I expected joy on the streets after England's win. But no?

Well there was a lot in London.

BillieWiper · 08/07/2026 16:41

Well I heard a bunch of people yelling out at around 5am. Other than that most people were decent enough to know loud celebrations going on from the middle of the night through to the next morning could be pretty exhausting!

Let’s review after Saturday.
People really want England to win.
I don’t know anyone who isn’t watching it.

cauliflowercheeseplease · 08/07/2026 22:40

Perhaps people have learned not to go mad in celebration too prematurely because England tend to peak early on ?

It’s hardly early on.
there are only 8 teams left.

Might as well enjoy each victory as it happens!

Radrover · 08/07/2026 22:50

I don’t like football so I don’t care.

And like I say, England fans are always premature to shout “ It’s coming home” everytime they win a match. Again, maybe this time they’ve learnt not to get too over confident:

But the point of this thread is that people aren’t celebrating so this doesn’t make sense?

i for one am glad. Fed up of seeing pissed up idiots clog up A&E, drink driving incidents increasing, fat hair belly’s on show with England tops hanging round necks and people who really don’t care about football normally all of a sudden think it’s time to be patriotic and wave a flag in your face. Not to mention the increase in DA incidents.

I mean it’s not like we’ve made it to the final of two major tournaments or anything is it?

tillyandmilly · 08/07/2026 23:52

What about Arthur Fery’s win at Wimbledon today ! Some of us don’t care for football !

Well we move in different circles as I know plenty of people who aren't watching (not just women, but men also).
Don't get me wrong - I would probably watch/dip in if we got to the final merely as it could be an historic event, but it just riles me that there is so much coverage for this sport (and so many assumptions that we all love it) and barely anything for other sporgs. Just don't get it.

Yes even people who are not regular fans are going to be watching on Saturday.
I work in a school, where the joy of pupils is infectious. A lot of them know every player in the tournament and it’s a great leveller for those from less affluent backgrounds. Everyone wants to be good enough to be in the school football teams!
My Father was coached at school by the Busby Babes and even though he was successful company director, never missed a MU game.
So I guess I was part of a football family.
Now I have a husband, who played at a professional level in his youth, but watches literally every sport going and still plays the game in his 60s. He was also a county cricket and rugby player, so Sport is in our blood.

He was amazing.
But there are loads of tennis tournaments every year, for those on the circuit.
The World Cup is one tournament every 4 years.

Gosh poor you! Where on earth do you live?
None of that round here…..

Londonmummy66 · 09/07/2026 21:25

Because the majority of people in this country really aren't that interested in football despite the wall to wall media coverage?

NeverLookInTheMirror · 09/07/2026 21:30

What exactly do people think they’re achieving by coming on to a thread with the sneering tones some have other than to make themselves look a bit stupid really.

So if you don’t like football it’s not hard to not post on a thread which makes it clear it’s about football.

While we all know that England haven’t made it to the final yet or won, the fact that they beat Mexico, and that this is the first time since 2013 that Mexico have been beaten at home absolutely is something to celebrate.

Unfortunately I think some of that was overshadowed by the cheating Americans, and I’m extatic that they were thrashed. They absolutely deserved to be, and based on the rules should have been eliminated from the tournament anyway the moment the orange twat got involved.

And Arthur Ferry is also worth celebrating. He came in on a wildcard and has made it as far as the semi finals. Bloody well done and good luck to him. I only hope that the public and the media don’t put unfair expectations on him going forward and build him up to knock him back down again..

Let’s see how many watch it on Saturday.
The last game was in the middle of the night, but it still had the highest viewings of the year.
Do you work from home in London?
My daughter works in The City and she said every bar is heaving and everyone seems to be watching it.

Oh and it was the BBCs highest EVER viewing for that time in the night…..

Great post.
on MN there is an air of superiority from those who say nobody is really into it. They are clueless. And they should be very grateful if the extra BILLIONs being generated in this country, from the football.

IdenticalHandTwin · 09/07/2026 21:35

I was mostly concerned about Jordan Henderson's broken arm 🤫

Londonmummy66 · 09/07/2026 21:36

Just because lots of people watch it doesn't mean that a majority are interested. I believe that the viewing figures for the last match were about 9m - that's about 12% of the population. Even if they double for the next match that still means that 3/4 of the population CBA.

I just dont get why everyone is meant to make a big fuss about some guys kicking a ball about a field for a bit. There are so many sports that aren't football that are more interesting but never get the airtime.

Exactly. 9 million people watching at 2 AM is far from the majority not giving a shit. Bearing in mind that those figures will be vastly less than the actual numbers based on the amount of people who will have watched in pubs, bars, clubs, round people’s houses etc.
