such as pepper mill, vinegar bottle etc. The cupboard contains stock cubes, my current pots of dried pasta and pack sauce mixes etc.

It took ages to clean the area up.

I once pulled an entire cupboard shelf down containing all sorts of sticky and small substances in glass jars (filled from the refill shop)... peanut butter, honey, various nuts and seeds, sugar, flour, sprinkles, really expensive vanilla extract....along with all the smashed glass.
It all came tumbling out into a big mess of glass and stickiness and bits everywhere. It was impossible to clean and I got so many cuts on my hands. Worst day ever. Did I mention I also had a 3yo and a crawling baby to manage at the time??? shudders

I know the smell of rotten potatoes from my days working for a supermarket. Another rotten smell I cannot get rid off in my mind, is surprisingly, pumpkins. They don't smell normally.

In October, we got pumpkins delivered in the potato troughs on wheels. My colleagues and I transferred them from one trough to another to circulate them. If there was a bashed section of a pumpkin, we reduced it cheap to colleagues - you can eat them, If left for another day or two, the smell from the bashed section was unreal. Sometimes we got deliveries with squashed pumpkins at the bottom.

The worst thing I have heard colleague spill was a pallet of wine with about 450-500 bottles of wine going everywhere. They were the cheap n nasty wines like Three Mills

Not food but last week my cat was having a rather aggressive cover up of his daily poo, and he dug so deep that he managed to tip the litter box upside down with around £5 worth of litter, a massive wee and a huge steaming 💩

Gravy granules. They look like mouse poo and I keep finding more even though I’ve cleaned up 😱

Milk. It got everywhere and stank for weeks.

I think the honey wins, but mine was pickled beetroot that smashed

Cadbury Instant Hot Chocolate fell out of the cupboard. I’d not secured the lid when I put it back before so…..POOF, it went everywhere including inside the toaster that was under the cupboard. I still have a pic of the crime scene and it was over 10 years ago now 😆

Not myself but a friend of DM had a new kitchen because of it.

About 25 years ago, her DP tried to open an old bottle of full sugar Ribena - which was about 2 years out of date. He struggled and used a towel to grip. Then the bottle exploded sending Ribena everywhere. White kitchen, could not get the stains out.
