A nonce,perv dream come true.

but filming in public is legal so anyone with any camera can walk around filming

Don't let the facts get in the way of the hysteria Wink

Bristolandlazy · 04/07/2026 20:16

Kylie Jenner who is protective of her privacy, is advertising them. I've seen reels of people being hassled by someone wearing these. Some people will do anything for likes/views, I think the law will have to change. If not surely we'll end up with idiots doing anything for self promotion. Worrying times in many ways. Especially for young people.

Ihateboris · 04/07/2026 20:17

catslovehairties · 04/07/2026 20:09

There are tons of covert cameras out there already, though. Why the worry about these in particular?

You are just being obtuse now. The difference with the glasses is that they are secretly filming you. They're creepy as fuck.

So are all the body cameras that have been available for decades already.

The only difference is META has a lot of money behind it so more people are becoming aware of what is already out there.

You can get a recording camera in a biro for £25 on Amazon.

Penelope, I give up. Ok, there's absolutely nothing wrong with pretending to wear a pair of sunglasses, when they are in fact secretly perving. Nowt to see here. All pretty normal behavior.

i get what your main point is, but for every tech there is some that will be omg with it and some that will use it as its ment to be used,

otherwise why does society not ban the internet ?

that said do you have proof that anyone who has one will use it for bad intentions ?

I can’t think of a legitimate use for them

People with failing sight can use them to audio describe what they are 'looking' at

They're two decades old at this point. Obviously not in their current form, but this is hardly something that's only appeared recently.

Owly11 · 04/07/2026 20:26

Gosh there seem to be a lot of men on this thread trying to normalise this. I can think of lots of ways in which these could be used in a way that body cams, biros and phones can't be used but I am not going to share them here so some sex offenders can get their cheap thrills. Anything that becomes mainstream and easily available and makes committing sex crimes easier is not something to be blasé about.

With a big flashing light on the frame.

That can be covered up with a bit of tape or paint.

The whole "people who disagree with us must be pervy blokes" is a really boring argument that stops any useful discussion.

One of my daughter’s friends stumbled across a man she and my
daughter know on a TikTok video, who was secretly filmed by someone in a busy shopping area. Admittedly the man they know acted embarrassingly in it as he was provoked by the man secretly filming, but this is so unfair to him.

You can be concerned about whatever you like, but it's not logical to be panicking about Meta glasses when there are tons of other items out there that do the same thing, and have done for years now.

I panic about it all quite frankly.

They've come to my attention recently because of the BBC article about Barrymore and his using meta glasses to film people in shops and then posting said 'japes' on tiktok.

Incredibly, I think he's trying to make some sort of comeback.

But the point is that this is nothing new. This technology has been around for years now.

What they can do it match up the faces of random people in the street with other data and show you their name. But yes, nothing wrong with that at all.

https://www.wired.com/story/meta-smart-glasses-face-recognition-nametag-connections/

And someone could walk onto school grounds at pick up time and secretly record all the children and parents there without anyone noticing and put it all online, but that’s fine too.

Meta Silently Added Face-Recognition Code for Its Smart Glasses to Millions of Phones

Code reviewed by WIRED uncovered an unreleased face-recognition system embedded in Meta’s smart glasses platform. It’s designed to identify people via biometric data stored on users’ phones.

Anyahyacinth · 04/07/2026 20:32

I think they could be really useful for groups that a discriminated against..so catching interactions with police, other authority figures being inappropriate..their uses can be for good and bad...they can be safeguarding too

Comicsareback · 04/07/2026 20:32

This tech is different though… you can literally use your eyes and turn your head to control what you’re filming, presumably zoom in and search up details about someone online. That is VERY different and much more concerning than body cameras or biros with hidden cameras.

It gives the user a lot more control and opens up lots of opportunities and possibilities- some of which are very positive and potentially life changing (ie for partially sighted) and some negative and downright unethical or dangerous. They are a powerful innovation.

You can do that with photos you take anyway. Not as quickly, admittedly, but there's nothing stopping me photographing you in the street and putting the photo into Google to get more info about you.
