Are you friends with your husband?

I don't feel like I am. I try, however DH always says that he doesn't have much to talk about, and he doesn't really initiate time together; I get fed up of being the one to do so.
We get by OK, I just think it would better of we could have a bit more fun in our day to day lives, or even just an enjoyable chat.

I wanted to see whether this is usual really, or if I'm expecting more than I should. There is more to it than that, I just didn't want to type out a huge essay.
We've been together twenty years.

No. We are totally different now, I resent him immensely. He thinks everything is fine though.I did ask him to leave not so long ago, unfortunately he came back.
I hope you get what you want🌺

shoesandshipsandsealingwax · 15/07/2026 16:59

Yes, he's one of my best friends.

I'm sorry you feel sad. You don't have to stay if you don't want to Flowers

Washingforweeks · 15/07/2026 16:59

Me and my husband are best friends, we do everything together we don’t stop laughing. I’m 36 and we’ve only been married a year however. 20 years is a long time and maybe you need to start trying new things together, do you have Young children or are they older?

miffedatsea · 15/07/2026 17:00

Yes - he’s my best friend

AnneLovesGilbert · 15/07/2026 17:00

Yes. He’s the one person who knows almost everything about me and we talk about anything and everything, small stuff and big stuff, he’s the best listener I know.

You’re not expecting too much, I’m sorry things aren’t as you’d wish them to be 💐

Tell him to go again! You deserve to be happy.

Barethe · 15/07/2026 17:02

Yes, he's my best friend and the one person I can talk to about anything. We've been together for 27 years.

MarmaladeSandwich7 · 15/07/2026 17:05

We’ve been together 25 years, married for 24 & we are best mates too. He makes me roll around with laughter! Your situation sounds quite sad OP. What was it like when you first got together?

Edinvillian · 15/07/2026 17:06

Been together almost 30 years, we do briefly chat during the week but have different living rooms to watch tv as I can’t stand sport and some of the crap he watches. At the weekend we spend the whole evening together all three nights. We very rarely go out without each other but when we go to the pub, he’s usually with his mates and I’m with mine, checking in throughout the night. He’s probably one of my best friends after my sister and daughter.

JoWilkinsonsno1fan · 15/07/2026 17:06

Yes he is my best friend, we have lots of fun together and laugh loads! Been together 24 years.

Ooofbananas · 15/07/2026 17:09

We’re absolute besties but neither of us have many friends anymore in day to day life. I like him immensely, besides loving him, he’s just my person and I think I’m his.

I don’t think we’re entirely normal in that though.

ToadRage · 15/07/2026 17:17

Absolutely, I would be incredibly miserable if i didn't enjoy his company. We talk about each others days, our future plans, things we would like to do, places we'd like to go. We have been together 20 years and never run out of things to talk about.

PlutarchHeavensbee · 15/07/2026 17:25

Absolutely. He’s my best friend. We’ve been together for 38 years, weathered the hard times but come through it and closer than ever. There’s nobody’s company I love more. I still look forward to seeing him at the end of the working day and spending the evening together. We’re both due to retire soon and I’m really looking forward to it. Plan is to buy a motorhome and take off around the country. I know I’m lucky but it’s not always been easy to get to this point. We’ve been together since we were teenagers, he was 18 and me 20 when we got married with a baby on the way and times were tough for many years. But neither one of us has ever wanted anyone else.

WellConfusedandDazed · 15/07/2026 17:26

We get along ok and he makes me laugh but I often feel he talks at me and not with me. I rarely tell him how I’m feeling as I don’t need a lecture and I often find him incredibly tedious.

StrawberryMatchaLatte · 15/07/2026 17:31

Yes, he's my best friend.

mindutopia · 15/07/2026 17:31

I mean, it’s weird to call Dh my friend as he’s much more than that, but yes, he’s the person I’m closest to in the world and the one I’d go to to talk about anything important or if I was worried about anything. I can’t say we have loads of fun with 2 children and busy lives and I have multiple chronic illnesses, but we do enjoy being around each other.

Same for us, we can spend 24/7 together and never get bored annoyed, we are kindred spirits 😊

ImpatientlyWaitingForSummer · 15/07/2026 17:37

Yes for me, we have a beer together and watch the football, we enjoy doing things together like bowling, zip lining, rock climbing (less opportunity to do that now with two children), but he’ll be the first person I’ll tell if something’s happened - good, bad or funny - and he’s the same with me. He’s my favourite person in the world and I enjoy his company more than anybody else’s!

Summeristoolong · 15/07/2026 17:37

My DH is my best friend and we get on very well nearly 30 years on. However that doesn’t mean he can’t be an absolute irritating arse sometimes. He really can!! I probably am too! Men & women are different creatures which can make communicating hard sometimes but he’s definitely my best friend and always been there when I’ve needed him and I try to do the same for him.

Bigtrapeze · 15/07/2026 17:38

I am friends with DH and we have a really good laugh. He is the person I want to hang out with the most. I do also have lots of friends/acquaintances and people I spend time with away from him and do does he. We're not each other's only friend: neither of us want that. We also have lots of joint friends. We've been together 17 years I think. It really doesn't feel that long!

Couples seem to vary on this: some are mates as well, some turn into house mates and some are just married. I think it is easy to drift into house mate roles with young kids: you have to make some effort to resist it and spend time as a couple. Our youngest has hit mid teens and we now get more time just us two, which is fun. I don't think it is for everyone. I think some people look around their empty nest and don't have much to say to their spouse.

Did you get on better at the start? Do you like to do any of the same things? We don't do everything together and have separate interests but also like to do lots of the same stuff and that helps.

JoyousWriter · 15/07/2026 17:40

Not so much, since the divorce...

Gretala · 15/07/2026 17:41

Yes DH knows me better than anyone. I don't really have other friends. We've been together 18 years.

Yellowpapersun · 15/07/2026 17:41

Yes, truly best friends. We have such a laugh and enjoy a lot of the same things, but we have separate hobbies too. We've been together over 40 years and I think we have just been very lucky. I count my blessings.

Didimum · 15/07/2026 17:42

Yes, absolutely we are. I’d rather spend time with him than anyone else. I do have other friendships and a close to my sister too, but DH is no.1.

Loveinbloom · 15/07/2026 17:43

We were good friends before we became romantically involved. Still my best friend after 47 years together.
