Do you remember when...

Humour me, I'm counting down the minutes until I can officially log off work for the day (don't worry, I'm SE so I'm not taking the biscuit!)

Let's play Do you remember when...

it can be about anything that pops up in your head!

So mine is -
Do you remember when it was hot and the back of your legs and thighs got stuck on hot plastic car seats (no air conditioning!) and how excruciating it was to peel them off when you had to get up 😳
I'm pretty ancient though so maybe won't get many Yeses!

Do you remember:

  1. Being able to stand up out of a seat without making some awful groaning noise?
  2. Being able to get dressed with ease, and without t-shirts getting rucked up all up your back?
  3. Having shoelaces that don't get mysteriously knotted every time I undo them?

Loving this thread, full of memories. Ironically, there seemed like there was more to watch on the 3 channels of my youth, now there are 200 channels of nothing to watch.

Oh, and I have a car with no air conditioning.

"57 channels and nothing on" - Springsteen 1992, well before we had such a thing here.

Do you remember when, we used to say: Sha la la la la la la la la la la ti da.

The Merkans have channels of adverts every 15 seconds 🤣

SliceofTosst · 26/06/2026 11:50

Lots of chalky dog poos on the pavements.

BeWarmKoala · 26/06/2026 11:52

I must be very old because I remember getting four blackjacks for a penny

Yes! No-one I have ever spoken to remembers them! I think they were 10p per min if you were in a phone box but not sure.

*Edited to say I thin you may have meant a shared line but this was one where you dialled a number and other people were able to talk. Like pen pals on the phone.

Edited

it was a shared line but it was called a party line. We shared it with a woman up the road. Sometimes we’d pick up the phone to make a call and she’d be on a call and we had to put the phone down (or listen!) and vice versa.

I don’t know anyone who had one 😆

Cantthinkofanewusernameffs · 26/06/2026 12:19

Did anyone else have a green grocer van come round the streets?
We used to get 2p to spend, which in those days could get a packet of Polos or a Sherbet Fountain.

BiggyJ · 26/06/2026 12:27

When gripe water had alcohol in.

That explains why I used to love the smell of gripe water 😂

I’d forgotten about those square cones!

Do you remember when you got rectangular shaped, wrapped blocks of ice cream and rectangular cones?
Kind of like a choc ice without the chocolate.

I used to get ice cream between 2 wafers - the ice cream shop made them in front of you ( in a contraption that they put a wafer at the bottom and pushed the ice cream into a mold and then it was pushed out?) so it wasn’t pre made at all

Exactly!
Made me laugh 😂

I bet the marketing people behind that slogan was so pleased with themselves for coming up with that too! 😆

When kids used to play outside in all kinds of weather and in the summer would have lovely tanned arms and legs.

Do you remember when we booked holidays based off a couple of photos and a vague description in a brochure? Before reviews were a thing.

Yes, and from adverts of a couple of lines in the back of the paper if it was a UK hotel.

BiggyJ · 26/06/2026 15:20

Has anyone ever booked a ceefax holiday?

I remember going to Brownies and having a little kit of emergency items, and one of them was a 20p to use in a pay phone.

I remember buying TSB savings stamps at school for 20p each, then once the booklet was full you’d take it to the bank.

I remember 20p was enough for an exciting treat at the VG shop.

Not sure why most of my memories are to do with 20ps!

I still remember the rhyme for the checklisy of items 'pencil, paper, piece of string, 10p piece and a safety pin' :-)

PluviophileinRaintown · 26/06/2026 20:41

Does anyone else remember Mercurochrome for mosquito bites?

And lying down in the back of the car (no back seat safety belts back then).

And going to the drive in and hooking a speaker onto the car window so that you could hear the movie.

And we had a mobile library.

There was a mobile library that came to our estate twice a week when we moved here. I think it only stopped in about 2006.

I remember when they put the first pelican crossing into our village, must been about 1985. The police came to tell us how to use it, and we had a mini one that we "used" to cross the hall floor for a couple of weeks.

I remember before sun cream was a thing, my gran had a bottle of factor 2 Hawaiian tropic oil that she used to rub on us baste us with
