I leaned into the culottes and polka dot trend this season and was delighted with this bargain in Sainsburys last week. I thought I looked great. Effortless and summery chic etc etc. Until 14yo DD looked up at me with withering disdain and asked why was I dressed like a Tombliboo.

We had a similar situation last year when I bought a striped teeshirt and they called me Bagpuss for the whole summer.

My 16 year old steals my clothes and I never see them again. I might start dressing like a tombliboo but she’d probably find it ironic and steal that too.

Young people don't know anything why would you react with anything besides contempt??

Basic white, cotton maxi summer dress. DD asked whether it's a thing for "women your age" to WANT to look like a Utah Mormon milk maid...

Over here with my two under four In the Night Garden fans, and wow! Brutal. But once you see it you just can’t unsee it 😂 sorry OP. I would have loved them too at first but would be singing the Tombliboo song every time I put them on.

Well, my DF was just as savage in the 90s when I was a teenager. It never stopped me wearing anything, maybe that's why I like the comments from my teenage DSs. Sadly my DF is not around anymore as it would have been brilliant having them all outwitting each other.

Teenagers are a constant delight. 😂😂😂

I have three late teen/young adult kids (two daughters) and they are brutal, but I have to admit it’s my own fault. They have heard the way I speak of myself and they pile in too. How I feel about is the tone and intention. Mine are not being malicious, but it’s good-hearted stirring. Wear your culottes and weight loss with pride. If your daughter is being mean, definitely have a word and ask her if there is a reason. If not, ask if she wants to come for a ride in the Ninkynonk.

My mum used to take me shopping with her so I could criticise clothes in advance. She says that way if I OK’d it and couldn’t find anything awful to say about it, she could have full confidence that it was great!

She was always very nicely dressed though.

Lots of these have made me laugh but 'a whaler' has just totally finished me.

I bought a lovely knee length black puffer from Uniqlo

Not teens but actually me doing the put downs. At a family party several years ago, MIL and SIL coincidentally both wore plain brown trousers and plain brown tops. I was wearing a very boho kaftan sort of thing with big floaty sleeves in lots of bright colours.

I was a bit drunk and DH came over to take a photo of us. I was in the middle with MIL and SIL on either side. I said 'Oh look! We look like a butterfly between two tree trunks!'

Amazingly they are both still speaking to me.

I wore a khaki shirt dress recently and DS asked me why I was dressed like an explorer 🤣

I wear what I like even if it isn't 'suitable' for my age.

I splashed out on a shawl which I’d had my eye on in a local pricey boutique. It was cream and had quite large brightly coloured pom-poms around the hem on all four sides. I was really pleased with it and felt it was really quite stylish.

I put it on the next day and went down to the kitchen. My 12 year old DS was sitting at the kitchen table eating cereal. Without even really looking up, in a resigned sort of tone he said, ‘oh hello Mr Tumble’.

He’s 21 years old now. I still haven’t worn the shawl.

My DD's pal once came to tea age 6. Told me "I like your earrings and I also like your top. They don't go together but you still made a nice try" 🤣🤣

When I read that, up popped a vision of you walking behind her softly humming the theme tune to the programme. I'm doing it now!

DD asked to borrow a top of mine. I felt super cool for 3 seconds until she said - it's for Drama, I need to look like a tired mum.

And DS calls me Obelix thanks to my new blue and white stripy shorts. Putting them back on Vinted.
