Why was there so little public celebration after England's win?

I expected joy on the streets after England's win. But no?

Because by the time you woke up everyone was in bed with a hangover

Gazelda · 06/07/2026 21:25

There was plenty of public celebration round my way. Loads of people drunkenly celebrating on their way back from the pub at 5am.

tinyspiny · 06/07/2026 21:25

Because it was only 1 game and they have to win more before they actually win anything .

Because it wasn’t the Final and it was 4am and everyone wanted to get home to bed.

I am a fan of the footie and was chuffed with the win - and they played well, but it's ridiculous to say there should have been a big public celebration. They're in the top 8. They've not won!

Well given that the match ended at circa 4am on a Monday morning BST, what did you expect?

HollywoodStarr · 06/07/2026 21:28

It’s one game, at stupid o clock. They did what they get paid thousands to do. They haven’t split the atom.

Crispstoday · 06/07/2026 21:29

They won a match not the actual World Cup!!

piscofrisco · 06/07/2026 21:29

The pub opposite our house and those in it were very publicly celebrating

Justmuddlingalong · 06/07/2026 21:31

They've been celebrating their win for 60 years. It must be hard for the fans to move on.

thetruthshallsetyoufreebutfirstitwillpissyouoff · 06/07/2026 21:32

Because it was 4am and people were being considerate to their neighbours? The pub down the road from us were showing it and I didn't hear a peep when people left, which I was very grateful for (don't get me wrong, I'm glad we won but not enough to be woken up at that time!)

ShakyBake · 06/07/2026 21:32

It was spread all over every major news outlet this morning, bbc breakfast gave it extensive coverage as well as my local news station. The conversation at my work and gym today was mainly about this. Are you taking the piss?

LOL, great answer. 😆

DappledThings · 06/07/2026 21:33

If they win a semi-final I'd expect some celebration and obviously plenty if they win the whole thing. But this was one game, still pretty early in the process.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 06/07/2026 21:33

Are you out publicly celebrating Arthur Fery’s win this evening, OP? No? Why not?

Both British, both have achieved the same stage in a tournament so surely both deserve celebration 🤷🏻‍♀️ I mean, the footballers played for 90 minutes and Fery played for nearly four hours, but I don’t think we should think less of the footballers for that…

Backedoffhackedoff · 06/07/2026 21:33

Considering it was 4am there was loads of celebration. Spend 5 mins on TikTok watching the videos

Cla7 · 06/07/2026 21:34

It was 4am in the morning, bloody glad people managed to contain themselves at this time and didn’t wake up the entire neighbourhood.

HelpMeGetThrough · 06/07/2026 21:34

Because they haven’t won anything, so no need for “joy on the streets”.

Shinyhappyapple · 06/07/2026 21:34

Because it was 4 in the morning and people have to get up for work the next day would be the obvious answer.

Settlersa · 06/07/2026 21:35

They were probably in bed or going to work.

Settlersa · 06/07/2026 21:36

If they win there will be a big public celebration, there's a way to go yet

shhblackbag · 06/07/2026 21:37

Because it wasn't the the final, and it was at absolute stupid o'clock? All they won is the opportunity to play again at this point.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 06/07/2026 21:39

It was very quiet round our way, presumably lots of people taking the morning off. Some of us on the toddler am shift only found out at the baby group this morning, which was fun.

It was an appropriate level of cheerful fun. Isn't that enough?

TheFairyCaravan · 06/07/2026 21:41

They’ve got through to the quarter finals fgs. They’ve not won the whole thing.

OutOfApricots · 06/07/2026 21:41

What sort of public celebrating were you thinking of?
