any mess is a bad mess but what is the worst thing from your kitchen cupboards that has spilt? i was reaching for something the other day and an opened packet of chia seeds came falling out. now, if you know chia seeds, they are very small and do literally go everywhere! following them a packet of pumpkin seeds decided to join in and spread itself everywhere!

Dh smashed a whole huge jar of kimchi. It was.....ripe

MellowSubmarine · 02/09/2026 13:32

Marmite. It stuck to everything!

maddiemookins16mum · 02/09/2026 13:35

Lentils, was still finding them weeks later. But the worst was a bottle of garlic/herb infused olive oil we brought home from Greece, for weeks our kitchen smelled of a Gyros shop in Crete.

Gluten free flour. I tried to wipe it up with a damp cloth, big mistake it turned into a gloopy mess. I had to wash and rinse anout ten times before it came clean.

Molasses which leaked all over the bottom of everything else in the cupboard. As it was the baking cupboard most things were in paper bags, so when I was clearing the molasses covered shelf up I picked up the bag of flour. It was stuck down with the molasses, so I pulled a bit harder... The whole top of the bag came away, leaving the base of the bag stuck to the shelf and about 1kg of flour exploded over the whole kitchen. When you hoover up flour, it clogs your hoover filter in about 5 seconds, but when you mop or use a cloth it turns into glue...

Most annoying one was custard powder. Went miles because it's so light, and turns to concrete if it gets even slightly wet so you can't wipe it.

Most expensive one was when I knocked a jar of marmite out of a high cupboard. It hit the corner of the microwave beneath and the entire glass front of the microwave cracked into hundreds of tiny cracks (marmite jar was fine!)

Cadbury's Drinking Chocolate Powder - it was giant tub too! Never pick something up by the lid folks!

whippersnapper55 · 02/09/2026 14:00

Fish sauce is my worst, the smell was horrendous! The other day I picked up a bag of couscous and it went everywhere 🤦‍♀️ but at least it's easy to sweep up!

Cotopaxi · 02/09/2026 14:06

Brace yourselves - maggots. One of the tins of cat food in the cupboard had a split in the side, flies had found it and laid eggs. When the maggots hatched they came crawling out all over the place. 😱

LarryForPrimeMinister · 02/09/2026 14:08

Dropped a Nutella jar when trying to get off the top shelf. That wasn't fun to clean up.

DesperatelyConfused6 · 02/09/2026 14:13

I thought my dishwasher emptying itself into the cupboard under the sink and subsequently the floor was bad enough, but some of these are awful! I'm chuckling at them in disbelief as mine was bad enough, I can only imagine some of the expletives that must have been being uttered (or yelled!)

Huge tub of Golden Syrup. It was actually stored atop the cupboards. At the time, I shared a house with a friend and we'd fallen out. Was in the process of moving out with my partner who was visiting when I found it.

We shoved it to the back of the cupboard never to be spoken of again and moved out shortly following. That was 2016. It's probably still there now.

Honey jar smashed. Absolute nightmare! DP tried to clean it which made things worse as he infected all the cleaning items with honey and spread it everywhere with the mop!!

We had 700sqft of sticky floor for about a month. I had to rinse multiple times a day with white vinegar. Shoe soles would be scrubbed daily and soaked in trays of vinegar. Socks quickly turned black as they turned into little sticky dust collectors.

It got to the point where I just banned shoes and socks for a week and everyone wiped their soles with baby wipes intermittently. That was actually the only way we finally resolved it!

Yep - our toddler broke into our cupboard and took out a full jar of honey and threw it on the floor. Glass and honey everywhere and a toddler standing in the middle of it all.

I've had to dispose of dead mice which were full of maggots. Makes me shudder to think about it.

Not an actual spill but tried opening a pressure cooker of dahl a bit too early…. All up the walls, ceiling and me 😳

funniest spillage ever was when me and four colleagues were interviewing and between candidates our finance director opened his healthy smoothie drink that then exploded its milk like substance everywhere, carpet walls, ceiling but funny when he turned round and his face, including glasses were dripping the stuff his tie was covered, he took off the glasses and had the imprint of them clean in a covered face, we were hysterical laughing, goodness knows what the candidate waiting thought😁 honestly one of the funniest moments ever still makes me laugh years later.

I love a visual! Thank you for making me laugh out loud. If ever there’s a new series of The Office, this should certainly be a scene in it.

A huge bag of dark chocolate chips. Doesn’t sound so bad but we have a Labrador who doubles as a hoover…

Oooooo - custard powder is such funny stuff. I think it's the cornflour in it but it's a sheer thickening fluid (when mixed with water) so it changes when put under pressure (it goes hard). Fun to play with but less fun to clear up I would think 😂

omghereistrouble · 02/09/2026 14:35

your kitchens must have smelt lovely! very memorable.
reminds me of two others; my late husband tried home brewing too and stored it under the stairs. one night watching tv they all suddenly exploded it sounded like gun fire! i remember we were frightened to open the door for ages in case they went off again!
one morning our two little ones crept down the stairs while we were asleep and got in the pantry. we went down to a kitchen floor with flour cocoa and orange squash with two lovely kids sat in it! took as long to get off them and out of their hair as when one decided to try the sudocreme to style their hair!

A full bottle of Apple cider vinegar fell out and smashed.
Had to leave the window open for a week.

Hoork · 02/09/2026 14:36

Flour once and sesame seeds 3 times 🫣

cheapskatemum · 02/09/2026 14:38

A large bag of cornflour, which split as I was taking out of the cupboard. There was fine white powder over everything in that corner of the kitchen & cornflour makes everything feel slippery. I decided to vacuum up as much of it as I could. It filled the drum of the vacuum cleaner & and I was emptying that into the bin; it slipped out of my hands & covered that area of the kitchen as well.

blackheartsgirl · 02/09/2026 14:40

Whole bottle of Cooking oil.

free skate rink for a day.

it was bloody awful

whirlyhead · 02/09/2026 14:40

a large new bottle of baileys smashed in my car. That car never lost the stink of curdled milk…

chirrupybird · 02/09/2026 14:50

What we affectionately refer to as 'the pickle bomb'. Large jar of pickle dropped on the tiled kitchen floor and literally went off like a bomb, pickle and small glass chards spread all over the kitchen luckily no one hit by flying glass. Also a lovely sticky mess.

Recently a bag of mustard seeds, tiny seeds that went everywhere, still a load need cleaning off the shelf but I need to empty the cupboard to get them all, which is a task in itself!

Lilacspring · 02/09/2026 14:51

I forgot to put a bag of fresh peppers in the fridge, they went in the cupboard and I forgot about them,a time later I opened the cupboard and they almost walked to the floor,a slimy mess🙄
