Why was there so little public celebration after England's win?

I expected joy on the streets after England's win. But no?

They won a game. Granted they won it well. But if fans had been celebrating at 4am I’d have happily knocked them silly.

hahabahbag · 06/07/2026 22:26

They haven’t won yet! If they beat Norway then people will start to get a bit more excited

Ah the Vikings. Now that’s a team you can really get on board with.

MotherTuckinGenius · 06/07/2026 22:41

Because it wasn’t Scotland/Wales/Ireland dontcha know it’s against the law to be proud to be glad and enjoy yourself when an English team does well?

I agree Op. Can’t abide football but there was SOOOO much hype before the match. Endless debates about kids being off school, fuss over possible time changes and off course no one expected the win.
Then after a bit of a mention on spirts news theres not been a lot today .

You obviously live in a different England to me. It’s been everywhere!

@Jan24680 of course people care 🙄

OP it was the early hours of a working day. That’s why.

CheeseWisely · 06/07/2026 22:46

Because it was 4am? I’m bloody glad there was no joy on the streets. Fair play to those who stayed up and struggled through today for a mid-tournament match, and I thank them for being quiet about it. I’d rather have stapled my tits to a raging bull.

It’s a valid question when you look at the scenes from Norway - 100,000 people on the street and the Crown Prince out there doing the celebration with them.

Norway rank 31st in the world, haven’t qualified in 28 years, have never got beyond the last 16 before - and have just knocked out the most successful country in the competition’s history.

They’re enthusiastically celebrating reaching the quarter finals for the same reason Cape Verde and Curacao were elated to even qualify. England fans are not celebrating in the same way because it isn’t anywhere near the same level of achievement.

arethereanyleftatall · 06/07/2026 22:57

Because more people are aware that domestic violence against women increases by 20% when England play thanks to social media, so don’t want to be a part of celebrating that

ClearFruit · 06/07/2026 22:58

You obviously don't live near me.... Two teenage DS's 😆

nopiesleftinthisvehicle · 06/07/2026 23:03

Lots of England Bunting and flags in my street, so I assumed most of my neighbours were up celebrating.. Quietly.
I slept like a log through the whole thing 😴

PrincessOfPreschool · 06/07/2026 23:05

Because it was 4am? Lots of people were asleep. Those who weren't (around my way) were considerate and didn't shout or cheer. Then later, no one knew what time people might be up/ sleeping in so couldn't really do the hooting horns (usually happens on my road when match is afternoon or evening). The roads were very quiet even at 8.15am. When should people have started cheering/shouting? Whenever they caught up with the score, or whenever they woke up from going to sleep at 5am?

Secretseverywhere · 06/07/2026 23:19

People did celebrate but it was 4am. They are hardly going to throw them a parade for getting to quarter finals.

I did notice the they can they win articles starting up. I assume so the media can savage them when they don’t.

Hopefulsalmon · 06/07/2026 23:28

I didn't want to wake up the neighbours (cheered silently throughout) plus had to be up for work.

Dilemma999 · 06/07/2026 23:40

Er… it was 4am!

TitsWILLbetatted · 06/07/2026 23:43

Sooo much hype in advance, plus I've never seen football fans being considerate before.

Maybe if the win the final! It’s a working day and everyone was exhausted after staying up all night!

GoFigure235 · 07/07/2026 08:18

Plenty of joy here.

We were joyfully setting our alarms for 120 minutes later to get up for work.

DefiantRabbit9 · 07/07/2026 08:19

Because England haven't won since the 60's.

Iliketulips · 07/07/2026 08:23

I could ask, why wasn't everyone celebrating Arthur Fery's win last night. Answer because, not everyone is interested, they had to work or needed to do things.

EvieBB · 08/07/2026 15:48

Because not everyone likes bloody football 🙄

I don't care
.....and know lots of others who don't..
.... we're not all obsessed with it

I didn't stay up, I just assumed they'd be beaten by the altitude. Delighted to be proved wrong! I've been watching the highlights and people round my way have been talking about it since, epic match.
