I leaned into the culottes and polka dot trend this season and was delighted with this bargain in Sainsburys last week. I thought I looked great. Effortless and summery chic etc etc. Until 14yo DD looked up at me with withering disdain and asked why was I dressed like a Tombliboo.

We had a similar situation last year when I bought a striped teeshirt and they called me Bagpuss for the whole summer.

When I read that, up popped a vision of you walking behind her softly humming the theme tune to the programme. I'm doing it now! Grin

Exactly what happens, yes!

A 14 year old is never going to like the same as you so if you like them go for it (I think they’re lovely). I get teased all the time about stuff I wear, my long padded Joules coat made me look like Arsene Venger the old Arsenal manager apparently!

WhatNextImScared · Yesterday 06:33

Ha ha! At that age I once told my mother she looked like she “had a tablecloth wrapped round her bum” when she bought a new skirt. She tells this story because she went into work and was complimented on it by everyone but she said she didn’t like it as much after that -oops!

Tombliboo is objectively funny though 🤣

fwiw I love the trousers, night garden or none!

I splashed out on a shawl which I’d had my eye on in a local pricey boutique. It was cream and had quite large brightly coloured pom-poms around the hem on all four sides. I was really pleased with it and felt it was really quite stylish.

I put it on the next day and went down to the kitchen. My 12 year old DS was sitting at the kitchen table eating cereal. Without even really looking up, in a resigned sort of tone he said, ‘oh hello Mr Tumble’.

He’s 21 years old now. I still haven’t worn the shawl.

HAHAHA!

But the shawl sounds lovely too.

I just remembered that my son told me that my new long boots made me look like a ninja garden gnome. (I think he was five or six). While he was probably totally right, I had to repeatedly remind myself that in his eyes that was a great compliment.

DD11 is still polite (for now). DH is brutal though. I was 9 months pregnant and we were going out to the theatre. I wore skinny jeans and a bright orange top. Was very pleased with how well I looked and felt. DH said I looked like a Belisha beacon. I gave birth 3 days later. It’s a wonder we are still married!

If teenagers girls are brutal about your appearance, give it back to them. Fight fire with fire.

If I had criticised my parents appearance in that tone back in the 1960s I would have expected a slap across the face.

That’s awful. 😞

Great thread!

I once bought a gorgeous velvet burgundy/violet blazer with gold-coloured military-style buttons from Vinted that I planned to wear with a mini-skirt and DMs - but when I tried it on my DSs told me I looked like Willy Wonka!

SoTiredSoTiredSoTired · Yesterday 07:11

I was stupid enough to buy a lovely Ines de la Fressange shirt dress. Lovely herringbone fabric, covered buttons, tasteful pleats, right length, matched my eyes...

DS7: "You look like Martha out of the Secret Garden. You've got the strong arms and legs too."

He was right. Housemaid/ nurse vibes circa 1910, perfectly showing off my untoned overweight limbs. I've never worn it...

hadthecandyflosson · Yesterday 07:23

I wore an all black dress and accessories etc last September for an awards ceremony through work and I came down stairs 10 minutes before leaving and my DD said

“Halloween is next month” rolled her eyes and carried on talking to her friend on the phone saying “hermione granger just flew into my living room”

ahh I love my kids

My child is non-verbal, with profound special needs including learning disabilities, so you’d think I’d be fairly safe from this sort of thing. You would be wrong. Was in M&S the other day, and I tried on a straw hat. He laughed so hard he almost passed out, then leaned over, took it off my head and dropped it disdainfully on the floor before trying to very firmly steer me away from the hat section. Harsh!

I love that! Non verbal definetly doesn’t mean having nothing to say 😂

BoldAquaOP · Yesterday 07:26

I had some new check trousers, I thought I looked pretty cool in them, 13 year old immediately asked if I should be dropped to the local harvester to do my day shift in the kitchen.

Wore what I thought was a very cool rust coloured and yellow top until my DD told me I looked like a packet of smokey bacon crisps.

I’m sat in a hotel eating breakfast reading this.

Everyone then looked up as this made me proper snort laugh 🫣🤣

I think it is our duty to wear clothes that slightly embarrass our teenagers. My husband has a selection of cardigans that he used to wear for this very purpose. Now the teenagers have grown into their 20s they don’t care.
ignore the comments and enjoy your culottes. Bagpuss though 🤣

Oh yay I feel less alone! Savage isn’t it? Anyway fuck this, tomorrow I’m going to wear my trousers and spend all day in my extraordinary bush stacking my blocks. See how they like that.

Soviet grandmother 😁

What’s this about an extraordinary bush!!?

I bought a gorgeous sage and cream striped T shirt to go with my sage jeans and cream jacket. Dd15 said I looked like a pistachio vanilla icecream. And then add, “oh and stripes mum? Just no.”

Tbf as lovely as they all sound individually, together it might be a bit much. I’d contrast with a rust T-shirt or something.

peaceatnight · Yesterday 07:52

I I feel exceptionally smug to be a mum of boys now. 😁. I have a teen and pre-teen and they tell me I look great. I can tell if something really doesn’t work as they’ll look doubtful if I ask, but that’s it.

But seriously, why are so many of you paying attention to what your kids say?! They talk shit! As a child I used to tell my dad his singing and guitar playing was dreadful, like a cat etc. I thought he knew this was an in joke we shared. I never meant it. I was horrified as an adult to discover he stopped playing his guitar as a result of me!

Lesson: ignore your kids when the put you down.

And discourage your daughters from bitching about other people’s outfits. People can wear what they like .

Communication at its finest 🤣

(I work in Sen Ed with pupils with sld and pmld and they are the masters of silently getting their opinion heard 😉)

I gpt a black and white striped pants recently which I thought was cool.

My daughter took one look and said " beetlejuice, beetlejuice, beetlejuice!"

One time I was in the local pub wearing blue jeans and an open white shirt with a vest top inside feeling fab and a random leaned over to me and asked me was I just back from a Michael Bolton impersonation convention. Never wore that again.

😂 love that re Michael Bolton, definitely one for the adults though. Kids would be clueless.

Redcrescentmoon · Yesterday 08:02

I bought what I thought was a lovely dress until my DS (12 at the time) saw me trying it on and asked me why I was dressed like I was in ‘The Handmaids Tale’. It went straight back the next day 🤦🏻‍♀️🤣

This reminds me of a meltdown I had at 13 when my Dad thought he was going to parents evening in a burgundy turtleneck jumper. Seems ok now but at the time it was world ending 😆

Similar, in that I had a meltdown about my Dad wearing brown ‘slacks’ to a parent meeting.
He still laughs about it now (but thankfully the brown trousers have long gone!).

Yellowpingu · Yesterday 08:07

I have a (fairly expensive) leather backpack which I once paired with a straw hat. We get out of the car, I pop the backpack on my back and DH said ‘Come on then, Dora!’

Devon06 · Yesterday 08:15

ha ha lovely! my son told me i had spent too much time and money on my face and my body was now looking like a old granny’s!
