Keir Starmer formally resigns

It is all a bit surreal.

DuncinToffee · 20/07/2026 11:43

In a statement, Buckingham Palace says: "Sir Keir Starmer MP had an audience of the King this morning and tendered his resignation as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury which His Majesty was graciously pleased to accept.

"Lady Starmer was also received by The King.”

BBC getting in a last bit of Starmer bashing before they start on Burnham, which will be the minute he starts to speak outside no10 I imagine

DuncinToffee · 20/07/2026 11:45

Andy Burnham, is the first Cambridge graduate to be PM since Stanley Baldwin. He will also be the first Labour PM to have previously been a Mayor since Attlee, and will be the eighth Labour leader to become PM.

Apparently a Burnham isn’t going to use the lectern. That seems a bit performative. But then I think that’s all he’s got 🤷‍♀️

cardibach · 20/07/2026 11:49

Are we switching threads now Starmer is gone? Or filling this one up regardless?

We will switch, it's taking too long to fill this one up.

And Fiona Bruce trNsissi9ns smoothly to attacking Burnham. He’s not even met the king yet. She’s said ‘Burnham not elected, but he has the support of the Labour Party for the moment’. Stress on the word moment. Shameless.
Edit: he’s as elected as any other PM

DuncinToffee · 20/07/2026 11:55

She also said something that the tourists outside BP don't know anything about politics

Rachel Maskell is Already Disappointed after the North Sea drilling news so it's not unreasonable to suggest there'll be the same grumblings and discontent.

I'm thinking by October with her and Clive Lewis

I’m reluctantly coming to the conclusion that Maskell is a shit stirrer.

He is. Wonder if he slept last night…

BIossomtoes · 20/07/2026 12:08

I imagine sitting waiting in the car was very nerve wracking.

DuncinToffee · 20/07/2026 12:11

Even more so for his wife, I imagine.

Especially difficult when the car door wouldn’t open the first couple of tries!

The uniformed woman tried it a couple of times before it gave. Security locks still on I imagine.

It happened with Starmer’s car too.

Andy Burnham is officially the UK’s 59th prime minister.

OP posts:
cardibach · 20/07/2026 12:22

BBC banging on about his ambition to be Pm as though it’s a bad thing. Why is it bad in a Labour politician but not a Tory one? Johnson was at it from his ‘King of the World’ school days

DuncinToffee · 20/07/2026 12:24

"His Majesty received in audience the Rt Hon Andrew Burnham MP and requested him to form a new Administration. The Rt Hon Andrew Burnham MP accepted The King’s offer and kissed hands upon his appointment as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury."

"Ms Marie-France van Heel was also received by His Majesty," the statement adds.
