Is anyone actually sunbathing in this weather?

When I was young it was my mission to get a tan on holiday or even in the back garden whenever the sun came out. I could lie out for hours with factor 4. Everyone seemed to do it!

I just sat in the garden for 5 minutes and it was unbearable so I have come back in to watch the tennis with the fan blasting.

I’m only twenty minutes drive from a beach but haven’t sat on the sand for years.

Do people still sunbathe or like to tan these days? Are you lying in your back garden in the heatwave?

ME!!!

I love sunbathing and getting a tan. I'm just back from abroad and although can't sit in the sun as much as when I was younger (and definitely not when it's 40°!) I was still out in it walking/lazing on the beach/in the pool.

The difference is these days I stick with factor 30 rather than starting with factor 6, then 4 then carrot oil! 😯

Where are you? I’m in the west and it was 22 today scorching! The only ‘cool’ day we had was yesterday. All last week was beautiful pretty much and it’s forecast for high 20’s again this week coming…. No rain in sight!

Never sunbathed but cycle 7-12 hours a week. Razor-sharp tanlines are something of a point of pride among cyclists. Even got them on my fingers from wearing fingerless mitts.

I’m in and out all day long, dogs, kids etc but don’t actively sunbathe

Blondeshavemorefun · Yesterday 19:55

Yes. Lie in sun with a book and suncream. Heaven

ElleintheWoods · Yesterday 19:59

I used to be quite a heavy sunbather/outdoorsy person. Not to a completely unhealthy scale, but just outside a lot of the day on skimpy clothing in the summer going on long hikes, sometimes by the pool, or beach if abroad.

Much less this year as I'm more conscious of skin aging, but it's cooler outside than inside, and lovely on a blanket in the garden reading. Just limiting time and covering face.

Feel a bit guilty not being outdoors when it's nice like that. If you are in a green area with low traffic (both car and human), it doesn't feel quite as hot.

This year for the first time in years I've decided to get a solid tan. I was on a sun holiday in March, committed to getting a tan and have been topping it up ever since. I look and feel fab. People keep commenting on how healthy, glowing, slim, young looking I am. Hilarious - it's genuinely just the tan.

We live in a seaside town, are short on cash this year so have been swimming in the sea and picnicing on the beach every day.

Yellowchair1 · Yesterday 20:05

I agree, I use to love tanning and actively sit outside in the sun until it happened. Now I only stay in the shade and obsessed with factor 50 on my face along with a cap and sunglasses! I can't believe how blase I used to be!

ThisSparklyHelper · Yesterday 20:24

I'm ashamed to admit I used to try and get a tan when I was young and usually just burnt, even on sun beds, how stupid. I try and avoid it as much as possible now and wear factor 50 if I am going to be out in it.

MrsJeanLuc · Yesterday 20:25

Absolutely not!

When I was young it was almost compulsory to sunbathe and the highest factor you could buy was 6! (I'm very old 😀). Which was very stressful for me as I have the sort of very fair skin that burns in minutes and never goes brown.

Nowadays I have a swimsuit that covers me from wrist to neck to knee - which has revolutionised going to the beach for me 😁

DramaAlpaca · Yesterday 20:25

I'm very pale and don't ever tan, plus I find sunbathing very boring and detest the feeling of sunscreen on my skin so I prefer to stay indoors.

notantordec · Yesterday 20:26

I’m just back from a week in turkey and I spent all day in the sun. I have been out sunbathing this weekend was well. I feel and look so much better with a tan

Gibstub · Yesterday 20:38

Couldn't agree more. Bad as smoking and as well as skin cancer, old leathery skin.

Scotland its rained for weeks. Summer Wednesday- Friday and todayb16 degrees foggy and drizzly rain 🙄🙄😳🥺

Which part? I was in the north east Thursday/Friday and back down to the Central Belt Saturday and today, it’s been roasting.

hay5689 · Yesterday 20:43

I’ve been in it at every opportunity. It reminds me of the summers I would spend in Cyprus visiting family, we spent the whole summer holidays there and it was hot! I have also succumbed to the TikTok trend and got myself a tanning pool, it makes a huge difference being in water. I generally feel I look a bit healthier with a tan but always wear sunscreen.

FriendInLimbo · Yesterday 20:52

Factor 50 and still sit in the sun but move to the shade when too hot these days. Born in the 80s, still tanned, not burnt - when I was a teen and went out with no sunscreen my mother berated me and I didn’t believe you could still tan in the shade. You can btw!

anniegun · Yesterday 20:56

I think the skin cancer risk and leathered bag look of some older sunworshippers has caused younger people to wise up.

meringuenests · Yesterday 20:56

Yes. Beach windy and nice

walkingmyway · Yesterday 21:04

Nope. Actively avoided the sun since I was a child
I burn in 5 minutes flat and get really unwell if I don’t seek shade

GlitteryRainbow · Yesterday 22:12

A good friend died of malignant melanoma in his early 40s. That put me off sunbathing. If I have to be in the sun I wear the highest factor suncream I can get, currently SPF 100 and a hat. I stick to the shade if I can or stay indoors.

JLou08 · Yesterday 22:21

I loved sunbathing and getting a tan, until I learned about the risks with skin cancer and premature aging.

Heyhelga · Yesterday 22:28

Most definitely not. I'm wearing long sleeves and sun hat during the last few weeks. I think around 25 degrees is my maximum sunbathing weather.

Robogob · Yesterday 23:02

Yes. Just one week a year, on holiday. I love getting a tan.

GotALionInMyPocket · Yesterday 23:17

I love sunbathing

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · Yesterday 23:19

Lived in Sydney Australia in the late Seventies. Lots of people used to sun bathe in these and higher temperatures. Very arrogant. would not take advice.

Even though, at the time Australia was the sun bathing, skin cancer capital of the world.

It took them years to catch on and cover up.
