I have messed up. My house is quite a mess recently. Yesterday complex needs person rang me asked to come for a home visit which is today. Late afternoon. I agreed on purpose because it will force me to properly tidy up.

I'm sorting Dd16 bedroom. I have totally emptied it out carpet up. Which has taken me 5 days. Ds was going to take the roll of lino up from downstairs but he was on the phone. So i came down stairs to rest for a bit. About 30 mins later ds took the lino up for me. I was meant to go back up but I didn't. I cant do it on my own I can barely lift it. Ds can't help today because he's moving out.

Only thing I can think of is to ask dd16 to help me. Its her room I'm doing. But I really cant be arsed with crappy teenage strops. But also she's been at her sisters for a week because I'm taking so long to do the bedroom. And really she should be home and its because of me that she's not. She's quite happy at her sisters but thats not the point. It was just meant ti be for a couple of nights stretching to 3 wouldn't have been so bad but its been a week. I feel like I have dumped her.

Laying Lino is really difficult heavy job I would scrap the Lino mop the floor twice and paint it with white emulsion mixed with water. It gives a really modern look in fact get your daughter to do that.

OP has already bought the lino. You'd scrap something you paid £££ for to avoid some heavy lifting? Really?

I thought I was lazy, but that's beyond even my level of laziness.

I have done some of the smaller rooms /areas but this one is bigger and heavier.

Ds with special needs is only 11 and he wouldn't be able to.

Can't get somone in. I don't have the money for that.

I was in this situation as well before and DD was also refusing to come home until it was all done (in her defence tho she does have allergies).

I ended up going for a quicker flooring option, it wasn’t quite what I wanted but I managed to do it in a day. There was no lift in my building, it was horrendous. I changed t shirts like 4 times throughout the day due to how sweaty I was.

It’s very difficult when you don’t have the means or the support to help you out.

vickylou78 · 28/07/2026 11:47

Op are you sure you can't pay a handy man to lay the flooring? I was quoted about £40-50 for a similar job. Then it would be done properly and quickly. But also have you thought about asking a friend or neighbour just to help with moving it into position and then once it's laid out in correct orientation you could do the edge cutting etc.

5128gap · 28/07/2026 11:47

I think you need to stop seeing the HV as something to get ready for. If you have complex needs, no one will expect you to have everything in perfect order. Concentrate on making sure the basics are in place for health and hygiene. We all have bigger projects in various stages at some point or another.
If you need to rest and mentally prepare for the visit, prioritise that. Just tell the visitor that you are pacing yourself with the bedroom work, what you've achieved so far and your intentions to complete it.

DidYeAye16 · 28/07/2026 11:49

Whyohwhy99 · 28/07/2026 11:03

Yeah thats out of site anyway. I'm le doing down stairs which won't take long. I can worry about up stairs a bit later.

Be kind to yourself, sounds like you have alot going on and that's mentally draining. Stick some music on and just do what you can and what will be visible. I always find headphones help keep me more focused on the job than playing it through TV or radio as it stops my mind drifting. Maybe in a few days when your ds is settled he could help with the lino if he's not moving too far away.

chirrupybird · 28/07/2026 12:00

From bitter experience I now do carpet tiles. You don't have to carry heavy lino or carpet, and you can do the room in areas so you don't have to lift out all the furniture just move it around (unless it's a very small room). And an added advantage if any bits get stained or damaged you can just replace those bits or move them to a less visible place. You can add rugs if you think it looks a bit basic.

Laminate or LVP is the way forward, after fitting the vinyl in DD's room, never again. It is technically easier to lay vinyl; it's quicker to lay vinyl but just the mention of hauling a roll of vinly that must have weighed at least 10 stone up the stairs, manipulating it around corners when it is 10ft long and then turning it the right way around after the effort of yanking all the skirting boards off the wall and praying the shitty, rotten plasterboard didn't come off with them...

Nope. Laminate is more technically difficult and takes longer, but once you get the hang of measuring and cutting it, it's a piece of piss.

Lino in a bedroom?
who is the complex needs person and why do they need to visit your house?

MiddleAgedDread · 28/07/2026 12:12

why does someone coming to fill in forms for your son have anything to do with needing to fit flooring in your daughter's bedroom??

PinkyFlamingo · 28/07/2026 12:16

Whyohwhy99 · 28/07/2026 09:39

I have already ready taken the carpet up its a bar floor now.

I think maybe i worded my op badly. Ds11 has autism and hes about to started sen school. So a complex needs person comes out to fill in forms and i don't know what else. But its for ds just a one off thing.

Yes but did it need changed?

purplecorkheart · 28/07/2026 12:19

In regards to the lino - would you consider asking a few neighbors to help bring it upstairs for you obviously that depends on your neighbors.

Otherwise I suggest asking your daughters to line up a few friends to help and offer them pizzas etc to say thanks.

Nothing. They are 2 separate things that I need to do. I was just saying what I need to do

I don't know much about it. DS is starting sen school in September. Its something to do with that. I only found out yesterday. Its done for all children starting the school.

Your visitor has no reason to go into your DD's room. Close the door, focus on the areas she might see. Focus on actual dirt and mess, not just untidiness.

Aslana · 28/07/2026 13:06

Buy some sturdy rugs. They are not expensive online and can be moved around when your daughter is cleaning her floor!

Fingeronthebutton · 28/07/2026 13:11

I appreciate you needed to reach out for help but the job would have been done by now if you hadn’t wasted time here.

🤔 The down has been done. I said up thread I was going to get on with it. I just need to mop. I can't do that just yet.

The lino I can't just get on with.

Where are you up to with the lino? If it helps I can help you break it down into steps?

This is bizarre advice. For a start you don't even know what her floor beneath the carpet is made of. It could be rough concrete, decent floor boards, terrible floorboards, nailed down hardboard or those old Marley vinyl tiles used to be stuck down in every new build in the 60s and 70s and are virtually impossible to remove, so people end up boarding them over.

The only floor I would ever paint with watered down emulsion would be perfectly smoothed and prepped floorboards, and even then they'd need sealing or waxing or varnishing or they'd be impossible to keep clean. You can't mop unsealed emulsion. Confused It would hideous from a maintenance POV.

The lino is in the room. Rolled up. I'm going to give it a go after the complex needs person has been.

Edited

Its sheets of wood its laid well . But its not something should be white washed . As you say thats for nice floor boards.

Can I ask why are you so set on putting lino down? It is not a normal choice for a bedroom (I understand that you already have it and want to use it up.) I think at the moment I would give it up as a bad job and invest in a couple of large rugs that will cover the floorboards.

YourWildAmberSloth · 28/07/2026 14:10

It feels like there's a big bit of the story missing, when you talk about not wanting to deal with teenage strops. Unless there's something significant going on, your daughter should be helping - its her room, and 'not dealing with her stroppy behaviour' means not parenting her, and wearing yourself out in the process. Perhaps you could ask about parenting classes and/or family therapy. In the meantime, if she wants her room finished, she'll need to help.
