any mess is a bad mess but what is the worst thing from your kitchen cupboards that has spilt? i was reaching for something the other day and an opened packet of chia seeds came falling out. now, if you know chia seeds, they are very small and do literally go everywhere! following them a packet of pumpkin seeds decided to join in and spread itself everywhere!

Marmite. It stuck to everything!

Same! DS aged 24 just released his grip before it was over the work top. Sticky stuff with matching coloured glass mixed into it.

Last week my daughter opened the understairs cupboard and one of the (partly used so not full) industrial sized containers of white paint fell out onto the floor - everywhere. And cleaned it up. On Monday I decided the under stairs cupboard needed emptying and clearing out. Loads of stuff covered in white paint and then a tub of blue paint got spilled as well. We were covered in the stuff !!! Luckily we have hard floors.

Olive oil on a pile of ironing

Patriciastaser · 03/09/2026 14:10

Coconut flour was pretty bad.

KeptWomanSummer · 03/09/2026 19:57

Bag of red lentils. Was finding them for YEARS in our old pantry.

I’m sure whoever lives there now is probably finding them.

Mydogisagentleman · 03/09/2026 20:05

About an hour ago, a pot of Aldi potato salad fell over in the car. It's around a litre of sliced potato and mayo/olive oil mixed
To be honest, I can't be arsed to clear it up so my journey to the airport will probably be silent.

CinnamonSweet73 · 03/09/2026 20:30

A bottle of sesame oil, smashed against the edge of the counter, went all over cupboard doors inside and out and all over the floor...took ages to clean and stank for weeks!

beigetriangle · 03/09/2026 20:52

tin of oily fish that blew at the back of the cupboard - gah the smell Envy and the slippery oil made it really difficult to clean up

rotten potatos have a special scent as well

MekUsABrew · 03/09/2026 20:52

Hardest to clean up was probably a giant can of olive oil. One of the kids knocked it over as we were leaving the house and left it as they thought the lid was on, however the lid was not on and it emptied all
down the cupboard and over the floor. It was slippery for ages,, I think all six of us fell over due to the slipperiness despite multiple mopping sessions.

Also really annoying was a large bottle of almond essence which smelled delicious but permanently damaged the paint on the kitchen cupboards.

I see your chia and raise you an exploded tin of mango puree.

(Though I suspect the fish sauce would beat almost any spillage!)

Yes I had a can of plum tomatoes explode in my cupboard and go everywhere.

And I thought my exploding can of plum tomatoes was bad enough.

Poor you

Can of tuna escaped from the shopping bag and got into the spare wheel space. Only discovered some years later when it blew. The stench was horrific.

MissAmbrosia · 03/09/2026 22:12

Not a cupboard, but once I got a lot of beetroot in my veg box so decided to make Borscht. Lots of chopping and boiling and delicious smells. Until final stage where lid flew off the liquidizer and covered my entire kitchen in purple gloop! I didn't bother again.

Cotopaxi · 04/09/2026 00:08

@MissAmbrosia Sorry, but 😂

A devastating update from today. My big jar of sourdough starter just slipped from my hands (because I hadn't screwed the lid on properly). Massive smash and mess all over the kitchen floor- a huge bubbling pool of precious yeasticles full of tiny shards of broken glass.

I painstakingly scooped a couple of teaspoonsful up from the broken bottom of the jar and released them into a fresh jar, with plenty of warm water and a good feed. They look quite vigorous- I might even attempt the loaf I was going to start tonight, maybe putting the starter through a sieve just in case.

Cleaning up a mix of liquid, viscid paste and broken glass isn't easy, is it!

BitterTits · 04/09/2026 17:45

Not spilt from my cupboard, but I was trying (and failing) to make my mum some Turkish Delight for her birthday while staying at my dad's house as a teenager. I'd made up some liquid gelatine mix, not realising it was concentrated, and dropped it - basically a dinner plate-sizer puddle of glue stuck to the lino.

During covid when I jumped on the sourdough bandwagon, I dropped my started on the carpet. It wasn't doing too well, I think I was adding too much water. It never fully came out of the carpet and ther is a chair strategically placed over the stain.

The carpet 😬 At least my kitchen floor is easily mopped! It might cheer you up to hear that Tim Spector says that people who make their own sourdough have healthier gut biomes- not necessarily by eating the bread, as of course all the yeasticles and lactobacillus get killed in the baking process- but by getting it all over our hands etc. Presumably, as our kitchens are now impregnated with lactobacillus, we're picking it up every time we go in there...

So my living room might be keeping us healthy!

Exactly, every time you feel a bit peaky just lick the carpet in that corner. (Disclaimer: not a trained medical professional).

Not from a cupboard but I one knocked over a powder fire extinguisher and the mess was INSANE.

Thick cream powder over my entire kitchen.

Took HOURS to clean up.

Also, it had A Smell.

Oh no. Not The SMELL!

Dilemma999 · 10/09/2026 20:53

A whole bag of lentils. Still finding them a month later.

EmmaB1309 · 11/09/2026 19:55

Red lentils. A full bag.

Highlandoldie · 11/09/2026 20:06

I was heavily pregnant with twins and opening a 2 litre bottle of Diet Coke. It slipped out of my hands and landed on the floor spinning around and spraying all over kitchen. Everywhere 🙈
