One of the last conversations I was able to have with my dad when he was dying was when I told him BJ had become PM. I'd spent weeks by his bed chatting away with very little reaction.
I tell him that, and he opened his eyes and said "How long have they had me out of it for?" Then for a few minutes he was his old fiesty self and I listened to his last rant about the Tories.
He'd have been loving this.

I think however many posts are left to fill up the thread, we start it at the end of Starmer's speech.

I saw that. It kind of broke my heart. How incredibly proud he’d be.

It's funny how "Who is the current PM ?" is a standard question to check awareness. I thought it was a joke, but recently saw it used in the wild (well a hospital, actually) along with "Do you know where you are, and do you know what day it is ?"

For the last year of her life my DM would not have responded, she probably would not have known anyone was there.

I also like that thread title.

I heard they stopped using that question when perfectly compos mentis patients said ' God knows'.

It was not clear from the post whether this was just routine Trump detachment from reality, or whether this was an intentional misrepresentation designed to give Trump the excuse for his first row with the new UK PM when he discovers that Burnham is not a fossil fuel fanatic

With Trump nominally entering the lame duck phase, and midterms in November set to curb his abilities, the best strategy is really to just ignore him. Much as I would like a Meloni style spat, it's not necessarily the British way.

The Spanish did well ignoring him and then he was grabbed by Infantino and led away.

Oh Ed Stourton‘s dead. I really enjoyed his stint on the Today programme. Only 68.

Yes, sad to see Timpson go as things appeared to have stabilised under his watch. Suggestions from elsewhere that the early release plans are to be scaled back - given the pressure on prison places & the failure to build more in prisons over the previous decade (whilst lengething sentences) that is concerning.

I always enjoyed listening to him. A great shame.

I was going to reply to the suggestion that it’s a bit of a desperate hope in my case, but you have to have hope. Im with Emily Dickinson: ‘Hope is the thing with feathers/That perches in the soul/ And sings the tune without the words/ And never stops at all’.

Excellent valedictory speech from Starmer. Good to see him walk away with dignity and a smile on his face. I suspect there might be a degree of relief in there.
