Does anyone else feel the UK is heading towards a crisis?

Price rises not coming down, cost of living gone mad, car crashes, heatwave after heat wave, wild fires.
NHS is falling, NHS dentist is like winning the loto, threats from russia.
Bills cost more than anything.
Benefit bill is out of control.
People getting attacked.

I may have missed a few things, but it feels like the UK is just building up to something big gonna kick off.
Im sure it won't but life is just crap right now.
Not to mention we are gonna get a hell of a winter with this EL nion predicted.

I feel like saying lets have a full war and end this crap then re start again( figure of speech), not living just surviving.
And the cost of being a parent now is unreal.

Rant over.

There's an erosion of everything, from care to ability to play a sport, access to water, building with no infrastructure or indeed any focus on how it is built, transport, to anti social behaviour... and then there's the issue of the inept that manage our country!! Education is about to be dumbed down (you really should be worried about how this will separate our society) and then there's health, not just the NHS but the divide in approach to it. I really do feel like I'm in a Dickens novel at times.

I agree unless you live in London its a different story.
I live in Norfolk and very little opportunity here, certainly lsck of road and rail connectivity.
Norwich is slowly developing but the cosstal town like where i live are starting to make you not feel safe walking around a night

Then the government should look after its own people and interests first

When exactly do you think that the Government has not been looking after its own interest, ever? The Governments have never cared about the poor, and 'lower classes'. Nothing has changed, in that respect.

MNLurker1345 · 23/08/2026 10:43

It is all a bit crap at the moment. I
am a child of the 70s. It was definitely crap then also.

We had high inflation, strikes, shortages and de-industrialisation. We had power cuts, the three day week, rubbish piling up on the streets during strikes, disruption to transport and public services and the “Winter of Discontent”

Inflation at 20%. High Unemployment. The pound was weak, we had to go to the IMF in 1976. As well as :-

  • Football hooliganism
  • NF
  • The Troubles
  • Brutalist architecture
  • Britain was a dirty, run down country
  • We wore flares and platform shoes

I hate the 70s with a passion. I felt it destroyed my childhood. I can’t even see
a program on TV, say The Sweeney or The Professionals without my stomach turning.

So do I think “something big gonna kick off”, no I don’t. It didn’t then and it was bad!

Today’s problem are more multifaceted, I would say in that they are more widespread and immigration is a big factor.

What is the solution? A fundamental change of our political culture over a couple of decades. There is no quick fix.

But will we descend into anarchy. No, I don’t think so.

The dentist one is going to be dreadful... Kids that's can't get into an NHS dentist surely there will be a massive fall out from this as most just won't go.

Like you say NHS dentist is like winning the lottery.

I was in Turkey last year and the amount of young people ( under 30 ) who were have there teeth fixed was unreal - not for vanity but because there teeth were awful land they couldn’t afford it in the uk

Nutmuncher · 23/08/2026 10:45

People seem to be incredibly ok with it all though which is what makes me go hmmm. If folks were truly despairing then you would see some action being taken, yet nothing is seemingly being done to raise the point or ask why things are the way they are.

Feels like a large majority have simply accepted their fate and buckled up for the slide further down in living standards and aspirations.

Illicililly · 23/08/2026 10:47

Since Andy Burnham took over, I feel slightly more optimistic. I can see that he’s actively doing something to make things better.

I really like his plans for the homeless. Critics argue that he will never achieve his aim, to give everyone a home but that isn’t a reason not to try. For every homeless person that is helped, that’s a win in my book.

Absolutely untrue.

Well it seems ( according the press ) that AS get free nhs treatment

Even if they were eligible, that does not mean that they are actively being treated. I am eligible for NHS dental treatment. Can I find a surgery within a 50 mile radius, that is willing to take me on. No. Being eligible for, and receiving, are two differnt things!

Simonjt · 23/08/2026 10:58

Ihateboris · 23/08/2026 10:32

But they have a point regarding free dentist etc. Why should immigrants be entitled to this when we aren't?

As an immigrant can you let me know what special free dentistry I was supposedly entitled to that british citizens aren’t.

NeelyOHara · 23/08/2026 11:00

CorporalJohn · 23/08/2026 09:48

That I can live with.

It's the fact it's being taken over by moronic half-wits who can spout such rubbish (& probably vote for Farage as well) that pisses me off.

Nothing wrong with the UK that couldn't be fixed by deporting all Reform supporters (& those of similar parties). Vermin, the lot of them.

You sound like an absolute peach yourself. Who the hell describes people as vermin?

So they couldn’t afford the average £15 for monthly dentistry in uk or the cost of a UK filling but can regularly afford to fly to Turkey and pay for flights and hotels on top of the price of a filling and check ups in Turkey. Ok I smell bullshit!

Huge apologies. I should have said asylum seekers, not immigrants. Profuse apologies. I'm currently suffering with severe toothache and I'm taking medication which is causing confusion 😕

My gardener, lovely chap, who doesn't look after his teeth and gets kicked off NHS dentist registration because he never goes, and leaves it until he ends up at some emergency centre in the middle of the night for another extraction, said to me “I might have to go to Turkey to get some implants done”. I was
like “what!” And gave him a little lecture on the importance of oral hygiene. He is on the minimum wage, but thought Turkey was the way to go.

It is a trend. The British dentistry system is problematic but I don’t think Turkish dentistry situation is solely down to that, follow fashion and cosmetic more like.

