I leaned into the culottes and polka dot trend this season and was delighted with this bargain in Sainsburys last week. I thought I looked great. Effortless and summery chic etc etc. Until 14yo DD looked up at me with withering disdain and asked why was I dressed like a Tombliboo.

We had a similar situation last year when I bought a striped teeshirt and they called me Bagpuss for the whole summer.

Isn’t it great to have open, loving, funny relationships with our children rather than fear, abuse and silence.

Oh take a chill pill. It’s just a bit of fun. Some people need a sense of humour infusion.

Oh god this has just brought back a memory - late 70’s when an uncle arrived at a family party with a khaki style shirt and was called Che for the whole night.

Oh yes I feel this! My DD also 14 let’s me know daily that what I’m wearing looks terrible, dared to try a new hairstyle and thought I suited it, apparently I was trying to act too young for my age, oh and apparently my boobs are sagging… nice!

I bought a fluffy green jumper this spring and I thought it looked great - massively put off when my husband suggested it was giving Orville the duck vibes!

Slightly younger but when my DD was about 7 I was getting ready for a black tie dinner, wearing a black cocktail dress with lace trim. DD pipes up with "Mummy why are you dressed up as a witch?"😂

I was very fat and very hot. I went into Sahara and tried on a striped linen dress (I was channeling Judy Dench) the bff said 'ah the deck chair!'

It must be really dull to be part of a family where having a bit of family banter is seen as rude or poor form.

I, myself, have a love of boho style jackets and coats with a shag or wool trim and have come to expect the “oh look, mums come as a sheep again”.

Any attempt at a camel trenchcoat here gets a chorus of "Doobidoobidoo, Inspector Gadget"

Hopped on the butter yellow trend with some lovely wide leg trousers, worn to the pub garden last week with a black vest.

Enjoying our dinner sat outside when a couple of wasps start bothering us and DD (5) pipes up 'They think you're one of them!'

I have some lovely green and white vertical striped trousers.

On a really hot day instead of having all my hair piled on top of my head, I need a parting to lose heat from. So was rocking space buns around the house thinking I looked really cool - until DD8 told me i looked like a sheep...

I dont know, I appreciate the honesty, its not like my husband is going to tell me the truth. Plus it can go either way. A few weeks ago my 14 year old dd told me that my "fit" that day was "tea" and I took that as the highest of compliments considering I'm usually being told that whatever I'm wearing or want to buy is awful and I should immediately burn it 😄

It is. Up there with the thread on Twitter about Londoners getting comments on their clothes when going to smaller towns.

I bought what I thought was a lovely lace dress for a Christening last year. My Daughter took one look & said It looked like I was wearing a chintzy table cloth.

Sorry but that is hideous. Trends do not suit everyone. Unless you’re very slim, polka dots look ridiculous on most people especially the larger the dots.
