My mood has dropped spectacularly, my cup is empty. I am tearful, irritable. I would love to watch something that is light, funny, uplifting, anything really. Say I am drawn to misery and doom which doesnt help I dont think.

Please suggest something.

Rye Lane on BBC IPlayer, and you will thank me forever!

I think it’s the most perfect romantic comedy, and a real joy.
(Look out for the Colin Firth cameo)

I just watched this yesterday - and wholeheartedly agree @Abustedflush . It's funny, smart, and visually great with a brilliant soundtrack.

The Story of Anvil , a documentary about a heavy metal band who had a brief heyday in the early 80s, but are still going. The doc was from 2006 or something like that.

You don't need to like metal! I don't.

When I'm feeling low I go for classic comedy series. Father Ted has to be one of the most happiness inducing things you could watch. Or the original Alan Partridge series, Blackadder, Black Books....if you want something particularly silly I still love Gimme, gimme, gimme (with the amazing James Dreyfus).

These also have the advantage of episodes only lasting half an hour so not much concentration span required!

Thank you to those who recommended Fisk.......I'm now on episode 4 and love it! 😅

Abouteffingtime · 03/07/2026 08:33

Also started Fisk last night!

Four Seasons on Netflix.
A friend watches an episode of Downton every evening in winter! I watch The Crown in an emergency.
Some brilliant suggestions on this thread...Benidorm is peak fabulous.

hellswelshy · 03/07/2026 09:32

I second Four Seasons, there's two series of that now. Also as previously mentioned - Schitts Creek, Modern Family, The Middle, Frasier, Detectorists, Ghosts. Thanks for some of these suggestions & hope you feel brighter soon op 💐

If you are doom inclined but want something funny then watch What We Do In The Shadows, it’s utterly excellent

Shabang21 · 03/07/2026 11:41

Little Miss Sunshine is pure joy! I hope you feel better x

ToadRage · 03/07/2026 11:47

Any Disney classic gives me the warm fuzzies. My go-to is The Little Mermaid but everyone has their own favourite.

Oh Fisk is a joy, glad you have had that suggestion!

There is or was a lovely Japanese show on Netflix called ‘Old Enough’ - tiny children going out to do an errand for their parents, sometimes with a sibling or friend, very heavily supervised but in a way that they’re not aware of 🤣

Old Enough!

It is adorable and heart warming in all the right ways, I promise!

Christmas movies are the best thing about Christmas . Romance in the snow in New England. Happy Days.

Oh yes we love them as well. Lacey Chabert solving a very mild local dilemma and finding romance on the way is the best thing ever at Christmas.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 03/07/2026 15:14

Lots of these. Id also recommend Trying on bbc. Lovely Ralph Spall. A couple want to adopt and go through hoops to do so. I know it sounds dreadful, but dh put me on to it(he's such a softy) and its lovely. Great cast of characters. Just genuinely lovely.

The Other Bennet Sister.
It's healing.

Agree! I found that I kept smiling as I watched.

Edited

A Castle for Christmas. I watch it every year. We also have to watch Scrooge and Bernard and the Genie on Christmas day, its tradition.

Irish Wish is of the so bad it's good genre. Good is perhaps too strong a word...

Small Prophets
Detectorists
Ghosts
The Durrells

Watch, all series of, those four and you’ll never be sad again. Guaranteed.
