I leaned into the culottes and polka dot trend this season and was delighted with this bargain in Sainsburys last week. I thought I looked great. Effortless and summery chic etc etc. Until 14yo DD looked up at me with withering disdain and asked why was I dressed like a Tombliboo.

We had a similar situation last year when I bought a striped teeshirt and they called me Bagpuss for the whole summer.

Also on that thread, my favourite: The dark haired woman who had a perm done and someone said "Bloody hell, it's Colonel Gadaffi".

Hi all. Looking for some advice. My partner and I have been married for 13 years and have two preteen kids. We have a lot of fun together and all get on great. House chores are split and we hardly ever argue or fight, as well as sharing some of the same hobbies. Overall we are happy together except for complete lack of intimacy… it’s been two years now since we have been intimate and feel like it’s getting worse. I’ve tried talking about it but she doesn’t seem interested or says she’s just tired.

I keep myself fit by regularly running and going to the gym and try to make myself appealing but it falls on uninterested eyes. Not sure what else to do, I want to be intimate and would love some excitement but feel like the flame has gone out. Any advice or suggestions would be highly appreciated!

I was at school/young adult in the 1980s/90s and definitely don't remember being taught to respect any elder (well no more than anyone else). I'm laughing because you made that time sound like something from Victorian times and I know it wasn't.

My kids are adults now and they are lovely, funny people with a good sense of humour.

Got a lovely new skirt delivered, slightly more pattern than I would usually go for, DD has just come in and told me she’s remembered what it reminds her of - a Frazzle! Apparently I look (but do not smell) like a bacon crisp…

I asked my 21 yo daughter how I looked before going out on Friday, I had sand coloured culottes and a pink T-shirt and she said
“You look fine”

If it helps, when I was teaching secondary some years ago I wore a great, slim fitting burgundy suit in to school. Got compliments all day until one 14yo girl asked me why I was dressed like The Joker 💀

I was at my sisters wearing what I thought was a really stylish mustard yellow jumper and brown cords. My niece walked in and excitedly said “are you joining my Brownies?”

Re family humour. I’m a child of the 70s and definitely had it with my mum, and my dad to some extent.
We have it in spades here - I think it’s normal and healthy to have a bit of piss-taking and ribbing (same as with friends). dH’s family didn’t really have that - it’s something I noticed when I first met them. DH is nothing like his family.

I had a green puffa jacket that my DC called me a Brussels sprout everytime i wore it.
Now they are older teens, early twenties they are a bit kinder but give me an honest opinion if something suits me and tbf I do the same for them.
At weekend I did tell DD23 to take the lift rather than walk up the stairs as her skirt was so short she'd be flashing her knickers, so maybe we are as bad as each other!

I do, and I wasn’t disbelieving the OP - it was a genuine question and I’m delighted her kid has Bagpuss in her frame of reference. I just wasn’t aware that Bagpuss was a thing that gets marketed to today’s kids (as opposed to middle-aged people like me who want the nostalgia).

DD20 told me I dress like a Mormon (think she meant Amish though!) By that she means I don’t wear crop tops, short skirts and and revealing stuff (I’m 55!) I thought I was looking particularly nice the day she said that 😆
