I'm going to Wetherspoons later to meet an old friend, we will be eating there, but I can't decide what to have.
What do you recommend?

OP posts:

I like the wraps, halloumi or shawarma and you can add chips/salad. And some of the 3 small plate stuff. Fish and chips is decent enough as are the pizzas. I avoid the macaroni as it’s nasty packet microwave style.

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 08/07/2026 17:23

Fish and chips are also always good! But if you’re ordering close to the kitchen closing then it’s a real pain for staff because we have normally cleaned the fryer by then.

Rosesformygarden · 08/07/2026 17:25

Sticky Korean fried chicken bowl for me. With chips!! Though the rice is good too. We have a spoons over the road from my office.

Scaryspicer · 08/07/2026 17:25

Cant mess up a jacket potato

SpareVanKeys · 08/07/2026 17:25

I love their pizzas or the chickpea, spinach and sweet potato curry

Needmorelego · 08/07/2026 17:26

Scampi and Chips or Pepperoni pizza.

Their Ramen noodle bowl is surprisingly good.

I came on to recommend the ramen noodle bowl.

I went to a spoons for the first time recently, there isn't one near me. I was fed up with second rate expensive cafes serving boring sandwiches and crisps ( don't get me started on the idea of serving crisps with a meal).
I was super impressed. Yes I know it's only mass produced pub food but it was hot and tasty and cheap. The staff were lovely and the place was warm and comfortable.

ChapmanFarm · 08/07/2026 17:35

The Korean sticky rice bowl is nice.

Can't go wrong with a pizza either. I like the bbq chicken pizza

HauntingBillCrouse · 08/07/2026 17:42

I used to like their steaks, but they've stopped doing them now. And also mourning the loss of the burrito salad bowl, which I loved.
Jacket potatoes are OK, but I keep ordering one with cheese, then adding beans. But they give me beans, and add cheese. Fumin! That is not the correct order. Grin
Their burgers are pretty good, and the pizzas too. Curries are nice, but definitely microwave ones. As long as I'm not the one cooking I'm not bothered! Basically I'll eat any of it if it gets me out of having to cook dinner.

Careful, someone will be along to say they can't believe you're going to eat in a Spoons.

That isn't me, BTW. I like the boneless basket, jalfrezi or fish curry, burger etc

I only clicked into the thread to annoy myself as I thought this is what all the replies would be saying!

Mumsnet standards must be slipping 😂

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 08/07/2026 17:54

The fish and chips are good, or the all day breakfast/brunch.

Loubissou · 08/07/2026 17:58

What do you recommend?

I am here to tick the MN cliché box of saying I recommend going somewhere else.

I am a food snob and not ashamed to admit it. 🤣

feathermucker · 08/07/2026 18:00

The Spice Bag.

Definitely no illicit substances involved 😉

BiscuitsCheeseBiscuits · 08/07/2026 18:01

Me and DD always share the 3 plates then DH finishes them off. Although we usually go for breakfast. Just wish the government still allowed the unlimited hot chocolates (don't do tea or coffee)

I love a spoons.

whippersnapper55 · 08/07/2026 18:02

I had a gourmet jacket potato with bbq beef brisket and cheese, chipotle mayo and sliced red chillies the other day, it was lush!

This!

I eat at spoons far, far too often. But this is definitely worth having!

As in the bean chilli (vegetarian). Good on a jacket potato.

The pizza, if it’s a pizza one.

Steak is good.
Burgers are fine
Buttermilk chicken burger is really good if you like that sort of thing.
Breakfast is respectable. Order extra tomatoes.

If you normally eat reasonably healthily, you’ll need a side salad. There’s no garnish or veg with anything much anymore.

HelenaWilson · 08/07/2026 18:05

And they are often in interesting historic buildings, and the Ladies' loos are better than many more expensive places.

Plus town centre locations, so easy to get to.

Poppingby · 08/07/2026 18:05

I'm here to be a Mumsnet snob! I don't mind cheap reheated food I'm just not going to put a penny in Timmy Twatface's pocket. And I don't think anyone else should either but obviously I can't stop you so I'll just do a judgy Mumsnet post to satisfy the ones who only opened the thread to read them.

Any1ForTennis · 08/07/2026 18:06

At my local i would eat crisps....

No, no, no, no! Beans first and then grated cheese but please don’t melt the cheese ! So many places do it wrongly as per your preference.

As for Spoons, I like the pasta Alfredo (much nicer than bog standard mac’n’cheese; but my most frequent order is the Vegan breakfast - two veggie sausages, beans, 2 hash browns, tomato, mushroom and toast all for £2.99. I have it with proper butter though as I’m not actually vegan.

TirednessOnToast · 08/07/2026 18:19

Scaryspicer · 08/07/2026 17:25

Cant mess up a jacket potato

My local Spoons can 😖
OP, I'd have '3 plates for £10' & choose veggie pizza, nachos & loaded fries. Plus side salad. And a drink.

Teenagerantruns · 08/07/2026 18:23

The burgers on our one are always ok...or fish and chips, l miss the steak

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 08/07/2026 18:25

I usually go for the ham egg and chips.
I used to take my kids there when Burger King(their fast food of choice) got too expensive. Much bigger and nicer (according to them) than bk and they got big drinks. Its interesting, we go when visiting a relative in a North Eastern coastal town, in the day it seems to be more like a social centre, groups of older people meeting, families, women with young kids (not many people drinking). Its warm, its safe, food is reasonable. Yes Tim thingy is a twunt, but his business model works and it's saving lots of lovely old buildings.
