Pensioners with a few bob getting the SRP they're entitled to, and parents on decent money getting DLA to help pay for the extra costs of their child's disability shouldn't really be on our radar while we have billionaires hoovering up wealth. Relatively ordinary working people shouldn't be trying to fight over crumbs while 0.07% of the population enjoy a feast.
I'm hoping Burnham goes for the wealth tax before cutting any form of welfare.

Exactly this. It's all a distraction.

placemats · 20/07/2026 22:43

Well yes that's a given @5128gap

BIossomtoes · 20/07/2026 22:39

Would they? So nobody who owns a house can claim benefits?

Meanwhile reform et al want to go after people on disability benefits. Millionaires should not be receiving state benefits. End of.

Do you want a wealth tax?

That doesn’t answer my question. Do you think that nobody who owns a house should be able to claim benefits?

Some disabled people on PIP might have a million in assets including property. 🤔

Streeting got Defence. Apparently it's what Reeves was offered first.
Second choice Streeting.

Badvocthebad · 20/07/2026 22:52

Glad Lammy is out.
Misogynistic pig 😡

TemperanceWest · 20/07/2026 22:53

Honestly, this thread has taken some odd turns today. I never thought I'd be arguing on here with folk who think pensioners, including disabled pensioners, should be forced to sell up their homes.

Phew. I thought he was going to be deputy PM.

Well, exactly.

That oh so awkward £5million comes to mind, for a start.

Indeed. PIP and (sorry to bring age into it) Attendance Allowance are not income based. Rightly so. After state pension age, you cannot make a new claim for PIP, it has to be Attendance Allowance. Those on PIP before pension age get it indefinitely.

Monty36 · 20/07/2026 23:01

All that hope. Then he gives Rayner her old job back. And the hope has gone .

Badvocthebad · 20/07/2026 23:04

Very disappointed WS is still in govt.

Oh that's a classy move from Reeves.

Zonder · 20/07/2026 23:09

Yup.

Never thought I'd be in a Labour meeting where it was suggested that pensioners living in a council house would be 'asked' to move out of their homes to make way for families.

Quite. It’s depressing the way this thread has turned today.

Is that Hadrian's Wall?

Is that some kind of sick joke?

dontcallmelen · 21/07/2026 03:27

Surprised Lisa Nandy stayed as culture secretary, haven’t digested yet all the appointments glad Angela Rayner is back though, hoping everything settles in the next few days & the PM & cabinet get on with governing.
im off on holiday peace & love 💕
