I work for a wage, but I don't work hard and don't have a family to support. Do I count?

You do as far as I'm concerned, but I wasn't the one whose category of worker is so very narrow!

pointythings · 25/06/2026 21:46

DS had a storm in Plymouth, but it looks as if it's all passing us by.

DuncinToffee · 25/06/2026 22:03

I saw that earlier, Times was reporting that Mahmood was going ro sack Tapp.

PickAChew · 25/06/2026 22:41

Surely that's all up in the air, anyway, once Andy the new PM is in charge.

Sitting out in the garden enjoying the cool breeze with DH who got back from his trip into the red zone in time to acknowledge our anniversary. Was 30C upstairs an hour ago. I'm banking the chill.

A surprisingly fast hedgehog just raced across the garden. Confirmation that our choggy house still has a tenant ❤️

Happy anniversary

We just came inside to escape the insects. Still 26c outside.

Thank you. Just crept below 20 here. DH has decided that despite being a pasty northern Ginger he likes hot. Weirdo.

He's gone to bed, now. I slept remarkably well without the snoring so don't need another early night, despite the just gone 5am start.

Lots of weird moths, as always. Found this one on the garage door, this morning. Not usually sighted north of Cheshire though I found a map that has them logged in fairly low numbers along the NE coast so it's not that out of place. They like beech and several neighbours have copper beech.

We put a pond in the garden about 6 weeks ago. It went from crystal clear to very murky on the weekend and the oxygenating plants all seemed to die leaving the waterlillies and floating plants we got.

Dh got more oxygenating plants, I bought some kind of pond feeder (no chemicals), and not only has the water started to clear, but we seem to have mosquito larvae. The start of the ecosystem working i hope.

Who would have thought mosquito larvae could make a person so happy. Grin

Ooh. Rumble of thunder here!

PickAChew · 26/06/2026 07:18

Woken up to a very rumbly alarm. It's not even raining yet and the noise is constant. Dozens of strikes on the map just to the west of us. Some of you must have had a humdinger.

That's an enormous storm that you are on the edge of - it passed us by last night when it was much further south

@TemperanceWest did your rumble develop into anything?

MsJinks · 26/06/2026 08:07

Awoken by a massive bomb - fortunately it was thunder - quite violent storm but passed over very quickly - not sure it’s actually cooled anything down so another day of looking like a red, sweaty tomato then.

Been sleeping sans clothes in the front room with a fan on - I’m in a third, also top, floor flat and the mezzanine is unbearable - browsing the many posts here to catch up on and oblivious to surroundings in my non overlooked flat when I realised a cherry picker has been past my window and onto the roof with the skylights - now I need to leave town 🙈

pointythings · 26/06/2026 08:11

No storms here, it's boiling again and the gas pipe upgrade folks are drilling and hammering. They aim to be done by 11 though.

BestIsWest · 26/06/2026 08:22

Disappointingly we had a few flashes of lightning and distant thunder and nothing else. No rain. We must have been on the edge of it.

Ds2 is sleeping on the third floor, I don't envy you, it's rather stifling up there.

Edit-spelling

DuncinToffee · 26/06/2026 08:31

Another hot day in the red zone.

placemats · 26/06/2026 08:38

It absolutely chucked it down sometime during the night. Woke up at the crack of dawn and peered out of the window to see the dog walkers. Somehow got 7 hours sleep. Temperature is currently 25C in the shade.

@MsJinks I feel for you 😎🤭

It was a small but very intense one that passed us. The Northern tip if the big one is now on its way over. We're not on the main front but still got plenty of rain and noise and flickery lights.

DH asked where the epicentre was. I might send him back down to Coventry 🙄

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 26/06/2026 08:51

Nothing stormy here (near Heathrow) last night. Hot here already this morning.

Efacsen · 26/06/2026 08:59

It's only 24 degrees here - but 29 in the house after having all the windows open overnight - yesterday it was 32 degrees so it has gone down a bit Grin

The house is SE facing so once the sun moves over I can open the windows again and let the breeze again

No, so disappointing 😢. It is supposed to be cooler here in South Wales today, so why is it 28 degrees in my living room already 😡. @BestIsWest and @cardibach how is it where you are?

TemperanceWest · 26/06/2026 09:18

France is having a terrible time of it. In Paris there were four times the usual number of cardiac arrests.

Tim Stanley has upset Telegraph readers by being mean about the ARC conference. Some of the reader comments are funny.
