I leaned into the culottes and polka dot trend this season and was delighted with this bargain in Sainsburys last week. I thought I looked great. Effortless and summery chic etc etc. Until 14yo DD looked up at me with withering disdain and asked why was I dressed like a Tombliboo.

We had a similar situation last year when I bought a striped teeshirt and they called me Bagpuss for the whole summer.

DS meant the shirt made me look like a Russian sailor, of course I looked it up, white shirt somewhat narrow blue stripes but horizontal not diagonal, like mine. Now if I wore the shirt with that strange dinner plate on a brim hat they wear.... :-)

They wear distinctive blue and white striped t-shirts, and in summer they don't wear jackets when they're off-duty, so in Russian port cities (and indeed in Moscow when I was there) you often see a lot of them wandering around dressed like that in their down-time / shore leave.

Depends what the new item looks like. I think it is funny when my daughter tells me the truth about my clothes
