Is anyone actually sunbathing in this weather?

When I was young it was my mission to get a tan on holiday or even in the back garden whenever the sun came out. I could lie out for hours with factor 4. Everyone seemed to do it!

I just sat in the garden for 5 minutes and it was unbearable so I have come back in to watch the tennis with the fan blasting.

I’m only twenty minutes drive from a beach but haven’t sat on the sand for years.

Do people still sunbathe or like to tan these days? Are you lying in your back garden in the heatwave?

I like a sunbathe now and then, when the weather is nice and I have the time. This weather is horrific though - it's SO horribly hot that I'm in the shade all the time or hiding indoors.

This weather has made me quite miserable tbh

Second week of a 4 week holiday not sunbathed once. It's 30°+ most days, nice breeze but too much for me to sunbathe (23-25° OK for me). Was very uncomfortable in UK before we left whereas here its bearable. Lovely breeze most days helps. Only bit of me to be tanned will be face, chest (not all of it 😉) and arms. Rest covered by long flowing cool dresses 😊

I've been sat in the sun on and off today with factor 50 on. I'm in the NE and it's been a lovely day - 24C and quite windy. Now sat in the shade with a cold vimto!

My DIL lies in the sun, I don't know how she can do it.

I've seen several neighbours lying in the sun wearing very little, and men walking about topless, craziness. Also up at this end of the country, the Miners Festival on Saturday - I've looked at the photos online and they make me hyperventilate looking at the crowds, and in this heat!

I like sitting out in the sun reading and listening to music. Got factor 30 on, parsole up. It’s not sun bathing it’s something I would do inside but can outside. As soon as I can I spend all the time I can outside.

spend many months hiding from the cold. I love my garden and outside so want to be in the fresh air as much as I can.

managingexpectations · Yesterday 18:03

I’m a sunbather. I make sure I don’t sit out in the hottest part of the day and wear high factor SPF.
i grab a book and sit for a few hours enjoys the peace

Actively sun-avoiding. Curtains and windows shut. Lying on my bed. Ably supported by a ruddy big fan.

No skin baking for me. I'm so fair skinned I'm tinged with blue hue.

I’m sitting in the back garden now after doing a bit of gardening. But it’s only about 23 or so in Dublin and we have a bit of a breeze which is nice. I have two health conditions that benefit from some vitD from the sun! I do have sun cream and a wide brimmed hat on though!

Bride2bbbbb · Yesterday 18:07

We are today - but only because it’s a lovely balmy 24/25 degrees with a nice breeze. It’s otherwise on other days had no breeze and been awfully humid. It’s the humidity that’s the issue

ObviouslyNamechangedforcleaner · Yesterday 18:09

I sunbathe most weekday afternoons if it’s between 24 and 29 - nothing else to do, I slap on factor 30 and read whatever I have from World of Books and sip on white wine from the ice bucket next to my zero gravity chair. I have brown knees and not much else.

It’s what I always swore I would do when I was sweating away in the city at a desk til 8pm and getting the tube home with my nose in an armpit.

i’m in the garden under an umbrella with factor 50 on because the breeze is more pleasant than my house.

Absolutely not. I don’t sunbathe now anymore. Factor 50 on the face, 30 on body and sit in the shade mostly

omghereistrouble · Yesterday 18:09

Never been a fan of sun only out in it if I had to. Getting over German Measles I was ushered outside to get some fresh air and I ended up getting sun stroke! I never ever want that again I thought I was dying

lmnabc · Yesterday 18:09

I only ever have my legs sticking out from under the umbrella. I do like brown legs but not the sun. Once the job is done, I sit in the shade. Never do I sunbathe the rest of me and just pick up a light tan from every day living

I'm looking at properties in Lerwick and Newfoundland.

I spent an hour in the sun on my balcony this morning before it got too hot, as I do quite often . Sunshine makes me feel good.

Itsalittlebitwarm · Yesterday 18:12

It used to be my mission to catch all rays but now I want ro hide inside with a fan and curtains closed!

Manth0914 · Yesterday 18:12

My 17 year old and most of her friends actively watch the uv index to sunbathe! I’m pasty so you’ll find me in the shade. But yes, the youngsters seem to still love it!

parlona · Yesterday 18:15

I'm 60+ now but when younger in my twenties for example, the whole reason for going abroad to Spain was to fry yourself on the beach. And if lucky Manuel or Carlos would chat you up. Then you'd have a lovely tan for the disco at night, get hammered and sleep all day by the pool or beach. Great days. Maybe that's what 20 somethings still do now, I dunno.

Anyway, I have spent the last few weeks absolutely dodging the sun. Blinds down during the day, no going out unless before 10 and after 8 or 9 (rare anyway). I watch for 7.30 pm when the sun goes over the fence at the back, then I can sit out in blissful shade at last. I always thought a SW facing back garden was the best, but not so sure now! But look, in Spring and Autumn, and sometimes in Winter too, it's a suntrap. Not now.

So no I don't sunbathe. I'm like Dracula, only come out at night now!

Papyrophile · Yesterday 18:15

No sunbathing. It is way too hot.

SpottyAlpaca · Yesterday 18:16

Of course not. Skin cancer is a real risk, quite apart from the damage sunburn does to your skin.

I’m doing the heatwaves the Aussie way : Slip, scalp, slop. Slip on a shirt, slap on a hat, slop on the sunscreen.

BountifulPantry · Yesterday 18:16

No I’m hiding indoors. Very pale and don’t fancy being fried! Too hot!

My neighbour sunbathes. I can't help noticing as can see directly into the part of her garden where she does it while I'm working. However, I haven't spotted her doing it during the recent heatwaves. She's about 70 so of that generation that did it when they were young. My two 20 something daughters don't do it in the garden. Simply too hot but I'm sure they do on pool holidays with friends.

I am in my 70's and my Mum always used to slather protection cream on us. Skin cancer wasn't a worry then but children getting burned was. I am an odd one. I never tan but i don't burn either. I have never sunbathed in my life but that wasn't being smart, there is no point if you will NEVER EVER go brown!

Scotland its rained for weeks. Summer Wednesday- Friday and todayb16 degrees foggy and drizzly rain 🙄🙄😳🥺

I'm in fife and we have had some great weather the past few weeks with the odd day of rain.

My friend loves sunbathing. We go away somewhere hot together every summer for a few days and she has to be in the sun as much as possible. I can't sit on the beach or sunbathe - I find it incredibly boring and too bloody hot. So I leave her on the beach for a few hours while I go and explore. My dad was the same - he loved to lie in the sun for hours - funnily enough they both have/had olive skin and tanned very easily. Thankfully DH and I are very much on the same page and love the heat as long as we keep moving/get regular breaks from it.
