Abnormally high FIT test

Thomastuchel · 08/07/2026 16:30

I have had bowel and digestive problems on and off for a few years. This weekend I was in a lot of pain and cramping after seeing a GP I had to do a FIT test and a Calprotectin test. Anyway I handled them in yesterday morning and my FIT has come back abnormal my level is 400.

I have to go back to the GP tomorrow and am on 2 week pathway.

I knew something wasn't right, I'm in a bit of a flap so any comforting advice, stories or help would be appreciated.

I would use a straw to try and bypass as many taste buds as possible. If you are having a juice chaser it must be clear juice. Good luck!

I have some white grape and peach juice that is clear, I've also bought lemonade as well.

I think this is exactly the issue, its all so individual so its hard to get advice. Do whatever you feel is best for you, if you are anxious then maybe take the sedation, if you worry about sedation then ask them if they can put on the canula then you can try without but have it if you change your mind.

But either way it should be all done by this time tomorrow.

I agree to do it a little earlier as mine took a while to work, I was even going on Google at I thought it hadnt worked and then it did.

My problem is I'm anxious about the sedation too! I'm already starting to feel like my heart is thumping out of my chest at the thought of starting to drink the prep.

If you are nervous about the sedation you can tell them that. You can always try without but have the canula in just in case you cant manage and need to change your mind.

But I would just focus on the prep, get that done and dont even think about the procedure yet

I've started the prep half an hour earlier than I was meant to. I can't sit here panicking about taking it so I've made a start. It doesn't taste as bad as I thought it would but it's not the nicest, it's ever so strong.

Well done for getting going. For me it was more the volume of it than the flavour.

Once it started working I made a little comfy nest of cushions on the bathroom floor, took the iPad in there and my beverages (!) and sat and binge watched some shows. Told DH and the kids to leave me be and actually almost enjoyed the excuse to do absolutely nothing for anyone else for a while without any interruptions 😂

Thomastuchel · 05/08/2026 17:47

I'm lucky we have two toilets. One of them is far too small to get settled in so I'm going to head upstairs to the bathroom shortly and try to get settled in.
I've set a timer to make sure I get it drink over the hour. I'm 20 mins in and I reckon I'm almost halfway down the glass. I've had plenty of white grape juice as well afterwards. The after taste is rank!

Once it starts do you get a break in between episodes or is it best to stay put?

In my experience, yes you get a break, just don't go far.

Thomastuchel · 05/08/2026 17:55

Thankyou 🫂
I'm 25 mins in and just over halfway down. I set a timer on my phone to keep an eye on how long i had

Thinking of you OP and want to thank you as well for such an open, honest thread. Health things can be scary and it's so important that we speak about them in a friendly, supportive environment. Sending a lot of love and good thoughts your way 🌻

Thomastuchel · 05/08/2026 18:20

I drank the first lot of prep in 45 minutes. I can already feel movement and the feeling that I'm going to be in the bathroom shortly.

I want this to be an open and honest thread because I've been worrying about this for weeks and now it's time I'm absolutely petrified. I'd like to be able to read it back and wonder what I was worrying over.

I hope this thread helps others if they ever come across it.

I commented at the beginning of the thread and have been thinking about you.

I look forward to hearing that it’s all ok, and that you can breathe a massive sigh of relief.

I second @Lemonfrost Thank you for an open, honest thread and for keeping in touch.

Thomastuchel · 05/08/2026 18:33

The talking out loud on here is helping my anxiety if I'm honest. I was dreading taking the prep but first one is done I'm just waiting for the action to happen! Stomach is gurgling and bubbling a lot. I started the prep just over an hour ago!

Hello, I posted yesterday about my FIT test. I'm following your thread and I can feel your worry and stress. I hope everything goes well for you tomorrow.

I had a FIT because after bloods 16 days ago, they said I'm mildly anaemic (had bloods as I'm so tired). Had a FIT and urine test the next day. The Dr seems preoccupied with my urine test - said it came back with blood but from the results I can see, red and white blood cells look normal. My urine and FIT test were done 15 days ago. GP has been waiting on another urine test result that I only did today because no-one actually asked/told me I had to do another. While I was sat here stressing about urine, kidneys and bladder for 2 weeks, yesterday afternoon I finally managed to log on to my app and saw my FIT was 22. It was tagged as 'borderline- no further action' but underneath it said REFER 2WW. I left a message requesting the GP call today and I've still heard nothing back. I'm so worried about the FIT test result as this one confirms blood and could explain the anaemia.

Elisabeth3468 · 05/08/2026 18:48

Hope all goes well OP. I've had colonoscopy and found drinking the prep with a straw helped and some squash in there too x

Thomastuchel · 05/08/2026 18:55

Well an hour and a half after starting the prep things are beginning to move! My stomach is making the most random noises.

underthehawthorntree · 05/08/2026 19:05

My DH has had two colonoscopy recently and he said you basically can't feel anything. So I would try not to worry about pain. It's just slightly awkward I think. Prep is the worst part he says.

Scampuss · 05/08/2026 19:19

Good luck @Thomastuchel

It'll all be done soon Flowers

My fit was 400 so try not to worry too much about yours but keep chasing them up!

The drink was awful and I got a headache half way though, although that's eased for now.

im genuinely worried about the procedure tomorrow but I need to have it done to see if there is anything going on in there.

Thomastuchel · 05/08/2026 20:45

So i spent a good hour sat on the toilet and dashing backward and forward it's now been 45 minutes and ive managed to sit in the lounge. I don't expect that is over with yet but it's eased.
The prep began to work 1 1/2 hours after starting to drink it.

OP posts:
KitsyWitsy · 05/08/2026 21:56

That will probably be mostly it for now, until tomorrow when you have the next lot.

Change2banon · 05/08/2026 22:05

Good luck tomorrow OP. Try not to think about the sedation. I found it fine, I didn’t feel drowsy, I didn’t even think it was working as I was very aware .. it was only afterwards that I thought, oh I don’t remember that bit, I didn't realise they did that etc .. so I was definitely sedated from discomfort but still aware of most things if that makes sense?

Scarydinosaurs · 05/08/2026 22:06

Good luck - I’ve had many of these and you’re over the worst 💪

Thomastuchel · 05/08/2026 22:24

I'm rested in bed now. Stomach is gurgling still but it don't feel like there's more to come at the minute. I'm hoping tomorrow's prep isn't too bad I'm not looking forward to drinking it first thing.
