What did your parents say when you asked what’s for dinner?

Inspired by the thread about words used in different areas of the UK,
what was the stock answer to ‘What’s for dinner?’ in your house?
In our house it was “Ham, jam and baa lamb”. In my friend’s house it was “Shite with sugar on top”.

You will get what you are given.

Mum would say ''Tatties and stare'' I think that comes from the days when the men got the meat and the children the gravy

I haven't thought about that in years. :) My late dad swore blind he was raised on a diet of scrappy bits that no one else wanted. And as the second son, with a teenage older brother, that was probably pretty true!

Haven’t RTFT but my very old and now deceased MIL told me that her mother used to answer “ chair legs and pump handles - fried.”

I hope it really is only in the family, as if I heard a child speak that way they wouldn't be around my kids for long.

believe it or not my child has the most manners out of his whole friendship group, would never repeat that out of the house.

For me growing up it was either

For my husband, and if my kids ask him or his mum, it’s

• cows cocks and onions.

A run round t’ table and if you’re still hungry you can have a run back for your pudding

Bread and pullit

Fresh air pie.

We had the same thing on every day, so Monday was cottage pie, Tuesday was fritters, Wednesday mini roast, Thursday fishfingers or something quick, Friday was omlette, Saturday was a fry up and Sunday was roast.

This was back in the 70s and my parents had no money, so it saved them a fortune always buying the same stuff. We always knew what to expect.
