Do you remember when...

Humour me, I'm counting down the minutes until I can officially log off work for the day (don't worry, I'm SE so I'm not taking the biscuit!)

Let's play Do you remember when...

it can be about anything that pops up in your head!

So mine is -
Do you remember when it was hot and the back of your legs and thighs got stuck on hot plastic car seats (no air conditioning!) and how excruciating it was to peel them off when you had to get up 😳
I'm pretty ancient though so maybe won't get many Yeses!

@Cantthinkofanewusernameffsyes! Neapolitan flavour! Oh my…

I used to hate the chocolate flavour. Chocolate ice cream was pale brown and chocolate flavoured as opposed to chocolate iyswim

Silverbirchleaf · 25/06/2026 20:01

@tobee The last programme was always a short cartoon.

Do you remember when there were only 2 television channels ?

No… must be before my time 😁 BBC1, BBC2 and ITV are my memories and I remember how exciting it was when channel 4 came on air!

Do you remember going on a school trip (Three Counties Show in Malvern in my case!) and taking a Tupperware beaker full of orange squash with you: it had a lid that you just popped on, so if it hadn’t spilled all over your packed lunch by the time you got there, it was warm and tasted of plastic?

I can still smell and taste it now!

I remember that taste. Particularly horrible to have warm orange squash mixed with sand at the seaside!

Do you remember when you answered your phone by saying your phone number, like village ###?

Yes! And I still remember it now.

Specialneedsnightmare · 25/06/2026 20:06

Do you remember when we could go into Blockbusters to rent a movie?

Tarkan · 25/06/2026 20:09

Do you remember when a TV screen would feel fuzzy and staticky if you touched it? Especially when it was just turning on or off.

Do you remember watching snooker on a black and white TV and knowing which ball was which by the shade of grey? (Also that a black and white TV licence was much cheaper so we still had one through most of the 80s).

Do you remember being able to buy cigarettes (or Hamlet cigars in my case) for a parent who smoked? Either through the shop owner knowing you well or a parent writing a note to take in.

Do you remember going into Woolworths on a Saturday to buy the latest single record. Also, those awful Top Of The Pops LPs which had the latest hit singles but not sung by the actual artists!

BiggyJ · 25/06/2026 20:10

Were those horrible "fruit" juices called Tip Top or something like that?
It came with a really thin red straw stuck to the side of a really flimsy plastic cup?

Remember phoning Dial a Disc to listen to a chart song over the phone?

I used to phone for what's on in London today.
A kind of recorded tourist information.
I never went anywhere but it kind of made me feel connected to the great metropolis

There’s a genius episode of South Park where Randy buys an old Blockbuster which is haunted by people asking for 1980s and 1990s films 😂

My friend dug one of those out about 6 months ago! I’d totally forgotten about them 🤣🤣🤣

And if Woolworths didn’t have the single you wanted, Boots might have it in their record department.

Those LPs were shocking 😂

You can still get tiptop

Do you remember the mercury thermometer in its little bakelite screw-top case, produced from a secret location if you claimed to be too ill to go to school and put into your mouth or your armpit depending on what your mother had learned from her own mother? "Ninety-eight-point-four, awa' ye go, yer just havin' me on."

And poking the bubble of mercury around with your fingers when the thermometer broke.

They were shocking, but we still bought them as they were cheap!

Do you remember Blockbusters - the quiz show?
"Can I have a P(ee) please Bob?" never failed to elicit muffled sniggering from me and my sister 😆

Just. I remembered my parents upgrading from two channels to three, back when most households rented their TV.

My nan used to send me for a packet of 5 Woodbine. I was probably about 6 or 7.

Do you remember being poised over your cassette player, with a blank tape inside, ready to record your favourite song when it came on the radio? And the absolute fury towards the DJ if their intro interrupted the beginning of the song?

Hanging out with friends after school and having to be home when the street lights came on.

Savethephoto · 25/06/2026 20:18

Do you remember the excitement when the ice cream van came. If mum was in a good mood we had one as a real treat.

Lol, yes, I loved that show! It was so eighties. Looks so dated when you watch old clips now.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 25/06/2026 20:20

Not just answering the phone with your number, but also as a child being taught how to do it as a rite of passage and feeling so grown up ‘745, 9229’ , or my mum would just abbreviate to the 9229 bit. I remember we got a new car, it was a c reg blue Volvo and we had the choice of plate numbers and they chose C922 —- to match our phone number!

I remember having to make my kit for brownies and it was an old tobacco tin, you had a plaster and a needle and thread and a 10p and things in there.

I remember my grandmother being so excited to try a new drink called one cal (I guess it was the start of artificial sweeteners) and muller corner yoghurts when they first came out. She loved the change and modernisation of the world. I often wonder what she’d make of it all now.
