The long lasting chicken meal and other MN legends [light hearted]

Most MN know that a chicken can feed a family of 6 over several meals. What is your record?
Our chicken fed 8 of us when the kids were young for two meals. We sent it to the chip shop after the stove broke down.😀
Other MN legends - washing being darked on because it was left out overnight.
Any that you've heard on MN inthe respect if your heard them said irl you know the speaker is an MNer?

The stories from the well-known MN fantasist who I won't name but she was basically pretending to be Jilly Cooper with friends in Tony Blairs cabinet.

One Xmas Eve her DD was working a shift as a trainee Dr before getting the last ferry home but was late. The OP managed to contact the ferry Captain who made an announcement to the entire ferry saying embarkation would be delayed for a trainee Dr who wouldn't make it home for Xmas unless they waited for her.

When she got on, the crew presented her with champagne and mince pies and everyone on the ferry clapped.

I joined just as the post Moldies/Mouldies (can’t remember the spelling) fall out was happening. Everybody was speaking in code. It was fascinating. But due to the coded speech I was mostly in the dark as to who had flounced and why some people weren’t invited to co-flounce.

Washingupdone · 23/08/2026 09:26

Someone wrote about the neighbours across a stream at the bottom of the garden. They crossed the stream and put a huge sheet up, attached to the trees, during the night, on the writer’s land to block the view onto their property.

Yes! And then original OliviaMNHQ wouldn’t allow any mention of her 🤣 I miss original OliviaMNHQ
I think it was Talcs or someone who created the beautiful artwork with Mitmoo’s name made out of Flowers - that must have taken some time!

Yes, TalcandTurnips did the flower words. I don’t have the Mitmoo one, but I did take a screenshot of this one…

Cutted up pear made me chuckle.

Easter bonnet made me howl, no pun intended.

And the one where a poster wrote a really long, normal OP but something clearly went wrong with her phone and it went something like "and then I couldn't decide if it was better to do it before tieeerhgggj ni mor po tieth"

The replies were fantastic.

Always wondered if I was the cause of "naice ham." I always wrote my shopping list like:

Bread
Nice bread

Because the first is normal sliced, and the second is corn bread or olive bread, something nicer. I had nice bread, nice ham, nice cheese etc. Apparently it stemmed from someone finding such a list in a shopping basket and thinking it hilarious. I still do it now 🤷

I think the "naice ham" thing caught on mainly due to the spelling, and then people pronouncing it that way in their heads - I certainly always think of it as "Nayce" rather than "nice" when I see that spelling.

That’s just like the good old days of “ASCII Art” on a PC.

Lemon drizzle bitch was brilliant - PTA member complained bitterly about an OP’s LDC (I think this sold very quickly at a school fete, unlike PTA bitch’s offering)

Bupcakesandcunting’s itchy vag, which she did try to name change for

I can’t remember the poster, but the bollicle was very funny

Anything by the incredible late CatThiefKeith 💔

Was the lemon drizzle bitch thread the one with THE "PUNCH THE CAKE. PUNCH IT." comment? Because that has lived in my memory ever since.

Yep 😀

The hedgehogs finger up the bum had me wheezing for hours.
My mum told me she hangs her washing overnight and I instantly said "but wont it get darked on" and something about spider willies and she looked at me like I'd grown 2 heads 😐

You wouldn't catch me dead with a germy toilet brush in my house 🤮

I wash my toilet brush, how do you clean your toilet with a germy cloth ?

The lost plate.
A heart warming story of MN ingenuity involving a spatula and lube

Edited

The booble plate! I still think about that.

The woman who had diarrhoea and swallowed a piece of Lego to see how long it took to transit.

Teenagerantruns · 23/08/2026 13:01

The lost ironing board.
The Mexican house thief
Canel the cheque
I miss the Christmas presents swaps.
Also drunk friday threads were so funny, now we would have loads of people threatening to report us to social.services.

It wasn't spelt "naice" initially. It became naice as a piss take of the "nice" ham. Presumably in a Hyacinth Bucket accent.

I was most offended at the time. At first I thought it was so commonplace I figured it could have been anyone's shopping list. Turns out other people don't do that. Baffles me. If you put "nice bread" then it just means peruse the nice bread until you find the one you want. I don't know if I want focaccia until I see what else is on offer 🤷

Was that the celebrating Te Noihydc thread, or a different one? The former ended up far funnier than it should have done, with all the responses!

Everhopeful777 · 24/08/2026 05:38

These have had me howling - I have tears rolling down my face.

Can anyone remember the women who went off to work and her husband was ill that day. She came home & he claimed to have been "drifting in and out of consciousness" all day. Upon further discussion, she worked out he'd been laid on the sofa all day just waking up and dropping back off to sleep! 🤣🤣

There was also another funny thread re the "dressing gown of doom" but I can't remember the details. Can anyone remember?

scalt · 24/08/2026 06:56

The many “shoes off” threads, but one reply I particularly remember is that it’s a “global standard” to remove one’s shoes before going inside. Mumsnet has even been referenced on the website TV Tropes for this.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 18/08/2026 13:36

My mum used to be able to get three meals for four of us out of one chicken/joint of meat, @Thisismyfinesthour. Roast on Sunday, cold with bubble and squeak on Monday, then made into something like a curry, risotto, shepherd's pie on Tuesday. I think she did it by giving much smaller portions of meat, and more of the veg and potatoes (but not big portions of those either, to be honest).

Shepherds pie made with leftover chicken? 😱 what are you?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 24/08/2026 16:15

I did say chicken/joint of meat, @Deboragh - the shepherd’s pie was made with left over minced beef. And yes, I do know that is really cottage pie, because it wasn’t made with lamb, but shepherd’s pie is what mum called it.

Manename · 24/08/2026 17:49

Was there a thread about a fake bird, think from Argos a raven or a crow. The person answering the questions was answering questions completely straight. Can’t find it, so maybe it’s in my imagination.

I can’t remember the full story but you’ll know it if you know it - “snapped and farted”

Remember this ha ha

FFSItsTooHot · 24/08/2026 18:00

Snapped and farted. Oh how I laughed at that 😂

FFSItsTooHot · 24/08/2026 18:02

The poster who mistakenly typed 'boil in the vag' instead of 'boil in the bag'.
