Do you remember when...

Humour me, I'm counting down the minutes until I can officially log off work for the day (don't worry, I'm SE so I'm not taking the biscuit!)

Let's play Do you remember when...

it can be about anything that pops up in your head!

So mine is -
Do you remember when it was hot and the back of your legs and thighs got stuck on hot plastic car seats (no air conditioning!) and how excruciating it was to peel them off when you had to get up 😳
I'm pretty ancient though so maybe won't get many Yeses!

Sounds rather like sitting on my leather sofa today unless I put a blanket down!

Sit on a pet cooling mat, the bliss.

Do you remember getting 10p a week for pocket money, and spending absolutely ages choosing the sweets which would make up your 10p mix, black jacks and fruit salads were half a pence each 😁

Yes I remember this! Those were the days! Used to love Sunday's when dad would get the paper and we could come along to the shop to pick a 10p mix.

mondaytosunday · 25/06/2026 19:31

@Cantthinkofanewusernameffsyes! Neapolitan flavour! Oh my…

MassOfInterstellarGas · 25/06/2026 19:32

I remember going to Brownies and having a little kit of emergency items, and one of them was a 20p to use in a pay phone.

I remember buying TSB savings stamps at school for 20p each, then once the booklet was full you’d take it to the bank.

I remember 20p was enough for an exciting treat at the VG shop.

Not sure why most of my memories are to do with 20ps!

Fatiguedwithlife · 25/06/2026 19:33

I remember the little plastic covers that went in the holes where the headrests should have been. I remember sticking to car seats and also the waffle print it left out with on the back of your legs. Also yes to sitting on the carpet hump and leaning through the middle of the front seats to get a good view

I have one in my bed to rest my hot feet on!

Do you remember when the TV programmes used to end at 11pm ish, and the screen faded away to black with a little white dot on the middle.

Do you remember when they used to play the National Anthem at the tv closedown at night and in the cinema at the end of the film?

MadisonAvenue · 25/06/2026 19:38

Standing in a queue at the phone box and your heart dropping when you saw the person using the phone put yet another coin in the slot.

Do you remember when you had to deal with not only the plastic seats, and no air con, but also your parent smoking whilst they were driving, and the fag ash that would often blow into the back seat.

I had to hold my dad’s lit cigarette as he parallel parked 🙄

LeftBoobGoneRogue · 25/06/2026 19:39

Who remembers when you could you use 2p and 5pm coins in a pay phone c1981?

Sheismycherrypie · 25/06/2026 19:42

It’s funny because I’m only in my mid 30s yet some of the stuff from my childhood seems very distant now - being smacked, smoking in pubs and cars (the adults, not me!) going out for the day at age 12 or 13 with no mobile phone and just £5, programmes like Fat Families and Blind Date where shaming was the game and everyone laughed 😬

Also - Vienetta Whirl, Angels Delight and those Maxwell House coffee sachets which I thought were luxury

I used to go out for the day, on my bike, with a 2p in my shoe, for the pay phone.

I just use to reverse the charge.

Raking for ale bottles to cash in for sweets(pop bottles) in Rest of uk.

The red rings round your legs in the winter because of your wellies rubbing your legs.

Mum spitting on a tissue to wipe a mucky face🤮I hated that.
The bone comb..bloody torture

The belt or tawse.

Crisps ..2p
Loads of sweets for 10p..face pressed up against glass cabinet choosing.

A clothes peg for the choke. To keep it out.

“black jacks and fruit salads were half a pence each 😁”

You were robbed - they used to be four for a penny! Traffic light lollies were 3d and big gobstoppers were 2d. This was in the sixties. I used to get 1/6d pocket money, so I’m very good at counting in one and a halfs. We had a phone, but it was on a party line, so if the other people were using it, you had to wait until they’d finished.

Do you remember going on a school trip (Three Counties Show in Malvern in my case!) and taking a Tupperware beaker full of orange squash with you: it had a lid that you just popped on, so if it hadn’t spilled all over your packed lunch by the time you got there, it was warm and tasted of plastic?

I can still smell and taste it now!

Oh that plastic taste combined with warm diluted juice..🤮

The coal man filling the hopper for the boiler your parents were so proud of because you finally had central heating.

The squash back then was vile and it always left an orange ring on the cup and yes to Tupperware, my dm was a rep and the cupboards were full of it!

Yes
and I'll raise you

Do you remember when there were only 2 television channels ?

tobee · 25/06/2026 19:58

My parents used to have 1970s leather armchairs and you’d get stuck to them at home as well as dealing with car seats.

Do you remember having to entertain yourself in your own head if you didn’t have a reading book or a colouring book on long car journeys?

Do you remember going out to play unsupervised in the summer holidays and being out all day?

Do you remember tv programmes starting at 11 a.m and showing Play School and then shutting down until 4pm? Do you remember the last children’s programme being on and finishing for the 5.40 news?

Do you remember getting whip lash from your flared jeans when the ends got wet?

No.

Do you remember only having black and white tv (thought Orville was a hideous colour when I first saw him in colour)?
