Keir Starmer formally resigns

It is all a bit surreal.

In a statement, Buckingham Palace says: "Sir Keir Starmer MP had an audience of the King this morning and tendered his resignation as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury which His Majesty was graciously pleased to accept.

"Lady Starmer was also received by The King.”

BBC getting in a last bit of Starmer bashing before they start on Burnham, which will be the minute he starts to speak outside no10 I imagine

Andy Burnham, is the first Cambridge graduate to be PM since Stanley Baldwin. He will also be the first Labour PM to have previously been a Mayor since Attlee, and will be the eighth Labour leader to become PM.

Apparently a Burnham isn’t going to use the lectern. That seems a bit performative. But then I think that’s all he’s got 🤷‍♀️

And Fiona Bruce trNsissi9ns smoothly to attacking Burnham. He’s not even met the king yet. She’s said ‘Burnham not elected, but he has the support of the Labour Party for the moment’. Stress on the word moment. Shameless.

Rachel Maskell is Already Disappointed after the North Sea drilling news so it's not unreasonable to suggest there'll be the same grumblings and discontent.
