Do you remember when...

Humour me, I'm counting down the minutes until I can officially log off work for the day (don't worry, I'm SE so I'm not taking the biscuit!)

Let's play Do you remember when...

it can be about anything that pops up in your head!

So mine is -
Do you remember when it was hot and the back of your legs and thighs got stuck on hot plastic car seats (no air conditioning!) and how excruciating it was to peel them off when you had to get up 😳
I'm pretty ancient though so maybe won't get many Yeses!

Does anyone remember the rag and bone man who came round with his horse and cart?

Yes! Our wore a black Donkey Jacket, as did every Bin man.
The Bin man would open your back gate himself, sling the metal bin over one shoulder, take it down the Kibble to the Wagon.. and bring it back again! Whistling all the way.
They don't make 'em like that now. 🥲

@BlackeyedSusan I can still remember an episode of ‘How we used to live’. A colonel- type chap went horse riding (hunting?), jumped a hedge, fell and got lockjaw.

Yes. Definitely remember this episode and still quite traumatised by this.

Yes! Jubblies! They were usually Orange but I think we did have a brief era when you could get strawberry ones. Lovely Jubbly - so that is probably what inspired Del Boy with his Lovely Jubbly (unless already real Cockney rhyming slang when Del Boy hit our screens).

Ooh Jubblies. They ended up as just a block of ice. 😅

How were there so many Golden Virginia tins?! We had them for word cards, string, craft things like sequins… also empty margarine tubs.

Who remember the pips on public phones and the smell of phone boxes?

Who remembers buying mojo chews and Anglo Bubbly bubblegum at the corner shop? Sometimes also Space Dust.

Did anyone else have a red Snoopy & Woodstock lì box with a chunky flask? Warm ham sandwich, Snaps or Walkers crisps, an apple and a Penguin or Club.

Who remembers raisin clubs and rum n raisin ice cream? Also - take home a Gino Ginelli…

Did anyone ever watch Albion Market? I wanted to be a scriptwriter!

So funny you saying about the lunchbox with the chunky flask. My cousin who is in his 40's now had one as a child and still has it now. My toddler uses it to put cars in 😂

Do you remember when you could press the play and record buttons on a radio cassette player to record songs off the radio?

MadisonAvenue · 28/06/2026 10:24

AndSoFinally · 27/06/2026 17:35

Do you remember the free records that used to come taped to the front of magazines? They were made of floppy plastic, like thick cellophane, you could see through them if you held them up to the light. Usually kids songs or stories. We found a Care Bears one in the back of an old encyclopedia not long back but had no record player to try it on.

(Also, remember encyclopedias??)

Flexi discs. I think I still have a Duran Duran one from the early 80s.

And would get very cross when a DJ talked over the intro or cut in to go to the news or an ad break before the end!

Steve Wright used to do this intentionally.

Themed cards in Brooke Bond PG tips tea, explorers, flowers, birds, etc, one could get an album to put them in. The back of the card would have some brief explanation. I still have a lot and put them in a frame.

cheapskatemum · 28/06/2026 13:19

@Killdeerwhen I hear certain songs I expect to hear the DJ talking at the end, as I listened to my taped version so often back in the day. Dr Hook’s “A Little Bit More” is one of them.

BiggyJ · 28/06/2026 13:45

Do you remember when the Forever Friends bears were everywhere!

Kinky Dan bubble gum with stickers. Block mascara. The wool shop. Smoking upstairs on the bus. Jumping off the Routemaster before the stop. Charity boxes outside shops. (The little boy in callipers). 19 and a half pence for 10 number 6.

My cousin got done for nicking one of those types of charity boxes sure it was a bear
He was never not going to be caught walking up main shopping street in city with a three foot bear under his arm.early 80s.

My brother’s scout group did a fun day and goldfish were prizes at that. And that’s the story of how we got four goldfish. 🙈

Blackcatahotcat · 28/06/2026 21:44

And spider monkeys dressed in little knitted clothes. You could hold them for photos.

I wonder why we both remember this episode, and was scarred by it.

I remember before sun cream was a thing, my gran had a bottle of factor 2 Hawaiian tropic oil that she used to rub on us baste us with

I was only taking to some twenty year olds last week about sun tan lotion, and that when I was a teenager, we thought factor four was strong. it stopped you getting a tan and was thick, like yoghurt.

Rainingcatsandog · 28/06/2026 21:55

Do you remember when jeans were all too long and you used to have to take them up? Also putting them in a cold bath to shrink them?

Silverbirchleaf · 28/06/2026 21:56

Do you remember ‘ Watch out, watch out, there’s a Humphrey about!’?

Never did the bath thing myself, but I do remember that.

I remember having a skintight pair of Levi’s. My brother had to help me zip them up, whilst I lay on the floor. He also had to help me up, but boy did I feel good in those jeans!
