Do you remember when...

Humour me, I'm counting down the minutes until I can officially log off work for the day (don't worry, I'm SE so I'm not taking the biscuit!)

Let's play Do you remember when...

it can be about anything that pops up in your head!

So mine is -
Do you remember when it was hot and the back of your legs and thighs got stuck on hot plastic car seats (no air conditioning!) and how excruciating it was to peel them off when you had to get up 😳
I'm pretty ancient though so maybe won't get many Yeses!

Do you remember going on a school trip (Three Counties Show in Malvern in my case!) and taking a Tupperware beaker full of orange squash with you: it had a lid that you just popped on, so if it hadn’t spilled all over your packed lunch by the time you got there, it was warm and tasted of plastic?

I can still smell and taste it now!

I bought some of those pastel coloured beakers in a charity shop a couple of years ago. So evocative.

Silverbirchleaf · 25/06/2026 22:05

@Waitingfordoggo I think some of those were your family’s rules, but we only had food in front of the tv on special occasions. Also, we had breakfast, dinner (ie main meal at lunch) and tea, and our tea was similar to yours - bread, jams, cheese, shipman paste, followed by cake.

Sherbet Fountains and Sherbet Dib Dabs were the best sweets

You can still get those now!
Little corner shops do them.

Hot Ribena at school!

My mum used to give me hot ribena when I felt sick, to help me throw up!

Ooh - better than my Mum! She gave me Arrowroot mixed in water, or Kaolin and Morphine.
Both absolutely disgusting!

Waitingfordoggo · 25/06/2026 22:12

Yes @Silverbirchleaf! Dinner was a hot meal in the middle of the day (whether at school or at home) and tea was the evening meal. I miss that!

Do you remember your friend or family members phone repeatedly giving an engaged tone, so you became concerned that they 'left the phone off the hook!'. This was very bad news because they were being charged for a call continuously. A neighbour or family member would go to the house ASAP and knock on the door to tell them

shellyleppard · 25/06/2026 22:14

@BiggyJ i remember the car seats where your legs stuck to the plastic. I also remember being able to sleep on the back seat of the family car 😀

Dontlletmedownbruce · 25/06/2026 22:17

Do you remember a drink called Umbongo with the catchy tune 'Umbongo Umbongo they drink it in the Congo..'

Yes, it was Bad News and hopefully your parents never found out!

Sorry if it’s already been mentioned but the great joy and excitement that was… THE APPARATUS in school PE. We didn’t get to use it much so when we did it was VERY exciting. The most exciting bit was setting it up- pulling the big piece away from the wall and putting the brake down into the hall floor. And then you got to climb all over it in your vest and pants.

Why did school hall floors smell so rank though? Maybe varnish?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 25/06/2026 22:19

I can remember (just) going to the sweet shop and getting 4 ‘chews’ for one old penny - a farthing each.

Also ‘just’ (I was very small) the milkman coming with a horse - which dds found utterly hilarious when I first told them.

And Listen With Mother (BBC radio, or ‘wireless’ then) after lunch at home, before I started school at 5 and a half, no nursery or pre school. ‘Are you sitting comfortably? Then I’ll begin…’.

Lucky there was no such thing as Health and Safety in those days

Do you remember when you had to start using area codes to dial local numbers ?

When I was about 7, I fell off the school aparatus onto my head on the wooden floor, and had to go to A&E for stitches. It was a little triangular thing and I think I only fell about 2 feet. 😂

Before the internet, looking up holiday deals on Ceefax

Mayismymonth · 25/06/2026 22:30

Do you remember having a spoonful of Delrosa every day? I’m loving this thread :)

Do you remember when you answered your phone by saying your phone number, like village ###?

Yes. My aunt's phone number was 4 digits long within her village. We were in a nearby town so added a two digit village code.

I remember going to Brownies and having a little kit of emergency items, and one of them was a 20p to use in a pay phone.

I remember buying TSB savings stamps at school for 20p each, then once the booklet was full you’d take it to the bank.

I remember 20p was enough for an exciting treat at the VG shop.

Not sure why most of my memories are to do with 20ps!

It was tuppence for the phonebox back in my day!

Silverbirchleaf · 25/06/2026 22:36

Do you remember when Lucozade came in crinkly paper, and you only had the original
flavour?

And Crunchies had orange wrappers?

(and mn didn’t have an edit function!)

Yes, we all carried a two pence piece with us.

@Silverbirchleaf as a kid you knew you were ill when that got cracked open.
Blanket on the settee,comic,kids TV.
Memories of a 70s kid.

A spoonful of that awful thick cough mixture that came in a brown bottle when you had a cold or a sore throat. Vile stuff!

Feelblue · 25/06/2026 22:43

Do you remember when snooker was massive and the games lasted ages?. Being allowed to stay up late on a school night for final, but not mattering because all the teachers had done the same and just as bleary eyed.

Yes, it was a national obsession in the 1980s.
