Is anyone actually sunbathing in this weather?

When I was young it was my mission to get a tan on holiday or even in the back garden whenever the sun came out. I could lie out for hours with factor 4. Everyone seemed to do it!

I just sat in the garden for 5 minutes and it was unbearable so I have come back in to watch the tennis with the fan blasting.

I’m only twenty minutes drive from a beach but haven’t sat on the sand for years.

Do people still sunbathe or like to tan these days? Are you lying in your back garden in the heatwave?

Yes, DP and I have been out sunbathing in the garden every afternoon this week and all day yesterday too. We don’t have the luxury of a jacuzzi outside but we do have a paddling pool and garden hose to cool off!

My DH will sunbathe in the garden, he loves it! He does wear sunscreen but has skin that naturally tans (quite jealous of him really, I just burn and freckle)

I burn as I’m ginger, but I’ve always been very careful. A tanned skin is a damaged skin unfortunately.

Middleagedspreadisreal · Yesterday 18:23

I used to love it but it's too hot & have sun damaged skin so would be unwise to do it now

My son in law looks like he's been painted with creosote, any excuse to be outside and sunbathing. I got the washing in just now and soon beat a hasty retreat back indoors! My arms and face are tanned from walking the dogs but my legs look like they've been whitewashed.

MrSchubertWhiskers · Yesterday 18:25

In temperatures like this, I only sunbathe by a pool or the sea where I can take a dip. If it were 5 degrees lower I'd be outside getting a little colour.

familyissues12345 · Yesterday 18:31

Nah. A malignant melanoma diagnosis 9 years ago means I have to stay out of the sun, which is something I always did anyway. My consultant assumed I’d always been a sun worshipper (far from it!)

Muffinme · Yesterday 18:33

Our ndn’s been out in the sun this weekend, he’s as red as a lobster. In his sixties, he took his dog out for a walk and you could just see this beetroot red face walking up the road from our front garden. Personally I think it’s really stupid, it looks like 2nd degree burns. He seems unbothered

dayslikethese1 · Yesterday 18:34

I never sit out in the hottest part of the day. Many do though, I see them all traipsing back from the beach bright red like lobsters. It doesn't look appealing. I do like a swim though.

Isthisstillmymidlifecrisis · Yesterday 18:35

This sounds like Gransnet … so much moaning and peal clutching.
i LOVE the sun. If I had time, I’d be in my (tiny) garden all day long in the summer. But as ive a desk bound working from
home, I only can go out in the evening or before work. Generally go for a sea swim every morning before 9, then again in the evening. I’m as brown as a berry on my shoulders and lower legs - looks liken I’m wearing a white shortie wet suit when I’m naked ! But I would HATE to be in the city - concrete heat is quite uncomfortable

Mumtoabeast · Yesterday 18:36

I've been out in the garden all day, spf50 all over, read a book & got a pool to cool off in. I love the hot weather! There's far too many drizzly days in the UK, when the sun's out, so am I 😎

Sennelier1 · Yesterday 18:38

I do not sunbathe anymore, although I have done that in a previous life when I was still impervious to sunburn, premature aging, skincancer and heatstroke. I was born in 1958. Nowadays I still love being outside but prefer the shade, have several parasols at home and even at restaurants choose to sit inside or in the shade when outside.

SharkEatsDonkeyTails · Yesterday 18:38

Teen DDs have been tanning at every possible opportunity! I just try to get them to wear SPF

I still see lots of people use the tanning salons on the high street.

I think they think that sunbeds are safer because they are controlling how much exposure they get to the sunbeds. When I look at women my age (older) who tan a lot with the sun or sunbeds they don't realise how patchy and damaged their skin looks. I think they think any ' natural' tan looks good. Even with lots of moisturiser it looks dry. When we were younger 80s/90s tanning beds were really popular and a dark natural tan was in fashion. I can remember being in a dark pub and there was a woman who was so dark all you could see were her teeth and eyes. My friends and I were really jealous.😁

FFSItsTooHot · Yesterday 18:45

I've not actually seen anyone sunbathing but from the deep tans that I've seen quite a few people sporting over the last couple of days,I think there must be sunbathing going on! Me personally,I certainly couldn't tolerate sitting in the sun in this heat for even 5 minutes. Not that I'd want to anyway, being blonde haired and pale skinned. I have to wear factor 30 at least. I was desperate for a sit down in the high street a few days ago but every single bastarding seat in the shade was taken,so I had to sit in the full glare of the sun. After 5 minutes I couldn't take it any more and went into the nearby Costa's which had extremely efficient air con! After 20 minutes,I had goosebumps on my arms! From one extreme to another.

My 80 year old dad is. He also has skin cancer on his ear/face but will not listen to reason. Doesn’t use sun protection or wear a hat.

Dumbledore167 · Yesterday 18:47

I live in Scotland so yes, for the 17 minutes a year it reaches 20 - 24 degrees, we’re all outside. You will never hear us complaining about the heat, chance would be a fine thing. 😭

Purpl · Yesterday 18:48

Yes i still love if but has been even too hot for me over 28 doesnt work in this country woukd be fine in europe with a pool or beach think different humidity. My 70 year old neighbour does still too says brown skin better than white. I still agree. Too late for me a lifetime off sunbathing has caught up can see age spots and crepy skin. Ive earnt it i know. Rarely used suncream as chronically allergic but in recent years discovered suncare central and lancaster are ok.
my dad and uncle had skin cancer bits removed this year in 80s i i think im probably on borrowed time. If i was young again i would be more careful. To all the people who say they arent can honestly say when i holiday everyone is still sunbathing alll day. Have noticed no decline just less burnt prople

SomewhatMental · Yesterday 18:51

no not at all this year, I tried last year but only lasted 10 minutes, I’m on high dose SSRI anti depressants and suffer from dizzy spells caused by low blood pressure so even a few minutes in the sun just hanging the washing outside makes me feel like I’m gonna pass out. Before I went on a higher dose of antidepressants I used to be able to sunbathe maybe 20 minutes tops so I’ve never been one of those who can lie outside all day in the baking sun.

Alouest · 11/07/2026 13:43

I have a bit. But we have a pool in our back garden so it's easy to cool off. It's one of those above ground things and we put it in the loft in the winter. Best sixty quid I've ever spent!

Ooh which brand was it @Alouest ?

Mumtobabyhavoc · Yesterday 18:52

Nope. Not for 10 years. Using spf daily and staying covered or in shade. There's no safe tan.

Justgorgeous · Yesterday 18:54

Just ventured out at 6:30pm, nice breeze and just getting a bit of vitamin D with a cuppa and a glass of iced water.

Scotland its rained for weeks. Summer Wednesday- Friday and todayb16 degrees foggy and drizzly rain 🙄🙄😳🥺

Is that the full of Scotland or a particular area?

Alittlefrustrated · Yesterday 19:02

My DP, 62,who had a melanoma removed 15 years ago. No sunscreen.
It's a no from me - did far too much of that in my teens and twenties, and that worries me enough. I've also become every heat intolerant.

pigsDOfly · Yesterday 19:03

No never have never will. Hate sitting in the sun getting all hot and uncomfortable.

Even under a sunshade it's too hot for me.

I might sit on a garden chair reading once the evening has cooled down a bit.

PP said that a relation sits in the sun but is in her 70s so is the generation that sunbathed a lot. I'm 77 and as I said above, I've never sunbathed.

A friend of mine lives west of Glasgow and said it's been 25-27c most of the week, is she lying?
