I'm going to Wetherspoons later to meet an old friend, we will be eating there, but I can't decide what to have.
What do you recommend?

The pizzas and curries are decent

CoastalCalm · 08/07/2026 19:47

Ham Egg and Chips

Oh for heaven’s sake. Just two snobby and silly answers by the third page? What is happening to MN?

Come on, please, we need some posts about UPF, literal poison, animal welfare, child neglect and early death, all decorated with words like ‘disgusting’, ‘vile’, ‘awful’ and ‘Brexit’.

Standards of finger wagging are slipping badly on here.

If it was on AIBU & titled "AIBU to have a pint with a Spoons breakfast?" there would be the usual predictable posters saying you must be a raging alcoholic & why would you even think of eating that greasy, reheated muck, just like there was a few months back

madaboutpurple · 08/07/2026 19:51

I like their fish and chips and their curries.

Ooh 3 small plates is too much is the new giant salad

BlondeFool · 08/07/2026 19:54

I love their chicken ramen soup. Actually tasty. With a bottle of wine.

If you like spicy food I’d really recommend the Spice Bag. You can have chips or coconut rice. Then there are 3 southern fried chicken strips chopped up and 5 chicken chunks. This is all covered with salt and chilli spice mix and red onions and sliced red chillis. You can add on curry sauce to for 99p. Absolutely delicious 😋

I second this, it’s lush

I’m a big eater, I ordered them expecting them to be child size. I was surprised at the size of the pizzas and bowl of chips. They really are bigger than you’d expect for the price.

HelenaWilson · 08/07/2026 20:16

Wine

They do a nice Shiraz.

Though some years ago in one Spoons I did have to stop one of the bar staff plunging our bottle of red into an ice bucket.

saminamama · 08/07/2026 21:27

Chicken tikka masala and a pint of poretti larger

Tommydoes · 08/07/2026 21:37

Best chicken wings that I've ever had with blue cheese sauce.
Pepperoni pizza is a hit, with chilli sauce though!

Former employee - avoid the chicken breast.
Burgers are okay but the old ones were better.
Pizzas can be okay depending on who’s on the pizza station - it can be night and day (I was a certified whiz tho, the trick is 30 seconds longer than it says on the SOP but don’t tell anyone).
Jacket potato is your safest bet, I had tuna or beans.
If they have the five bean chilli then get that with a jacket and some cheese - absolute banger and I was devastated when they took it off the menu in my pub.
Controversial opinion - I actually rate the chicken wings but I’m in the minority even among the staff. DH says they’re mining.

@GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf

Out of interest, what were the hygiene standards like in the Wetherspoons kitchen that you worked in?

I worked at a massive one in Glasgow and honestly they were good. Because it is a massive company we get a lot of audits. Secret shoppers, monthly bonuses ect. I’ve worked at some for cover shifts where it’s definitely not as clean, but out of the 10 I worked at while I was there (mostly cover shifts, my homes spoons was good) I would say 8 were clean. Other places I’ve worked (Greene king, independent pubs) spoons have been the most consistent on basics - such as not smoking in your uniform, stock rotation, no staff eating in the kitchen.

The fish and chips are always good.
the pizzas are good. And I like the new spice bag thing. Also the 3 small plates deal is a bargain

3 small plates for £15.

Council house tapas.

This is more like it! We just need some insulting references to old gents supping pints at 9am and we’re back on the MN track.

Exactly! Snobbery is rife on mumsnet

Scampi and chips and a large glass of Villa Maria!

Villa Maria Blush 🍷

So cheap considering it's actually quite pricey in the supermarkets!

ExquisitelyDressing · 08/07/2026 22:58

Scampi and chips. With a Hugo Spritz.

I know, I know, but it’s tasty, cheap, hot, served on nice blue and white plates by friendly staff, in a beautifully renovated building very conveniently located.

Pinkissmart · 08/07/2026 23:00

Breakfast!

Council house tapas.

Quite! Because everyone craves a Michelin meal when just having a catch up or just grabbing a bite when shopping in town.

Have a word with yourself. And please don’t use Council House as a derogatory term.

fromgothtoboss · 08/07/2026 23:07

I love the sticky Korean chicken with coconut rice bowl. The spice box with rice is also okay.

TheScreen · 08/07/2026 23:07

I like the jalfrezi with rice, naan, poppadoms. 👍
