That's what our grass looks like @placemats , the weeds provide some green and fun for insects.

I have never managed to keep a hydrangea alive either next door had a beautiful one right by our back gate the landlord hacked it to pieces when they put a new fence in it never came back.

placemats · 19/07/2026 18:58

Climbing hydrangea is the only one I can keep. North East facing.

ETA taken in May.

Oh, all the best to your DS @pointythings ❤️

DuncinToffee · 19/07/2026 19:01

We have 2 hydrangeas, cuttings from MIL, and they are doing fine. I cut them back every year as they are in border next to our parking spaces but not much else. Maybe it's the car fumes.

Water and shade for hydrangeas @blossomtoes. That’s the only tip I have (I only know because despite being a gardening ignoramus I volunteer in a walled garden project and we put all the hydrangeas in the shady bit.

BestIsWest · 19/07/2026 19:10

Good luck to DS too @pointythings.

Efacsen · 19/07/2026 19:12

Edited

There was a climbing hydrangea on a north facing wall of our house when we moved in. It was up against a damp bit of wall and growing through the fascias and guttering so we had to take it down.

That’s my problem. Our garden is SW facing and fully enclosed with high walls and it’s like a Mediterranean micro climate when it’s hot. It’s very short of shade. Lavender and geraniums do well in it. My two variegated holly trees have died this year. 😢

Spotted Wood

I'm an idiot. It's a speckled wood, not spotted. Getting muddled up with orchids!

PickAChew · 19/07/2026 19:52

That's a very big day, @pointythings I hope everything goes smoothly 💐

Best ahh that’s why the neighbours one did so well the front is north facing, the back mostly full sun very little shade apart from the back fence where the ivy is keeping it upright, London clay soil which is as dry as a dust bowl at the moment amazed the roses are doing so well still.
