The first referendum to join the EU was a resounding yes to join.

Er, it wasn't.

We had already joined. The 1975 referendum was on whether we should remain.

Yes. We joined without a referendum. Weird.

If you wanted another referendum then 1993 would have been the inflection point. When the EEC became the EC.

Anyway, our electoral system hasn't evolved to manage referenda. They exist only to allow weak party leaders to avoid jeopardy. (Which is part of their job).

Yes you are right about the continue to stay within the EC however it was a resounding yes!

So one resounding yes to remain and a very dubious no to leave.

Best of three.

I do wonder of Lowe is getting rather perturbed by the type of folk who claim to supoort him.
I would be, too

They're a bit embarrassing when you're trying to position yourself as a serious politician, rather than a rabble rousing thug.

Lowe might even be cringing at some of them, too.

dapsnotplimsolls · 28/06/2026 18:13

I bet Our Tommeh isn't happy with Lowe.

The two can't be compared. Apples and oranges etc.

One was a proper referendum which delivered a decided mandate.

The other was a bargain bin kit, put together not with, but by tools and intended to save David Cameron rather than deliver a mandate. Ultimately it did neither and created one of the bitterest schisms in British political life for generations.

He's just struggling in the same way Farage struggled to hold his earlier incarnations together.
Far right unsurprisingly includes a number of people with deeply unpleasant views and frenetic social media. Handy for getting attention when you are starting out but immediately puts off a lot of voters that you actually need to persuade. Lowe cant expand without ditching the very people propping him up.

So weird. Its a business decision driven by getting people through the doors. Nobody could seriously suggest that the owners of Chatsworth or similar are tofu eating, podcast listening wokesters.

It's proof that if you scratch these neoliberal freemarketeers, you will find a communist underneath. People who are very concerned to tell private businesses how they should run.

Same with Donald "I am ordering the oil companies to lower prices" interfering in the US "free market".

I mean how on earth are Reform going to enforce their evil social agenda without first regulating businesses to the hilt ?

E2A: Also, a lot of hard working families are in the UC scheme. Not really sure trying to demonise them is a great idea.

You lie down with dogs you get fleas, wondering how Lowe will be able to shut the floodgates without alienating the donors or maybe he is rich enough not to care possibly.

I doubt there is the aggregate level of intelligence to encompass the paradox.

This is a nice article. I had a similarly inspirational English teacher in 6th Form. Bloody comprehensives, giving bloody aspirations to bloody plebs. Tchuh.

Stephen Harrington is an older man, aged 83. He has white hair and wears thin-rimmed clear-lensed glasses. He is sitting on a brown leather chair and wears a white and brown checked shirt. He is smiling.

How Andy Burnham's school teacher inspired him to believe in himself

Steve Harrington says he had to convince the front-runner for Labour leader into going to Cambridge University.

Tommy is I think doing quite well for himself. He just has sniff a costly lifestyle.
Maybe with Lowe being exposed as secretly a lefty all along he can expect to be signal boosted by people like Musk if they abandon Lowe. And even secure more dosh.
Unfortunately though, I think that Lowe is doing that strategic thing of saying a few non racist things to gain "respectability" and plausible deniability so his supporters can argue "he's not far right that's just a smear. Being against uncontrolled immigration/abuse of girls isn't racist. See how far the Overton window has shifted etc". And he's hoping to do that whilst also saying other stuff to show his old school supporters he still agrees with them. And hope noone puts the two contradictory statements together and sees they don't match.

DuncinToffee · 28/06/2026 19:46

If you want a laugh , Kwasi Kwarteng is saying that chancellor 'Red Ed' will be a disaster for Britain

🥬

DuncinToffee · 28/06/2026 19:53

And the DM's massive scandal involving Bridget Phillipson is that her mum bought a council house for £9k in 1990 and then sold it 33 years later for £99k.
Hmm

Efacsen · 28/06/2026 19:55

IDK which is more shocking @DuncinToffee !!!

BIossomtoes · 28/06/2026 20:02

I’m appalled, such wickedness! Kwarteng gets the award for staggering lack of self awareness.

My understanding is that Tommeh's funding is very opaque and 'shady' - and when he needs it there's plenty of money made available to him - have read at least a couple of long articles about it and was no wiser having read them - there is a bit of an anti-semitic tone to some of the commentary

He's also not averse to the occ GoFundMe for his legal fees
