Ihateboris · 04/07/2026 19:31

Just came across these. Wtf? Glasses secretly recording people?? Why is something like this even invented?

yet in public there is no legal right to privacy and therefore no one needs signs,

Are you saying that a customer collecting their prescription drugs from Boots, perhaps having a consultation, has no right to privacy? Because, what - Boots is open to the public? So because anyone can walk into a Boots, the pharmacist is allowed to record my interactions with him/her and sell them to the pharmaceutical company/ post them online/ use it to bribe me….because “in public there is no legal right to privacy”? I’m not replying to you anymore because you’re talking bollocks.

I'm wondering how workplaces are dealing with these when employees are working with confidential data all day. Yes, rogue employees can use their phones to copy anything but these make it far easier to do this covertly.

Teachers, doctors, social workers? What would happen if people in those professions were wearing them?

What about people working in supermarkets filming people shopping? Yes it’s a public place and anyone can see you but I bet we’ve all bought something embarrassing before.

But, they are owned by Sainsbury’s and the data we presumably be kept safe. A random supermarket worker wearing these could be filming people shopping and sending it to who knows, or live streaming it.

fair points

People used to say they'd never have a smartphone. Before that, it was why would anyone want a home computer.
I suppose that when our phones become meta contact lenses (or implants, maybe, charged from our bodies) we at least won't lose them.

Or people working on national security issues or commercially sensitive contracts. There must be a workplace policy around there usage, surely. In the same way, civil servants working at home during Covid needed to not take work calls in rooms with smart speakers.

She could be recording your conversation.

Yeah... I don't know where she works of course but I think most work places would not be happy with that. You don't need to work for a super secret spy agency for employers to not want their employees to be recording meetings etc with a third party, unnaproved, and hidden filming/listening device. Unless she only wears them outside work

The whole things so stupid

You can still see the camera though. He turned them on to show me and I saw the light but even when they were off the camera is really obvious I knew straight off what they were and I’d never seen them in real life before.
He’s not recording in bedrooms and bathrooms not least because he doesn’t go up ladders but also because I know his family really well and he’s completely trustworthy and not a pervert!

If I didn't know him though, and saw he had a camera in his glasses I probably would think pervert. Or at least hold it in my mind as a possibility to the extent I don't think Id employ them to clean my windows. I live in a ground floor flat anyway, so my bedroom and bathroom and living are all ground floor. Not that I would be walking around starkers when the window cleaners there. But I really would not like the thought of someone potentially filming into my house. Even my living room/kitchen TBH.
And the question then goes, if he isn't a pervert why did he want the glasses. It is at the very least voyeuristic even if there's no intention to see anyone naked etc

And for him, as for everyone, most people he meets don't know him and his family very well. So they will be making judgements accordingly.

Xanadu78 · 04/07/2026 22:42

a very close family member of mine uses them as he is blind. They allow him so much independence.
I do think they have a use and people should not be so quick to condemn people who might need them to live a normal life.

in a company if people were fully honest there would be no need, but how many threads are there where collegue said x but then said different to management or manager said x in meeting then said they didnt say x,

My cousin has negligible eyesight. She uses them to help guide her as she has recently lost her guide dog & she's been building up her confidence in only having a cane again. They can also be used to read text to her.

Same as my family member. It makes me so sad to think of people judging him

So what then, you take your recording to the HR meeting? And they say "what do you mean you were recording the meeting we had about the vulnerable service user/confidential merger plans?"
Generally, if I want to cover myself at work I ask people to send me an email about the issue. Or send them and email summarising the points discussed. I am sure there are workplaces with such a low level of trust people might want to resort to secretly recording every interaction. But if it actually is at that stage then that workplace is toxic anyway. Being able to prove Deborah is the one who suggested X is frankly the least of your worries. And likely won't help since there's no reason for them to pay said recordings heed.

thats the tricky part is hr, unless its voice dictator machines then you could say you use them to transcribe the meeting , but then its a mix

PermanentlyExhaustedPigeonZZZ · 04/07/2026 23:18

My daughter is severely dyslexic - at 12 she has a reading age of 5-6. She is perfectly intelligent apart from this. If she could wear these glasses to help her seamlessly navigate reading when she's older, that would be incredible.

Most workplaces have the capability to record and transcribe meetings already. Even teams, while not perfect, can be used for this (even when all participants are in person). The idea that instead of doing that, someone would actively choose to record meetings on their glasses knowing the the video and audio recordings are accessible by Meta workers would be horrifying to anyone with an ounce of training within a company.
There might be good uses of the glasses. Other people have talked about their use by disabled people. But "so you can record everything in your workplace" is probably the fastest way to get fired in loads of jobs.

Lots of people with sight loss are trying them.

Ars they withdrawing free access to the features that help you like they're doing to people who are Deaf or hard of hearing? Typical profiteering to make the accessibility features premium when perving on women and children will be available as standard.

I can’t think of a legitimate use for them

I received a pair via a charity grant. Im visually impaired and they’ve been life changing. I’ve regained a level of independence I thought was impossible. I can’t thank the OT who recommended them and helped apply for the grant enough.

cupfinalchaos · 04/07/2026 23:36

Cruise ships have banned them. You can now film innocent people and use their image to do what you wish with AI. Yes should be illegal.

PinkPonyCIub · 04/07/2026 23:43

Ihateboris · 04/07/2026 20:17

You are just being obtuse now. The difference with the glasses is that they are secretly filming you. They're creepy as fuck.

Have you seen them? There are obvious lens in the glasses on either side. Not really covert

Only obvious when you are looking directly at them though. Nowhere near as obvious as someone holding up their phone.

Imagine a primary school at pick up time. A man is standing in the middle of the playground holding his phone up and filming the children. Someone will most likely say something to him.
Now imagine that he is just standing there looking around like he’s looking for his child. You are busy getting your children so you don’t look too closely. The cameras are obvious when you are stood close to someone but not when you are across the playground.

You can be concerned about whatever you like, but it's not logical to be panicking about Meta glasses when there are tons of other items out there that do the same thing, and have done for years now.

They may have been available “for years” but they are now becoming mainstream and are being advertised regularly on tv and in the media, they really are not the same as secret cameras in pens from Amazon. Covert filming should never be normalised and should be illegal, imagine being filmed in the changing rooms at your local pool or worse your little children, they are a pervert and pedophiles wet dream.

Not one person has condemned them for legitimate use such as the visually impaired if you bothered to read the thread.
