Is anyone actually sunbathing in this weather?

When I was young it was my mission to get a tan on holiday or even in the back garden whenever the sun came out. I could lie out for hours with factor 4. Everyone seemed to do it!

I just sat in the garden for 5 minutes and it was unbearable so I have come back in to watch the tennis with the fan blasting.

I’m only twenty minutes drive from a beach but haven’t sat on the sand for years.

Do people still sunbathe or like to tan these days? Are you lying in your back garden in the heatwave?

I never thought I'd use factor 30 in the UK, but we did, applied it several times and it worked. Applied straw hat also, plus calf-length floppy shorts and a blouse with a collar and short sleeves so my face, neck & shoulders were covered too.

Having had both sunstroke and a 2nd-degree sun burn before (not at the same time thankfully, and my God, sunstroke makes you so ill), I'm pretty careful.

HoldMyWine · 11/07/2026 15:04

I like to sit with my face and shoulders in the shade and my legs in the sun. Factor 50 in my face, 30 everywhere else.

TheChaffinch · 11/07/2026 15:06

It's cooler inside my house than out so I'm not going outside much.
I love a beach holiday but I sit in the shade and wear factor 50.
We tend to go May or September when it's not so hot but I think that's when you get caught out, when it's warm and sunny with a breeze and you are out walking.

The sun lovers across the road have been sat out for a couple of hours every day.
They do like going to hot places for their holidays.

SideboobToYouToo · 11/07/2026 15:14

I would if we had sun, I live in Scotland so no.

BogRollBOGOF · 11/07/2026 15:58

I'm shade-bathing under the pergola and enjoying the breeze fluttering through the leaves and flowers after a week of sweltering in classrooms.

I don't want sunburn and the direct sun is too hot anyway.

I also don't want skin like shoe leather in a couple of decades.

mydogisthebest · 11/07/2026 16:12

No I have never sunbathed as I don't like the heat.

My neighbours though sit out whenever there is any sun, doesn't have to be that warm.

They got back from 2 weeks in Europe on Wednesday and Thursday and Friday were sitting in the garden, him in swimming trunks and her in a bikini. They are in their 50's.

She gets a decent tan but he never does. He is always bright red

BiddyPopthe2nd · 11/07/2026 16:23

No - I am working in the shed as it needs clearing out and worked on paperwork in the garden this morning but in the shade of the tree (before the sun moved around and the shade was gone).

Theresmagicwheretheflowersgrow · 11/07/2026 16:30

I have very fair Scottish skin, played out all summer as a child (no sun protection then) and sunbathed occasionally as a young adult wearing a bikini and Ambre Solaire. Now much older and was diagnosed with skin cancer last year so now I cover myself with factor 50 and stay in the shade or under an umbrella.

Obanotters · 11/07/2026 16:32

It is currently 15 c and cloudy so no…

Hatty65 · 11/07/2026 16:48

I'm the same, OP. I used to love being out in the sun. I can remember lying out as a teenager wearing Hawaiian Tropic and hoping to get as brown as possible. Saving up desperately to go abroad somewhere cheap and hot where I could lie on a beach.

Now I'm like Goldilocks. I really feel the cold, but I can't bear the heat either. I need to be 'just right' or I'm moaning about it.

I've felt really cross lately just hanging out the washing because it's too hot and I have to be outside for about 5 minutes. Also near a beach and haven't been anywhere near it for yonks.

badboss2020 · 11/07/2026 16:49

Only on the beach which is 5 mins away. There is a lovely breeze down there. Not at home it’s way too hot.

maddiemookins16mum · 11/07/2026 16:50

I do the odd 5 mins three or four times a day.

Glitchymn1 · 11/07/2026 16:51

I hate the heat UNLESS sunbathing with a cool pop in hand so yes I am. I prefer the sun to the heat inside my house. 🥵

WhiskerPatrol · 11/07/2026 17:22

Really surprised by this thread! I am naturally very fair, but in sunny weather I'm outside baking every chance I get. I love it. I don't burn if I wear a high SPF and build my tan gradually so that's what I do.

333isthemagicnumber · Yesterday 17:43

Not anymore. Been diagnosed with skin cancer on my nose and hate the sun now. It's the type that isn't dangerous and won't spread elsewhere... But the sunshine (at this time of year) really is not a pleasure anymore.

aWeeCornishPastie · Yesterday 17:44

Yes I do and loving it

BambinaCucina · Yesterday 17:44

I'm not a sunbathers anyway.

Even on holiday, I'll be under the umbrella with a book rather than lying full face in the sun.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · Yesterday 17:46

I did last week for a couple of days. 1 hour max in sun.

SpidersAreShitheads · Yesterday 17:50

I haven’t been overseas for around 20 years and probably never will again.

But I love the sun - blue skies make me feel so happy! I’ve been alternating between reading and crafting in the garden. My skin almost never burns and it takes me a while to get a tan, although I do go quite golden/dark if I’m outside enough

It’s beautiful today - warm sunshine but a blowy breeze that makes it feel comfortable. Perfect weather for me!

(The nights are a different matter though - I’m finding it impossible to sleep!)

Totemoneru · Yesterday 17:51

Absolutely not! I can't regulate my temperature properly so this heat is just awful. Sunbathing would feel like actual hell for me.

Me too. I love sunbathing and as long as I've got a podcast on and a cold drink of juice I can lay there on my lounger for hours! I love the warmth I feel in my bones and the tan of course. I use factor 30 and have olive skin naturally so touch wood never burned or felt sore. I've always been a sun worshiper. Our skin and internal functions do benefit from sun if done properly x

Sickdissapointed · Yesterday 17:54

Years ago I always had a tan. Spanish or sunbed but skin cancer stopped that.
now I can’t stand this heat. I run from air con house to air con car. Just collecting at school gate DGD. The heat makes me feel ill.
Longing for just warm weather not being baked so we can do things again rather than avoiding the outside.

celticprincess · Yesterday 17:54

I’ve never managed it as I burn or freckle. My neighbours came back off holiday during the last heatwave and the bloke was out every day. We are north east though so still not in low to mid 30s it’s not as hot as some have had it. My other neighbour seems to lie out when she can - she works early morning so is usually back and sunbathing just after lunch. I work from home and out and about so come and go and different times and have seen her out there a bit. Another friend on fb works night shift and has struggled sleeping during the day and has posted photos of sleeping out in the sun.

Today is 19, sunny and with a breeze and my garden does trap the sun a little bit so possibly a bit warmer but this is the maximum I could manage sitting out in. But I haven’t as I’m hooked on a few Netflix series.

ItsLOSELikeLostNotLOOSELikeBaggy · Yesterday 17:54

Currently on holiday. Lots of people tanning by the pool. DH included. I gave up trying to tan years ago. Shade for me.
Lots of people on the beach last night up until about 730pm when we went for an early dinner.
Lots of DCs friends seem to sunbed too 🤷🏻‍♀️
