What did you drink?

Dh and I are trying to remember the drinks of our youth. (Neither of us were big drinkers, so we didn’t actually drink most of these!)

We remember:

Lager and Lime
Something and Blackcurrant - was that also lager, and did it have a name?
Something with Guinness in it.
Rum n Coke
Tequila Slammer, with salt and a wedge of lemon (or lime?)
Yayger Slammer (? I was not one of the Slammer crowd.)

We’re sure there were more, but we were too busy being squares 😆

I think the only thing I ever drank was the occasional lager and lime or rum n coke.

Taboo and mirage

WearyAuldWumman · 19/07/2026 20:25

Cointreau, lime and lemonade.

The thought of it makes me feel sick now.

Caribbean coffee - coffee with Tia Maria and cream on top. I still have that occasionally.

Meceme · 19/07/2026 20:25

pints of lager
snakebite ( stella and diamond white or merrydown)
lots of vodka
or if feeling posh - taboo or mirage😂

Saucery · 19/07/2026 20:25

I used to make a punch with a bottle of Archers, a bottle of white wine, some lemonade, ice and cut up peaches floating in it. Well classy Grin

feellikeanalien · 19/07/2026 20:26

Cinzano and lemonade
Lots of cider
Don't remember drinking wine that much.
Party Sevens 😄I remember going to a party and a young farmer opening one of these with an axe!!

Meceme · 19/07/2026 20:26

If flush, Black Russian - vodka, tia maria and coke.

Snakebite definitely had blackcurrant in it. I didn’t drink it though.

i used to drink K cider. There was some alcoholic bitter lemony drink which had a name something to do with dogs….???

archers and lemonade

metz was nice.

Yaguer bombers? I didn’t drink that either.

Snakebite was 50/50 larger and cider, but commonly also mixed with a shot of blackcurrant cordial as “Snakebite & Black”.

I went to a polytechnic whose colours were green, white & red. We had a disgusting signature drink that was a half a pint of larger in a pint glass, then orange juice, blue Bols, a load of clear spirits, topped off with a glacee cherry. It was bright green, with a white frothy head and the red from the cherry.

I also smoked (when I could afford them) either Black Sobranie or Sobranie Cocktail cigarettes instead of my usual JPS.

Does anyone remember those? They had coloured papers and I thought they made me look more glamorous with a fag in my mouth

Edited

O yes, I hardly smoked but I loved the look of Sobranie Cocktails.

I drank gin and tonic, martini and lemonade, halves of dry cider, if we had friends round we sometimes had wine. If we thought we were being sophisticated we went out for cocktails and drank tequila sunrise and Pina colada. At a northern university in early 80s.

Ha! We would soak the fruit (oranges usually as they were cheap) in cheap vodka overnight. 🤢

And anyone remember vodka & orange jellies in the fridge at
parties? My friend made some for DS2's 18th & they all went wild for them!😀

BrickBiscuit · 19/07/2026 20:28

Blobs - white wine (eg Yugoslav Reisling), squeezed lemon, sugar, hot water. Northern delicacy.

GordanoServices · 19/07/2026 20:28

Oh yea cinzano and lemonade

marcopront · 19/07/2026 20:29

Cocktails at the Brandling
From what I remember it was in a train carriage and on a Friday night cocktails were 3 for a pound.

Lots of cider
A lot of drinks with added blackcurrant
Newcastle Brown Ale but only when already drunk so not a good idea

my friend came in and said I don’t like jelly, I said you’ll like these! Lethal 😁

Pernod and Black
Whiskey and Coke (45p at the PCL SU)

(edited to add, it was probably actually whisky (no e) as we used to also ask for scotch and coke)

Thunderbird - after extensive research it was the most ABV per pence!

I briefly lost the sight out of one eye at Glastonbury drinking a whole bottle of that stuff. Woah, it was rough!! Tasted vile too but was such a cheap way to get drunk. Wonder if it's still made?!

Recklessismymiddlename · 19/07/2026 20:39

Thunderbird god that stuff was vile but so cheap. Don’t think it even cost £1in 1985

CandidLurker · 19/07/2026 20:40

Almost exclusively pints of lager and lime.

still think it’s an ok drink.

Happyjoe · 19/07/2026 20:40

The guinness, I think was called black velvet. It was, as far as I remember, supposed to be mixed with champers. But being poor students, we'd mix it with cider.

Deffo snakebite and black, some pubs in the 90's banned selling it, thought it made people too aggressive, ha.

Drambuie slammers we would do, set fire to the drambuie, put your hand over the glass to put out the flame then drink it down in one go.

Lisanne55 · 19/07/2026 20:41

Lager & black
Diamond White
Thunderbird
Southern Comfort & lemonade

Oh yeah, pernod and black, the drink of every goth!

RedRosie · 19/07/2026 20:41

Off piste ... But I remember we drank a lot of sherry as it was very cheap (late 1980s). Quite disgusting and terrible headaches. 😂
