Nothing like a teenage daughter to keep you humbled…

I leaned into the culottes and polka dot trend this season and was delighted with this bargain in Sainsburys last week. I thought I looked great. Effortless and summery chic etc etc. Until 14yo DD looked up at me with withering disdain and asked why was I dressed like a Tombliboo.

We had a similar situation last year when I bought a striped teeshirt and they called me Bagpuss for the whole summer.

If this is what girls do, I'm glad I have a boy.

My DS 16 has a very keen aesthetic eye. I very often preeent a range of clothing accessories in front of him and ask him to choose for me. Other than that thankfully he doesn’t comment!!

‘An English teacher who has made deputy head’. How utterly withering 😂😂😂. As that’s me, I now need to know what that supposedly looks like!

I believe it was cropped black trousers, a long white floaty shirt over a black vest, DM Chelsea boots and dangly sun and moon earrings.
I was once stopped by a woman in a bookshop and asked for advice on revision books for KS2 English for her granddaughter, apparently she asked me because I looked like I might be a teacher, so maybe I just have that look!

No, boys are just as cheeky and quick witted. It might just make them chuckle like that child again, it’s done with love in jest, my children crack me up sometimes.
I bet you didn’t find your parent’s style very appealing unless of course you are in a minority on this. When they look like a cartoon character then you must say so.

ANightAtTheOpera · 25/07/2026 00:42

Teenage boys can be just as bad! We took our 14 yr old on a rib boat ride on the local river ‘cause we’re cool like that and enjoy a wee adrenaline rush. I had to be careful getting off the boat as I slipped a disk in my back a few months back so my DH got off first to help me. Walking away my DS commented that “we looked well old there, like the couple from Up” cheers son!

Rokchik2 · 25/07/2026 01:07

There I was in my black mid length faux leather coat and from the top of the staircase heard a sniggery "you look like Blade Runner" 🫤 and I had to look up Blade Runner 🙄

got myself a lovely Breton style red and white striped jumper. Got told I looked like where’s wally. By my 9 year old. It’s still in the cupboard. She’s going to be a fun teenager!!

Anarchy99 · 25/07/2026 04:51

Did none of these teens learn not to make personal comments when they were children?

Boys can be the same of course.....
It's the personality not the gender....

I think it's said in jest.....and love.....and some of the comments are extremely witty

JuliettaCaeser · 25/07/2026 07:16

I put an outfit on to the withering teen verdict “garden party”.

Thegirlwhowent · 25/07/2026 07:16

I don't have a daughter so I don't get any style or beauty advice. I'm mostly grateful for that! (My friend gets some useful tips from her DD and they sometimes get passed on to me. It's much easier to swallow that way.)

Witty? Okay then - I wonder how they would feel if they were on the receiving end?

If you have a good and loving relationship you take it as a joke. It's all about nuance

If they can take the same ‘withering put downs’ then I’m sure you are right.

Yes it has to be a 2 way street of course. My DDs don't actually do this with me, but I can see how some families could banter in this way and for it to be ok.

They’re jokes.

If you look at my previous contributions to this thread, you’ll see that these sorts of comments were (and are) very much a two-way street in my family. And all very affectionate.

If it’s all jolly banter, why are you keeping the outfit in the cupboard?

BuntyBeaufort · 25/07/2026 16:23

Dgs age 7 asked if I was going to change my trousers. I replied that I wasn’t planning on doing so and he just said “you should”. Brief and to the point, but I didn’t. Can’t let the little so and so get above himself.

A few weeks ago, over dinner, I told my three DC that I would be going into hospital for a hysterectomy and explained the surgeon would be taking my womb… Silence.. then DD16 said “oh, does that mean you’re going to be trans?”
Eh no… I won’t be trans….

CrazyMidget · 25/07/2026 17:13

Yeah, those culottes are horrible. And, Bagpuss? Honestly sounds like your dress sense could use some work. Sorry, OP!

Maybe some shops have a free personal shopping service?

Any attempt at a camel trenchcoat here gets a chorus of "Doobidoobidoo, Inspector Gadget"

I needed a new coat for school when I was about 13 or 14 and chose a tan coloured knee length coat with a waist tie. My best friend said I looked like inspector gadget and made me feel so self conscious that I didn't want to wear it again as I was so embarrassed. My mum wasn't happy with me refusing to wear it so I took it to school but never actually wore it 😕
