I don't think there is any system that relies on volunteers that says "we are British" more that the RNLI. The whole situation could be written for a comedy if it wasn't so real Russia must be wetting themselves, particularly as the ones in Dover were called out because the masked crusaders had gone into the water themselves! Maybe we should let Britannia just take them next time.

25 years since 9/11…
Doesn’t feel that long, and simultaneously feels much longer. It feels like something that had always happened if you see what I mean. I can no longer remember what it was like before it happened. I get a jolt when old film and tv has the twin towers in the skyline..
Still as shocking as ever to think about - my brain shies away from it.

Yes, I know what you mean seeing them in the skyline.

I started my first week of maternity leave when it happened.

I was on annual leave that day. Just sat watching the news, it seemed so unreal. We went to the pub that night and it was absolutely packed.

If 9/11 hadn't happened would we have the likes of Reform, Restore, Robinson, the masked thugs, endless threads on MN?

I’d just started a new job. Schools were really cut off from the outside then, before smart phones. First I heard was when I got in the car after work and the radio came on - I couldn’t work out what was going on. I thought it was a trailer for a disaster based tv series for a while, then it gradually dawned on me what I was listening to. Horrifying.

Our youngest child was 6 weeks old and my mum was with us to help out.

Her daughter and my sister had been working in WTC2 and we couldn't get through to her as all phone lines were down. Mum was silent and extremely anxious. We finally got in touch the next day and sister/daughter had called in sick that morning. She didn't even know what had happened until much later.

I was at work and found out almost at once. It was all over the building. We were due to fly out to Philly with baby DD so her US family could meet her.

The only good thing that day was that DD ended her 6 day nursing strike.

That must have been really scary.

My daughter had just started a new school. She was 5 and we had moved house (from English Midlands to West Wales) for my new job. She went to a tiny village school, Welsh medium and majority of pupils not using Welsh at home. Once I’d realised what was going on, I started to worry about how to explain it to her as I knew she would hear bits and pieces and I didn’t want her to be scared. Turns out school had done it. They’d explained it all, obviously bilingually, and shown a small section of the news footage. I don’t know how they heard, possibly the cook coming in to do the lunches. I was so grateful - they’d done a fantastic job.
Imagine the threads on MN if a school did similar now! When did we stop trusting and working together with schools (and other organisations)?

We decided not to tell our two older children, 6 and 8 about their aunt in New York. Instead they came back from school, I did the pick up and as parents waiting outside, we all agreed not to discuss it.

Instead we carried on as normal and put on a DVD so they wouldn't see the images. Still think about the towers collapsing and the utter horror of it.

It was such a relief to hear my sister's voice.

Both 9/11 and 7/7 had me worrying about my DBs. Younger for 9/11 (he was working at ORNL and used to be a frequent flier to the Pentagon)

And youngest used to travel round London with his job.

So both times as the news came in I felt a little queasy.

However here and now I surely can't have been the only one astounded - nay amazed - at the drone show. Mainly because I thought "well we no longer need artists impressions". Not only can you see where a building will go. You can see inside it if you want.

It was my son's second week at school and we came home to it being on every channel

His aunt and uncle were employed at the Pentagon at the time and it took 12 hours to
confirm they were safe