If he doesn’t look after his teeth I have zero sympathy.

You forgot to mention the free driving lessons, and the free cars that they are supposed to be getting as well.🥱

Actually if you qualify for High rate mobility
mobility foundation will pay for you to learn to drive
once passed you can use the pip to get a Motobility car

OhBotherSaidPoo · 23/08/2026 11:13

I wrote this on a thread not 12 hours ago.

Roman citizens didn’t even know Rome fell, they just noticed the roads and bridges had stopped being repaired.

At what point do we, as voters, as citizens, and as Brits, stand up and stop voting for the global elite whilst society goes to shit.

AS get dental and medical. They actually get taxied to their appointments if there's no dentist within walkable distance.
We don't.

Yes if there isn’t a local GP or dentist available to see them, never fear a taxi will be called.

That is for severely disabled people. I am talking about those people who seem to believe that asylum seekers are having free lessons, and then being provided with free cars. No such thing was happening, but some people were more than willing to lap up the lies, that it was.

Lol who said they were skint and who said it was for fillings

a crown and root canal is between 800 -1500 quid each in the uk
so if you need 2 that’s probably 2000’-3000 plus any checkups and X-rays
1 implant in the uk is around 4k - well it was when I asked a few years ago

you can fly to Turkey and a crown / rootcanal is roughly 200 /250
Turkish dentist often include hotels and transfers so it’s just your flight which if you go off season it can be around 150 quid or less return

I’ve had my teeth done in Turkey a few years ago there was actually very little wrong with my teeth and I’ve never even had a filling in my life mine was more of a vanity project 😂

I had mainly crowns and a bridge & 1 root canal
I still see my uk dentist for a check up every year and the hygienist and they were both impressed with my Turkish teeth 😂

i still go to Turkey for holidays and it was mainly young people last time having there teeth done which surprised me as they were young so should in theory have decent teeth

SunmerWater · 23/08/2026 11:23

frozendaisy · 23/08/2026 10:24

It’s harder for them to get in a position to consider it. Secure, decent paid work is needed before a mortgage.

Companies that would’ve invested in UK invest in the EU, organisations that were funded by the EU, with interesting, secure, decently paid positions have obviously moved out.

The UK still has its stock exchange but for how much longer.

Being a serviced based economy Brexit was utterly idiotic and the Brexit god Farage should’ve known that, well he probably did, but many fell for his snake oil, still do.

We (as a family) can’t complain about immigration as we are going to encourage our teens to emigrate.

More if the same right-wing, isolationist nonsense is going to make things worse not better. But here we are.

I agree with some of this. I love the way those in the UK want to help cause a lot of the problems immigrants are fleeing from, to shut the door to them but feel entitlement for their kids to emigrate to wherever they choose . It’s a bit like Farage’s hypocrisy. Having shut the doors for the entire nation to live, study and work across 27 member states his kids have EU passports legally entitling them to retain the freedom to live, study, and work across the 27 member states of the European Union following Brexit.

bowlingalleyblues · 23/08/2026 11:26

I completely agree, we are breaking/being broken. I talk to friends who live in the UK, Europe, US, Africa and they are all saying the same: cost of housing rising massively, investors buying up land and homes, cost of living etc, it’s not a UK problem it’s a global one.

We all know there are lots of poor countries in the world, experiencing problems like: lack of access to clean drinking water in areas, education and health underfunded and inadequate, professionals like teachers, healthcare workers and public servants struggle to pay bills, high unemployment rates, young people leaving and migrating, massive gap between rich and poor, disheveled streets, corruption widespread in politics, money and the countries assets siphoned off to big corporations and investors, some of the population struggle to feed themselves, government bankrupt due to borrowing at high rates, destroying the environment and big business crushing the little guy - making it impossible for people to survive as small farmers or craftspeople so they have to move to cities and lose their communities.

This is the story of lots of poorer countries in the world, but it’s happening to us too. We are locked into the rules of a game the richer countries and wealthy people have built up and over decades many poor countries have been hollowed out and life is incredibly hard, hence many people desperate to get out. The same has been happening to the UK (selling off council homes, privatising water, transport, utilities and uk based businesses sold off to private equity, corrupt politicians) and I don’t think it will get better, we are locked in to this rotten globalised system and even though it’s destroying us, our country and our planet we seem unable to get out of it.

I have to agree with you on this.
I pay £79 every six months for a check up.
I dont have small kids mine are adults now, but a dentist is very important.

Just hopping on this, I pay £12 per month for Denplan for two children. That covers check ups as well as emergency treatment. It’s so worth it.

My HV told me to go private with DC as NHS dentists are so stretched they’re cannot afford to preform the dentistry they should so teeth are being removed unnecessarily, etc

Yes (second paragraph) I was also told that by a health professional. NHS dentists either removing teeth rather than saving them or else the wait is so long that the patient has to seek emergency treatment elsewhere.

Monty36 · 23/08/2026 11:34

I don’t think we are about to go to War. But the impact of War elsewhere will come to us. And Governments elsewhere will negatively affect us. Their policies will hurt. From America to Europe to Russia.

The climate will change what we do and how we do it.
We need to ensure we elect people who are not corrupt. Who do have the ability to lead, to manage our country for its benefit and not their individual personal one. Who can develop policies that work in our interests.
