I'm going to Wetherspoons later to meet an old friend, we will be eating there, but I can't decide what to have.
What do you recommend?

Oh and the mini warm cookie dough with ice cream for dessert 😋

BeMellowAquaSquid · 08/07/2026 23:12

Chicken in a basket and spicy rice every single time although I do love their curry club menu!

Their Ramen noodle bowl is surprisingly good.

Agreed!

caringcarer · 09/07/2026 02:31

I like their breakfast.

Cheersminesalargeone · 09/07/2026 02:50

Pizza as it’s one of the things they cook fresh

PreachyPie · 09/07/2026 07:34

Thanks for the suggestions, definitely some recommendations to try in the future.
The fish and chips was surprisingly good! I've paid a lot more in other places and it wasn't as nice.
It was a lovely evening.

All day breakfast every time.

One suggestion I wouldn't be trying! I'm really not a fan of a fry up.

This is more like it! We just need some insulting references to old gents supping pints at 9am and we’re back on the MN track.

I'll add that one for you. I dropped in for a small breakfast, added black pudding and unlimited coffee (excellent value at about £6.50 so half the price of less food at Leon and comparable to McDonald's price wise).

It seemed OK quality and nicely cooked but I was surprised at the number of blokes in construction gear so likely on their way to work on a building site (this was in Manchester city centre which is construction central right now) having pints with their breakfasts.

Bertiebiscuit · 09/07/2026 07:55

I like the quorn katsu curry or cod and chips. Their rhubarb gin is pretty good, too

Ooh 3 small plates is too much is the new giant salad

Some of the combinations add up to more than 3000 calories, its loads of food, even for 2 people.

They weren’t old men and your observation is interesting, not insulting.

What we’re after is some class-based, snooty condemnation of lonely OAPs going for a morning pint, with added bogus concern for the drinkers’ health and the irresponsibility of Spoons.

And they aren’t particularly balanced or healthy- we did 3 plates when they started the Monday deal, and couldn’t eat it, despite thinking we chose well.

Yes, well said, this thread is sadly lacking in disdain for the eating habits of the lower orders. What's happening to mumsnet???

Anyway, I always go for the small pub classic (fish, chips, peas) with a pint of Doom Bar for £12. Hits the spot every time and nothing wasted.

We have a healthy sprinkling of ‘well worn’ men- I’m not going to say old because they probably aren’t. Just ravaged. The 8am pint while I was having a breakfast roll was less shocking than the empty next to it! It is quite sociable though, I’d say they are safer there than at home.
DH likes to time it carefully so he’s early enough for a breakfast, but late enough to justify a pint! About 11.45am, if I remember correctly.

ExquisitelyDressing · 09/07/2026 11:09

Our Spoons is always full of (presumably) retired older people during the day, it's a proper social hub. It's a nice mix of friends in groups, those on their own, I think unlike many other pubs women feel comfortable in there on their own.

Council house tapas.

Managing to insult many people with 3 words!

Iliketulips · 09/07/2026 12:20

I really like they're jacket potatoes.

Oh for heaven’s sake. Just two snobby and silly answers by the third page? What is happening to MN?

Come on, please, we need some posts about UPF, literal poison, animal welfare, child neglect and early death, all decorated with words like ‘disgusting’, ‘vile’, ‘awful’ and ‘Brexit’.

Standards of finger wagging are slipping badly on here.

Not snobby here - just not my thing.

I like that dogs are totally banned, but not keen on the food they serve.

I can’t stand the owner though…..🤬🤬🤬🤬

But, each to their own. 👍

@PrizedPickledPopcorn

what kind of stuff is on the menu for these small plates?

Loaded fries, halloumi fries, wings, chicken tenders… I think there’s a small pizza, which would have been ok but we chose one with an unpleasant curry dressing 🤣. Bad luck really. It just needs a salad option, or something that’s not deep fried!

Yes salad option deffo needed!!

HelenaWilson · 09/07/2026 13:43

You can order the small plates individually and have a salad as a side dish.
