Did you go to university in the 80s?

What did you drink?

Dh and I are trying to remember the drinks of our youth. (Neither of us were big drinkers, so we didn’t actually drink most of these!)

We remember:

Lager and Lime
Something and Blackcurrant - was that also lager, and did it have a name?
Something with Guinness in it.
Rum n Coke
Tequila Slammer, with salt and a wedge of lemon (or lime?)
Yayger Slammer (? I was not one of the Slammer crowd.)

We’re sure there were more, but we were too busy being squares 😆

I think the only thing I ever drank was the occasional lager and lime or rum n coke.

Snakebite and black/ Pernod and black
Blackcurrant to make things slightly
more palatable basically!!

studentmumagain · 19/07/2026 21:33

@VeneziaJ I remember in the early 1980s Berni Inns were selling coffees with cream floating on the top without the liqueur though. Very sweet to allow the cream to float.

DramaAlpaca · 19/07/2026 21:34

Cider and black was my usual tipple, by the pint.
If I wanted to feel posh, a bottle of the cheapest, sweet white wine I could get my classy mitts on. It was called Concorde, I think.
Occasionally a cocktail, a sweet pineappley one for choice.

Northern university circa 1982.

I have to say, my taste has got more sophisticated over the years!

Cider and black (currant) was popular, though I was strictly plain cider
Snakebite - lager and cider 🤢
tequila sunrise was also a thing
wine - hirondelle, liebraumilch, piat d’or, all completely disgusting, no wonder I stuck to cider!

aterriblefish · 19/07/2026 21:37

Gin/vodka/pernod with orange/lime/blackcurrant - where the fruit was always cordial not juice so strong and way too sweet 😬

Snakebite. Early 80s were the start of affordable supermarket wines.

I think 80s may have been peak student drinking decade.

dancingdeidre · 19/07/2026 21:37

Leibfruamilch
Asti spumante
Some terrible stuff made of whisky and white wine
All very cheap and I couldn't drink them now.
Oh, and lager and black(currant).

BestIsWest · 19/07/2026 21:38

81-84. Students Union had a special night on Wednesdays, 30p for whatever spirit it was on offer. Rum and Black, vodka and lime, Yugoslavian Laski Riesling. I met my best mate that night after her boyfriend asked me to go and rescue her from the toilets where she was being very ill and crying a lot. We bonded and she was my bridesmaid a few years later.

My drink was Pernod and Orange juice, a Tiger’s Tail.

When I worked in a pub in 85 the landlord wouldn’t let us sell snakebite.

FinallyHere · 19/07/2026 21:39

Pink gin
brandy and babycham

Or was that just me?

tequila sunrise
vodka and tomatoe juice

Minasama · 19/07/2026 21:40

Cider and black was snakebite I think?

eleanorwish · 19/07/2026 21:41

I remember the student bars used to do Merrydown cider promotions

Minasama · 19/07/2026 21:44

Babycham!! (I was at school still in the 80s). Southern Comfort & Coke, Tia Maria & Coke, gin & bitter lemon.
Woodpecker cider, Thunderbird.

90s at uni was Bacardi Breezers, Smirnoff Ice, Hooch, Two Dogs, WKD, Newky Brown Ale and Grolsch - remember that?!?

CeliaCanth · 19/07/2026 21:48

Mid-80s:
rum and coke
Malibu and pineapple
any form of wine
Pimm’s in the summer
pina colada or tequila sunrise on a half price cocktail night
snake bite for some men, others just had plain lager or bitter

JessyCarr · 19/07/2026 21:48

Oh, this takes me back.

Rum & black
Mezcal (complete with worm)
Tequila slammers (till we fell over)
Pimm’s & lemonade (ditto)
Lager & lime in the beer cellar for 50p/pint
Cointreau or sherry late at night in someone’s room

AngelinaFibres · 19/07/2026 21:49

GU24Mum · 19/07/2026 20:07

Is the second one a Snakebite and Black? Memories of uni bar make me think it might be!

We called it a purple nasty. It was 50p a pint ( lasted me all night).

JulesJules · 19/07/2026 21:50

Guinness
Newcastle Brown Ale ("Bottle of dog") - this was in Newcastle

Chucklebunnie · 19/07/2026 21:51

Peanutbutterandmarmalade64 · 19/07/2026 20:14

Black Witch cider, Pernod & blackcurrant
Snakebite usually with Merrydown Silver cider which was the most potent I think!
Lambrini

Red witch wasn’t it? That was my drink of choice, Liverpool 1988-1991!
cider, Pernod and blackcurrant.
oh I want one now!

Recklessismymiddlename · 19/07/2026 21:53

I think the stuff we drank was probably worse than the youth of today.

Callmecynical · 19/07/2026 21:54

I think we were entirely fuelled by:
lager and lime
vodka and lime
merrydown cider
peach schnapps
tequila
🤢
needless to say, I can’t stomach the thought of any of these now - and I have since discovered that champagne is quite nice!

WearyAuldWumman · 19/07/2026 21:57

In 1980, I was on a month course in Krasnodar. The drink of choice was Kuban'skaya vodka - quite rough.

Later, I spent the winter of '80-'81 in Moscow. The vodkas there were Moskovskaya and - sometimes - Stolichnaya. Also, we drank Georgian champagne.

Owly11 · 19/07/2026 22:06

Snakebite and black, southern comfort and lemonade, cider, Newkie brown, Guinness, vodka and lime, Bacardi and coke, old speckled hen, muscadet de sevre et Maine, cava, lager and lime, Pernod, Harvey wallbanger, tequila slammers, port, Bulgarian red wine.

MissDixieVoom · 19/07/2026 22:08

Guinness.
Newcastle Brown (the pop tops meant that you could buy several bottles and load up the pockets of your jacket so you didn't have to lose your place dancing on the tables at the Frog and Frigate).
Skol 1080 and Merrydown snakebite (it was lethal). Blackcurrant optional.
Cheap sherry / Thunderbird wine before you went out.
Vodka and lime.
Top shelf run - one of every spirit from the optic run in a pint glass.
Bacardi and tango.

We drank SO much.

Fernhurst · 19/07/2026 22:11

Snakebite and Pernod and black I remember

BergamotAndCoconut · 19/07/2026 22:14

I don’t think anyone has mentioned my usual Guinness and Black(currant) in all the and blacks
yes to merrydown too
and scrumpy as it was Bristol (@Madcats)
also Country Manor - very cheap Perry (pear cider)
and babycham too

Otley run. Leeds. Pint and a chaser. Every pub. Ending up in the union bar. I actually don’t know how I ended up standing. Or how I got home. I vaguely remember swinging on my doorstep. I remember drinking Bacardi and Coke one night and lining up the glasses. Apparently there were 22, how I didn’t need my stomach pumped I don’t know. I think they must have lied to me. 🤣

Oh yeah. .. I remember being so drunk I couldn't make it up the stairs to my room. I barely drink now but we really did put it away then. I even revised for exams with a bottle of scotch on the side of my desk in my room.

Wonderknicks · 19/07/2026 22:18

Frog and Frigate
I remember it well 😂
